“That’s a very diplomatic answer, one that will make you win at everything,” Sutton pointed out with a soft laugh, “You’re doing good for others, don’t think less of that, because there are a lot of people who are doing bad things but they think they’re doing good instead,” Sutton said, afterall she had seen those people before. “Well then I’m sure there’s plenty of scenery here that you can see.”

    “Nothing diplomatic about it, just speaking from the heart.” He answered back at her, honesty coating his every syllable. Evan’s expression contorted into a confused one. “What exactly do I win though?” At her added words the male pushed his hair back. “’M not demeaning it, just being humble I guess. When one starts to get cocky, bad stuff tend to happen.” Even if scenery wasn’t the true reason he came to Denver for, he still curiously asked. “Got any good places to recommend?”

As the men got settled in the bar and gave them their drinks soon enough, Kaleb felt that coming to Denver was a good thing over all. Seeing that he had Evan, and even Accalia here was all he could ask for. With his arms crossed over and leaning against the bar counter he listened to Evan speak which really took him by surprise as he turned to give him all the attention needed. “She what? Evan, I’m so sorry.” he said bringing a hand to Evan’s shoulder. “When did this happen?” 

    Evan nestled his glass in between his palms enjoying the coldness it brought on his skin. He knew his statement was going to throw his friend off and that he originally was going to leave the heavy stuff for another night, but the words tumbled out before he could grasp them back. The male looked at his companion for a few seconds before averting his eyes. “It’s okay, it ain’t your fault, you didn’t pull the trigger. About freshman year of college I think.”

“I think you would like it.” Zara told him after taking another gulp of whiskey. “It was actually the castle. I can’t remember the specifics but it was occupied by Vlad the Impaler. Who was part of the House of Drăculești. But he was known for being cruel ad he was the inspiration for Bram’s Dracula.” Zara rattled off. “That was a lot of things I don’t get. And it wasn’t just pot, doc.”

    Evan listened with interest, Mia too had a love for literature, poetry especially. She used to leave him sticky notes with verses around his apartment. The world did not do her justice. “Would have never guessed that would be the reason, how curious.” He gave a small chuckle of embarrassment. “Sorry, I tend to babble about medical topics without comprehending that for others- is just boring.”

“Yes, I’m sleeping a lot. Some might say too much but since I don’t have anything else to do, trust me, I’ve been sleeping.” Zachary was pretty sure he was sleeping much more now than he had ever in his life and that probably included from when he was a baby. “Uhm– sometimes I forget things people tell me pretty fast,” he admitted. “You know, like my short term memory hasn’t caught up or something.” He ran a hand through his hair quickly moving it as he found the stitches there again and opted to cross his arms instead. “Headaches come and go.”

    “Well in your case, I’ll say excessive sleep is good.” Evan responded back. His right hand fidgeted lightly at the feeling of having to write down everything, but he wanted to stay casual. His gaze narrowed slightly at his next words, his other hand lifting to lightly scratch his beard. “Hmm. Headaches is common, but not the short term memory loss.” The doctor pursed his lips not wanting to make mountains out of molehills. “But for now we can chalk it up as a side-effect, if it persists we’re going to have to run over some tests, Mr. Wynne.”

Rae jumped some when she heard someone knocking on the door. She sighed and wiped her cheeks off, utterly embarrassed with the state she was in. She usually wasn’t bad about getting attached to her patients, she was usually good at distancing herself a healthy amount to care yet protect herself if something were to go wrong. She didn’t have a bad reputation for bonding too much with patients, she had quite a good reputation, she was a pediatric surgeon that parents would drive from hours away to make sure their child got the best, and she was, and she knew that, so she could give off a bit of a god complex at times. 

“Yeah.. Yeah, come in.” She said after she had wiped her cheeks off, though her eyes were puffy and it was clear she’d been crying - Not that he didn’t already know she was upset. But Rachel didn’t want to be seen like that. She was a damn strong woman, and that’s what she wanted everyone else to see from her. 

    Upon hearing confirmation, Evan entered the small closet hesitantly. He was never good at consoling people that weren’t his patients, once he was off duty he became almost robotic. As the male saw she was crying he felt a small part of himself shrivel up in fear, he had never been good at handling crying women. “Thank you.” The male answered briefly before taking a seat opposite of her, leaning against the wall to support his back. He waited a couple of moments for her to gather herself up before speaking his mind on the matter. 

    “It wasn’t your fault.” He started saying to her. “And I’m not just saying that to make you feel better. I saw the file and there was nothing you could have done differently because you couldn’t have known.” Evan spoke in earnest, he was always truthful to his residents because he felt honesty would make them better doctors in the end. “We can’t save everybody unfortunately.”

