Reasons are rational while excuses aren’t.

“I can’t come to work because I’m sick” rational

“I can’t come to work because I don’t feel like it but I’ll say something like my car won’t start or I have explosive diarrhea” excuse.

Ok but one of those is a truth and the other is a lie, so that's not really what's going on here. In that case, the accusation wouldn't be "that's an excuse", the accusation should be "that's a lie".

We're talking about situations where the person gives an entirely truthful explanation of what happened, but is accused of making excuses by the person in power.

An "excuse" allegedly means you're expecting to not receive punishment, while a "reason" allegedly just explains what you did...

The problem is, labeling your explanation as a "reason" or an "excuse" is entirely in the hands of the person with power: the parent or teacher or boss etc, so truth vs lies and objectivity has very little to do with it.

The person in power is mad; therefore, no matter what you say, they will call your explanation an "excuse", claim you are trying to get out of being punished, and make the punishment worse, because they are angry.

Basically, the whole thing is unfair and is meant to be unfair because the person asking the question doesn't actually give two shits why the problem occurred.

I’ve always taken it as:

If you’re late because there was an unexpected traffic jam but you left during your usual time then it’s a reason.

If you’re late because there was a traffic jam, but you know that there’s a possibility of it happening yet still didn’t account for it then it’s it’s an excuse.

That’s my personal barometer at least.

I can't keep up with the discord fandom either ;-; I love chatting about Hangst and fic and everything, but I much more prefer one on one fandom chats than the open chat environment of discord, it's overwhelming to me tbh

It can be definitely! When I had more time to chat on discord I’d usually focus on one channel and move around more when I know people and don’t feel so lost in the conversation.

One on one chat to me is nice too but I get shy when I can’t reply to people right away lol

It was a pretty normal roommate situation, until Jake accidentally pops off the thing covering the vent that connected their bedrooms and suddenly Bradley knew in surround-sound clarity what it was that Jake did for a living.
