So I'm gonna preface this by saying that I have not seen Nolan's The Odyssey. I have no idea how well he personally handled this adaptation. I have read the Odyssey a couple times, as I think most of us here have, but I do not claim to be an expert. However, I do feel this increasingly strongly:

I really don't think cutting the "Nobody" scene from a film adaptation is the end of the world.

Two reasons.

A LOT happens in the Odyssey. The frank truth of it is, if you want to try to fit this story into a single movie of reasonable length, you HAVE to make cuts. Epic: The Musical can make nine full albums diligently adapting everything because Epic: The Musical is not being played in its entirety to a theatrical audience (disclaimer: I have also not listened to the entirety of Epic: The Musical). Personally, I wouldn't ever want to make an Odyssey movie specifically for this reason, but if you're gonna take on that monumental task you're gonna have to make some choices. And let's be honest with ourselves, Tumblr, if Nolan cut, say, Scylla and Charybdis, people would also be angry about it. The nature of the thing is that you've just gotta kind of accept that adaptation literally means to make changes. Skepticism is fine, that's human, but getting mad about the fact that something is changed before you have any idea how or in service to what is unhelpful and frankly probably unhealthy. I feel like we've kinda collectively lost sight of this because it's so iconic, but the Nobody gambit just...doesn't really work in English. It doesn't make Odysseus sound clever, it makes Polyphemus sound like an idiot for hearing a man declare his name is "Nobody" (a name, ironically, that nobody has ever had. It doesn't even sound like it could be a name) and accepting that entirely at face value. It's ok in the original epic because you pick it up with the knowledge that this is a translated work. There's a certain amount of grace given, there might even be a teacher or translator notes to help smooth it over more. A movie doesn't get that grace. A movie is a translation of a translation that you experience in real time without the ability to stop and figure it out and go back. For the Nobody gambit to work without the presupposition that the audience already knows how this goes, you'd already have to alter it significantly. How much time do you have to accommodate that? Is it possible you could fit the same themes from the Nobody gambit elsewhere in the movie more easily? I don't know, but those would certainly be questions I would ask myself, and I do fully believe a clever screenwriter could figure it out.

Like I said, I haven't seen the Nolan movie. I don't know if he pulled it off. I've heard that they have cyclops puppets so it sounds like at least some version of the rest of the confrontation is in the movie, which frankly sounds encouraging to me. I really don't think cutting a single piece of Ancient Greek wordplay in an English language adaptation is killing the sacred deer, as it were. Its a three hour film. If the movie is bad or Odysseus feels off by the end it will be the culmination of hundreds upon thousands of choices. It is not going to be solely because of this.