Their childhood was fun and wild, though for the most part people thought they were crazy because of that close bond they had. When they weren’t with each other, it seemed the two man were different people. “What?” Kaleb looked confused at Evan as he corrected to the you being him that would get kicked out. “Me.. kicked out? Nah. Once only because that was our first time with fake ids and I panicked!” Defending himself as they entered the bar and sat down on the stools. “I’ll take Red Stag” 

    Evan recalled the time Kaleb had spoken of and grinned fondly. Such good times those were, they all seemed like a past life now. “At least we had fun.” The male answered back wistfully, looking back at the bartender to order himself a whiskey. He remained quiet for a while, overwhelmed by his thoughts. Mostly remembering how supportive and how close Kaleb and him had been, once upon a time. “My mom,” Evan started saying knowing he still trusted his friend with his dark past. “She was, um, killed.”

“Feeling irritable, and I like to think being stuck in a wheelchair since my leg is still in a cast means I’m perpetually resting,” said Zachary as he gestured to the chair he’d been given. Although he tried to use crutches. It was turning out to be harder, but he was getting better. He’d get to crutches even if it killed him. “I’m nothing if not honest.” 

    Evan fought off a small smile at the male before him started answering. He did ask for honesty. “Well I can clearly see that now. And by resting, I do mean sleeping. It’s important for your brain to regain its momentum in slow steps. Which brings me to the nest question.” He cleared his throat briefly. “Have you been experiencing any memory loss, abnormal headache, anything unusual?”

Sutton walked next to him and sat on the couch she pointed at, “Oh you are?” she asked with interest, “Please, being in politics is far from exciting, beside you get to save people. So what brings you to Denver?” Sutton asked him.

    Evan gave a bashful shrug at her words. “I just treat people and hopefully it sticks, and manages to save lives.” Her question brought up a blank in his mind. It was hard to explain the reason he moved without going into gory detail. “Um, just wanted a change of scenery, I guess you could say.”

“I’m sure there is babe. People did crazy shit back then and continue to do crazy shit. I watched this Mysteries at the Castle show and they talked about what most likely inspired the Dracula story.” Zara rambled as she held her whiskey. “But personally for me? I was high when I wrote. Only thing that inspired me to be creative. Sure I’m not the only one.”

    “It was the nineteenth century after all. Plus, what’s gothic literature without its creepy backstory.” Evan replied before taking another long sip of his whiskey. “Haven’t heard about the show but it sounds fascinating. So what did inspire the Dracula story?” The male asked in genuine curiosity. He then chuckled at her words. “Well that’s because pot has about sixty types of cannabinoids which affect our neurons in a way that magnifies our thoughts and perception, and keeps the brain fixed on them.”

the way bucky was written in the earlier comic books is very different from how we’ve decided to go with in the movies. that was actually kind of nice for me because it allowed me to have a fresh and unique approach to it.

    It was a strange sensation to be living under the same roof as some of his patients, especially for Evan since he was such a stickler for Medical Ethics. But it also helped him in a way, to interact with them in some other environment other than the hospital, which he knew bothered some people. “So, Mr. Wynne,” He started saying with his ‘doctor tone’ as the nurses liked to tease. “how have you been feeling and what have you been up to? Hopefully, resting.” The doctor said with a look before adding. “This is just a mandatory checkup we need to do. And I need you to be honest with me, please, it’ll make my job a whole lot easier and I’ll bother you less.”

Rachel was relentless in her work, as every doctor should be. It was hard but she pushed her limits and often that of her patients as well. Her patients were children, she was a pediatric surgeon and her surgeries had one of the lowest mortality rates in the state of Colorado. She was as skilled with a scalpel as she was devoted. Working with children was wonderful for her too, she smiled and they smiled, the world hadn’t stolen their spark yet and Rae liked to see that - But with the incredible payoff of saving the lives of children came an equal devastation when she couldn’t. 

One of her long time patients, who she had been with since her intern year, had died. They’d been waiting for a heart transplant, and after years of Rachel treating this wonderful ten year old girl, one finally came through. She had done the surgery, and it had been a success. Only, the girl rejected the organ, and even though Rachel opened her up again, stood over her for hours again, and performed CPR well past the point hope was lost - She had died. A ten year old. And she had just left from telling her parents that they’re baby girl died. As she turned her back on the girls parents, Rae couldn’t compose herself much longer, so opening the first closet she found, she covered her face and let it out. She had lost patients before, it wasn’t something new - But this girl was the patient she’d been with for the longest, and even doctors fell victim to the heartbreak that came after false hope for their patients.

    Evan had been in his office looking through file after file, it was a methodical process he took every day and night. It calmed to know he always up to date with each and every single one of his patients, he had to see them every day after all. A knock interrupted his habit and he looked up to see the Resident Director come inside his office. Dr. Davis was an old and respectable man, his wrinkled hands sometimes trembled and his eyes crinkled with laugh lines even when he wasn’t smiling. It reminded him of his own grandfather. Dr. Davis was going to soon retire and even though Evan had not been long in the hospital, he had already told the other male he was going to pass the baton to him. 

