Why is this goofball allowed to be our prime minister?

On April 12th, 2026, Israel killed Mohamad Hassan Haidar in a drone strike in Southern Lebanon. To say the least, the response from the Canadian government has been wholly insufficient.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is willing to extend nominal sympathy to Haidar's family, but will not condemn the state of Israel for his death. She calls for Israeli strikes on Lebanon to cease (only after tacitly affirming that Hezbollah is a legitimate target and separable from the government of Lebanon), but does not support any course of action that could deter Israeli aggression in the region.

The reporting on this subject is sparse, but attacks on the same day in the same region are reported to have killed at least five other people. Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, killing at least 72,000, and now killed at least 2,100 more people in Lebanon.

Yet Canadian arms are still being exported to Israel and our government won't even draw the line at its own citizens being killed.

It's a miracle that garlic isn't bad for you. Things that delicious aren't usually allowed to be healthy.

it's another cooking post because I'm hyperfixating on soup.

I think people who complain about cooking being too hard are just making batches of food that are too small. Cooking one night's meal every day is psychotic.

The entire process, buying groceries, cooking, cleaning up, becomes less of a time sink when you're cooking several days' worth of food at a time.

Even if you're less autistic than me and don't want to eat the same thing for lunch and dinner 3 days in a row, it's so easy to store food.

- You can leave it in the fridge if you're going to eat it in the next two days.

- Or put it in the freezer immediately, then thaw in the fridge for 2 days and reheat.

Just make more food to intersperse with what you've already got.

Canadians, if you have a few free minutes and want to do something good, please consider emailing the prime minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Anand, and your own MP to urge them to send a Canadian naval ship to protect the Global Sumud Flotilla from Israeli attacks.

Yes, definitely do this. Also consider emailing your premier — local leaders are more responsive to individual constituents because they have fewer of them, and they also have the power to pressure the federal government.

Did you know that Japan kidnapped many Korean nationals and vivisected them (Look up Unit 731). And the information from Unit 731 was used to kill millions more of Koreans.

Imperial Japanese Biological Warfare & Human Experimentation

To answer your question: yes, though the victims were largely Chinese. The facility was located in the Pingfang district of Harbin, now part of Northeast China:

The Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department was an arm of the Imperial Japanese army from 1936 – 1945, and its public mission was to prevent the spread of disease and monitor water supply. Its Manchu Detachment 731 also performed human experiments, in which at least 10,000 to 12,000 prisoners of war and civilians were tortured to death over the course of years.

Unit 731 veterans confessed to taking part in vivisections of live victims, cultivating anthrax, typhoid, cholera and other viruses, and dropping plague-infected fleas over villages. Some estimates put the biological warfare death toll at as high as 300,000.

Shirō Ishii (石井 四郎) was a microbiologist and army medical officer who served as the director of Unit 731. Twelve Unit 731 members were tried by the Soviet Union in the 1949 Khabarovsk war crimes trials, but he and many key figures were granted immunity by the United States in exchange for their research data.

It wasn't until August 28th, 2002, that the Tokyo District Court formally acknowledged that Japan had conducted biological warfare in China and held the state responsible for any of the killings.

My Second Attempt at Soup

I have finished a big bowl of version 2 and I have ideas. It was awesome, but it would be awesomer with some potato chunks and if I let the celery simmer longer.

I'm aiming for that dissolving-into-the-broth, melt-in-your-mouth texture and I got a lot closer this time by peeling the spines and pan frying them for a little bit before tossing them into the soup.

I did also cheat with some store bought broth. I do want to be able to make my own, but I need another vegetable-heavy recipe in rotation so I can use the scraps.

^^ This was attempt 1. It was nice, but pretty bland. I made the broth with vegetable discards from my beans and rice and it was peppery.

North Korean Kidnappins of Japanese Citizens

Megumi Yokota (横田 めぐみ) was a thirteen year old Japanese citizen who was abducted right off the beach by a North Korean agent in 1977. She was never seen alive again, and the remains eventually sent back to Japan were never verified to be hers.

On September 17, 2002, Kim Jong-Il admitted that N.Korea has been abducting ordinary Japanese citizens at the Summit Conference held in Pyongyang N.Korea. At least sixteen other Japanese citizens shared Megumi's fate, and possibly hundreds.

The people who had disappeared were average Japanese people who were opportunistically abducted.

On Wednesday 15th, 2002, after intense international pressure, North Korea allowed five victims — the only known survivors — to "visit" Japan after two decades in captivity. The Japanese government allowed the returnees to stay permanently.

The returnees described living under close surveillance and being forced to teach the Japanese language and culture to spy trainees for operations in Japan and South Korea.

In this piece, I wanted to recreate the feeling of a childhood nightmare. I dropped the lineart that's so frequently part of my art style, and I leaned into more realistic textures to contrast the figure behind the window.

In April, I attended a Mark Carney rally.

The Prime Minister of Canada was campaigning in my province, in British Columbia.

I joined the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) to influence the leadership race after Justin Trudeau's resignation and also gained access to this event.

A speaker would typically stand facing the crowd, but the podium pictured on the right faced the camera instead. The crowd was positioned to ensure as many supporters as possible appeared in the shot.

It makes intuitive sense now, but I hadn't before realized how carefully events like these were staged.

^^ This is me, by the way. I wouldn't have known where to look had it not been for the gentleman in the burgandy turban, because apparently CPAC TV only records in 720p.

During Mark Carney's speech, several attendees shouted at him for ignoring Israel's genocide in Gaza and Canada's complicity in it, after the governing LPC misled voters about halting arms sales to Israel.

Carney's callous indifference to the hecklers unsettled me. Amid these disruptions, I had a brief exchange with a fellow attendee:

A woman shouted, "Stop the genocide!" and was dragged away.

A man who didn't hear her leaned in to ask me, "What did she say?"

I repeated her words back to him and he asked, "What genocide?"

I said, "The genocide in Gaza." Definitively calling it genocide was (and somehow still is) controversial in Canadian politics, so I expected him to push back in some way.

Instead he said, "Oh," like he hadn't thought about it before. Then he said "That's a good idea."

I realize that I spoke to one man at one rally, but I thought his reaction was telling. He clearly wasn't engaged with or informed about foreign policy issues, but his immediate reaction to genocide was that stopping it was the natural, obvious thing to do.

This was not the first time Mark Carney was heckled about the Gaza issue and it would not be the last, but his position of tacit support for Israel remained unwavering. Yet I spoke to one of his supporters, someone who didn't even care about foreign policy, and a gentle nudge is all it took to get him on board with opposing genocide.

I harp on about the Gaza issue because it's a very basic moral litmus test that most politicians fail. As public opinion turns against Israel, it's also increasingly a measure of democratic responsiveness.

Despite growing public recognition, Canada's political elites and media avoid calling Israel's actions genocide. I will continue to demand better from my representatives.
