i know its most likely just because of the fact that theyre kind of edgelord comedians and its an edgelord comedian thing to joke about. but even though its unintentional. Oh my goddd.

matt johnson (the real man) has talked in interviews and clearly has intention for these characters relationship to sexuality, slash the strange lackthereof. they're sexless, theyre in arrested development, they're kids in adults bodies, matt (character) isn't conscious of the sexual designs he has on his best friend, their obliviousness to sexuality is what makes it thrilling to put them in proximity to it.

and this dynamic gives all of the jokes around sexual violence a more interesting reading i think. matt is an adult child, he is unaware and distanced from his own sexuality and sexual desires, but not sex as a concept, because he keeps making jokes or references to sexual violence. older kids used to show him their scrotums as a prank, his fake girlfriend to make jay jealous is only 13 years old, he compares jay lashing out at him because his feelings were hurt to the cycle of molestation, he makes a gay pedophile character even though its obviously making jay uncomfortable, he makes his indie film in a highschool and the plot is about killing pedophiles, and not even to mention the whole deleted scene which seems to textually just be "matt had a nonconsensual sexual experience with an adult while trick or treating as a child and jay is unaware of the implications so he laughs about it while matt looks increasingly uncomfortable", holy shit

which is the exact dynamic mirrored by victims of sexual abuse, where you are given knowledge of sexuality too early and out of step with the rest of your peers and theres nothing you can do about it so it just kind of oozes out of you in an uncomfortable way. its not an element of himself he can identify with or control, he isn't able to manifest his impulses by actually consciously desiring or pursuing his best friend, so it comes out wrong and in weird ways and makes everyone uncomfortable. AND not only is he trapped, but he's jay's peter pan figure, keeping him trapped in their adult childhood fantasy forever too. its awesome sorry to say but it is awesome
