Some asshole on my AO3 page once whined that I wasn’t even a “real fan” of Devil May Cry series & that I just played the reboot (I didn’t) & latched onto 5 for no reason.

On its 4th anniversary, I want to write about how Resident Evil 7 was far better than Devil May Cry 5 was— how Ethan was much braver than Dante & Nero (& especially V) were in his quest to find and rescue Mia from an incredibly dangerous situation starting out with nothing more than a mere pocket knife (after getting a hand sawed off then stapled back on, oh my God), that Eveline was a much better villain than Vergil was because SHE is a literal 3-years-old fungi biohazard in the form of a little girl homunculus who gets extremely hostile & creepy very fast while on transport with Mia and her second handler, then possesses the Baker parents. Lucas was also an interesting villain although a really annoying one, a selfish prick who didn’t care about his family (much like Vergil). Of course, the greatest scope villain was the corporation that made Eveline, which if you really think about it, she is such a frightening bioweapon. At least in RE7, you actually feel challenged fighting Jack and the Molded or avoiding Marguerite, & there are some interesting puzzles to solve. In DMC, there used to be some puzzles, no more. In DMC5, you play as some profoundly overpowered jerk who does not know struggle except during the boss fights. And the characters. Like, the Baker family had a lot of personality, even though most of it was played for creepy comedy. And you’ll definitely feel sympathy for Zoey & Joe. You want them both to live. Ethan was definitely “the straight man” type, but he still should’ve had more characterization to him. ...I didn’t feel sympathy or any positive feelings for any of the DMC5 characters. I was just like “Is this shit over yet?” The only mildly good part of that game was Nico the engineer. Dante & Nero are both jerks, V is a sleazy liar, while Vergil is some entitled insecure asshole with a stupid sword. There’s nothing interesting or compelling about his character. And Vergil was even worse than Wesker was, murdering a large city full of people for their blood. Eveline was operating on her programmed instincts to desire a family, twisted as the means are. Even Lucas Baker, asshole that he was, angrily called out the people who made Eveline like that in an email document you can find (I think it’s in the base game or the Not A Hero epilogue DLC).
This rat bastard seriously would.

People who honestly think that Devil May Cry 5 has a good story & characters should be taken to a black site & be forced to play some of the worst video games ever, like Custer’s Revenge, Sonic ‘06, Bubsy 3D— & watch some of the worst movies ever made, like CATS (2019), Freddy Got Fingered, Manos: The Hands of Fate (no MST3K version), Reefer Madness, Howard the Duck, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Showgirls, Batman & Robin, and The Last Airbender.
