We have officially hit peak Reigal bit, where Sam has actively forgotten he’s supposed to be making an add
don’t let professional voice actors play D&D because they will have the ability to destroy you with just one word and in this case that word is “why”
A thing that's wrecking me about C2E69
Because there’s so many things that stand out. Like the NottxJester convo for example. PLZ love and have patience with mah bb goblin PLZ. Or Yasha saying ‘Please let me be first.’ She wants to face this head on and that WRECKS ME!! OR FJORD ALMOST GOING DOWN, LIKE LEGIT!! Or like Beauregard being BOSS AND THE DICE WORKING right when she needs them to.
But there’s also… something a little quieter in the background that happens this episode. That I think I only really got bc I was watching a clip of Ep45 to reference something else. And that would be the change in Caleb’s battle tactics ever since he’s gotten Polymorph.
He’s a field controller and buffer with his spell use, primarily. Either bc Caleb wants to be effective, or Liam wants to make sure he’s not wasting spells. The spells he’s most frequently used in the past were ones to buff his allies, or debuff enemies, or to affect terrain/field of battle with environmental spells. And he’s typically only reverted to damage spells as a last resort, or when he’s really emotional.
The use of Polymorph changes his tactics soooo much. And ever since the dragon battle of ep45 and his resulting breakdown over it, he’s changed how he fights. He stayed behind, near the lava river, even thought Nott was invisible, utilizing Polymorph to make sure Beau could get Nott out safely in C2E50. He did both to try to catch the giants’ attention, and because he wasn’t leaving without Nott. Ep60’s title for heavensake, is 'A turtle by any other name’ in reference to the Polymorph shenaniganry. Ep65&66 have him utilizing the Giant Eagle form bc of the chase sequences, and needing to catch the rest if they fell. Again, most recently in this dungeon, he uses the Giant Spider and the Giant Eagle forms, to protect both himself, and the rest. He couldn’t keep a distance from the battle, was in an area where big damage spells were only so effective, and so he used the forms to probably buff his own health to stay up and not waste cleric spells, and to also get in other creatures’ faces as a distraction.
And now here, in e69, he Polymorphs to Giant Ape. And states out loud that he isn’t leaving behind Jester or Nott, and goes straight for the Laughing Hand. It’s been 24 episodes since the dragon battle in the Happy Fun Ball. It’s been even longer than that, since Caleb has started making big plays to get the others to safety. Everyone often uses clutch moves to do that in combat, don’t get me wrong. But it’s pretty telling that there were tons of posts leading up to e69 about what cliffhanger Caleb would leave us on for our hiatus. But damn did it break my heart a little bit when Ape!Caleb just screamed at the Laughing Hand to distract it from Jester and Caduceus. His tactics have changed so. much. and I’m not gonna get over that any time soon.
I have so many feelings about each member of the party and how they’re handling this oh my god
Jester: the last one to hope that they might, somehow, bring Yasha along. Reminds me of her “where’s Molly?” She doesn’t want it to be true. It can’t be true. “We talked to her in her quietest moments.”
Fjord: terrified of going to jail, of being trapped just like he has been with Uk’otoa. And also of not being the right person at the right time, the convenient solution to a problem. “Problems get locked away.” He blames himself, just like for Molly’s death: “we were played the whole time. How stupid are we?”
Nott: quickly giving the flower to Yasha — their first point of contact, so long ago. Her strained “what about Yasha?” when they’re thinking of cutting the bridge. She’s surprisingly stable, insisting that they take things one step at a time. She reverts to protector.
Caleb: the bitter way he says “politics — things we don’t understand.” “A bunch of fast-talkers and where did that get us?” He tried to play the long game, he tried to have ambitions like he did in his youth, but are they all falling apart again?
Beau: “it feels closer though. I don’t know why.” Ages ago, it seems, she told Caduceus that she feels weirdly calmer when everything’s going to shit, and it comes out again. For everyone’s talk of needing to put one foot in front of the other, she’s the one who can understand, amid all the emotional turmoil, where exactly their next destination might be.
Caduceus: another comforter, but more rattled than he might want. “No one’s stupid… any one of us could have turned in there and we would all be saying I told you so.” But is he comforting himself? He believes in destiny — does he really believe it could have happened any other way?
And oh, Yasha…
i'm not sure which is funnier: the classic "fjord keeps summoning one poor, beleaguered balgura and at this point it practically counts as his familiar" or "it's a different, unsuspecting balgura each time, and fjord is slowly depleting the balgura population of the abyssal plane"
