Trope Talk: Dark Reflection

We can't all be changelings and shape change at the drop of a hat. But if you're blessed with the Dark Reflection you can get a bit closer than just Disguise Self.

Dark Reflection

Blessing, permanent boon, rare

“Those with the ability to access dark reflections are void of any shadow of their own. It’s a difficult thing to notice, but when you do there is an uncanny air about the way they carry themselves.”

As an action, if you step into the shadow of another creature, you can change your appearance and voice to match theirs. If you remain in their shadow for at least 1 minute while using their form, you can use this ability to change into their form at any time.

You can stay in another’s form for up to an hour before you revert or you can use an action to revert to your true form. You also revert if you stand in direct sunlight, lose consciousness or die.

You can use this blessing a number of times a day equal to your Charisma ability modifier (minimum of 1) regaining all expended uses on a long rest.

Hope Van Dyne/Red Queen (MCU Redesign)

Since we’ve heard that Evangeline Lilly has had an interest in exploring Hope Van Dyne’s darker sides in the MCU, I thought I would throw out this piece of an MCU-inspired redesign of the Red Queen suit her comic counterpart dons in the MC2 Universe.

Personally, if Marvel doesn’t want to risk completely destroying Hope’s character in the main MCU, I think seeing a version of as the Red Queen in a title like What If…? would give a lot more creative freedom to explore that part of her personality.

The Reflection - Hero & Carrion

What does it mean to be Shattered?

Do I disappear?

Does my body break into a million little pieces, and the dust of my soul get scattered….in the wind?

No.

It means I get to sit.

I get to sit and watch as my Ward rips himself apart.

As he cries and screams and I can’t do anything but watch. He doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do. I’m supposed to guide him.

But he rejected me.

He Shattered me.

So here I sit.

Waiting till the day he dies.

My body hurts.

It pulses with the same pain he feels everyday.

The pain of the lashes on his back.

Of the strings of his heart being pulled by a vain little Pitch.

He would call me Hero.

Nothing but poison on his lips as he said it.

He hated me.

Because I looked like the boy who would have everything he could never have.

The boy even his own sister would leave him for.

I’m sorry, Maligna.

I love you, you know.

You’re my Ward.

You’re my everything.

All I have.

All I would ever have.

And I still couldn’t protect you.

Not from your mother.

Not even from yourself.

I’m sorry.

“You know. Feeling sorry won’t help him.” The skychild’s Reflection visits me everyday. I believe his Ward calls him “Carrion.” “Neither will crying like a little bitch all the time.”

He’s a nice fellow.

“What exactly will I….be able to do...Carrion?” It hurts to speak. My body doesn’t like it.

“You and I can go find him.” Carrion’s black eyes and mouth always made me feel weird. Looking into them felt like looking into a void. One that consumed you in every way. Wrapping around your neck and constricting, yet you could always still breathe.

But you felt like you were suffocating.

Is this what the Lights feel like when they look at their Reflections?

I wouldn’t know.

“How exactly….would we find him? I’m….Shattered. I can’t….get to him.”

“Wherever the skychild is, Maligna will soon follow. Find him. Find Mali. Come on, Hero.” His hands are warm. Lights are warm, aren’t they? I’m not warm. I can feel his hand under my head. His arms hook under my knees and shoulders as he lifts me up.

“You’re lighter than you should be.”

“Was that a pun?”

“Little bit.”

He’s a nice fellow.

I don’t mind him.

The sound of shattering glass rang through the dining hall. Sky’s shout and a thud followed it, Tetra halfway holding him up, having barely caught him before he fell. Zoey quickly placed herself between them and the two new arrivals who had just landed in the middle of the floor, glass encompassing them. The windows in the ceiling above were all completely shattered, a shiny white glowing substance dripping off the shards still stuck to the metal that had held them up.

Carrion’s hair stuck out in every direction, clawed hands scratching at the stone floor as he pushed himself up. His void-like eyes seem to pulse as he looked around the room, the lack of discernible pupils or irises making the action seem even more unnatural.

“Hello, skychild. Long time no see.” Carrion smiled, no teeth to be found in a pitch black mouth. “Could use a little help here. Hero’s a bit….sick.”

I’m cold.