    He wondered briefly why the esteemed doctor was coming to him so unexpectedly but then he spoke his reason. It seemed he had seen a fellow surgeon distraught over a lost patient. Evan could sympathize, he had been there countless of times, so with reassuring words the doctor set out to look for her. The male remembered meeting a fellow surgeon who used to detach themselves from patients, after all, they were the ones cutting into the bodies if something were to go wrong it was in their hands, literally. So the connection was always different since attending physicians saw their patients every day, got to know them on a personal level. Evan was walking through the hallways and a knowing nurse pointed him to a closet and he nodded gratefully. Raising his hand he gave three swift knocks. “Hello? Is it alright if I come in?”

As they started walking to the nearest bar, Kaleb had the biggest grin on. He had missed Evan seeing as their friendship was the easiest part of his childhood. “Yea, we are going to the first bar. Lets just hope he don’t get kicked out.” Hearing the new subject, Kaleb’s grin died down lightly as he was turning the wheels in his head to figure out what to say about his siblings. He left Owen and Julianne to escape the past and Greg wasn’t with them at all. Evan didn’t even know what all happened to them. “They are in South Carolina, Owen is a cop, haven’t heard what Julianne and Greg doing. Something creative surely” 

    Evan laughed, actually laughed, the sound bubbling out of his chest in such a strange sound that most people would have suspected he’d never laughed before. They would have been somewhat correct, the last time the male had truly laughed was with Mia, sweet and caring Mia. Parting is such sweet sorrow as Shakespeare would say. “I hope that ‘we’ really means you, ‘cause I’d never gotten kicked out of a bar before.” He answered back lying through his teeth. His teenage years weren’t that innocent. Encountering a bar, Evan opened up the door for Kaleb then followed him inside. “Oh I see, well I wish them the best.” He didn’t push the matter any further. Sitting down at a stool, “What do you want to drink, buddy?”

“No need to worry about me, doc.” Zara laughed, smirking at the male before taking a sip from her own glass. “I will keep that in mind. But I think Dr. Jekyll and Victor Frankenstein are just just works of literary creativity. I would know, I studied creative writing.”

    “You did? That’s quite impressive, I must admit I’ve always admired writers and what they do with a blank page.” Evan answered truthfully looking down at his glass with a faraway look in his eyes. It was easy to fall back into past memories. “But where do you think those writers got their inspiration from, hmm? There’s bound to be some crazy ass doctor chopping people up for fun out there.”

Sutton nod her head, she understood not many people follow politics or even care about it, “So what do you do? Clearly you’re not a politician, I think I can safely assume that,” Sutton joked with a small smile as she pointed to the couches to see if he wanted to move and sit there instead.

     Arms slithered towards his chest and crossed at the center as he got the hint and moved to sit in the nearest couch. “Clearly I am not. I’m actually an emergency doctor at the local hospital. Not as exciting as being in politics I’m afraid.” Evan answered back in the same tone of jest.

Katherine couldn’t help but to smile at the doctor as she could hear the passion in his voice and she could tell how he really want to help people, it’s at least a comforting thing to know. Katherine didn’t mean to cry but she couldn’t help it. Quickly she wiped her tears away, embarrassed about it, “Sorry, I didn’t meant to,” she shook her head, “God, I’m such a sap,” she chuckled sadly.

    Evan’s shoulders lifted in a shrug he understood her position. “It’s okay to be emotional over what’s happened. It’s a hard situation to be in and it’s good to let the feelings overcome you. Better than to burry them.” Much like he was doing, burying his feelings under work and the occasional whiskey neat. “If you any other questions, or need poorly given advice, I’ll let one of the nurses tell you where my office located.” He said at last with a small smile.

“Four cups doesn’t sound like a good idea, no. Probably a good thing y’decided to stop.” Evie agreed with a firm nod of her head, “Y’can just call me Evie, hon. I don’t mind.” She assured. His formalities were adorable, but not at all necessary. Once letting go of his hand, Evie clasped hers together and pursed her lips then. She rose her brows as he remembered something and she shook her head, “Y’not keeping me, really.” The girl chuckled, deciding to then pull off the apron that wrapped around her waist and then pull out the band that kept her hair up into a pony tail, letting her long, messy locks fall over shoulders. Better. “’m not doing anything all that important now, promise.”

    He inclined his head once. “Evie.” With having to be so formal around the hospital with his patients it was very hard for him to be anything but when he wasn’t working. Evan tried to think of any small talk to throw out with came up blank, it had been some time since he had dealt with a normal civilian who wasn’t puking on his clothing. He scratched the back of his neck for a few silent beats before he mentally threw the towel. “Well it was nice to meet you, Evie. I’ve just finished a full forty-eight hour shift and now I need a long nap.”
