please look through the hiroshima peace memorial museum's august 6 exhibition and the stories of victims and survivors. today, august 6, is the 80th anniversary of the bombing of hiroshima, and saturday is the 80th anniversary of the bombing of nagasaki. please consider these events not only as a series of numbers or even a single day in world history but as the living hell they created for hundred of thousands of people. i realize a lot of people in the world probably don't know as much about the actual circumstances experienced by the people of hiroshima and nagasaki, as well as the indigenous people (downwinders and marshallese) affected by nuclear arms testing by the us, so instead of getting any more angry about how people talk about it (and how they dont talk about it) i just want to share. the images in those links are hard to look at but it's important, if you're in a safe place, please take the time to sit with them and what they say to you, it would mean a lot to me. all of the peace museum's permanent exhibitions are accessible for free online, i strongly recommend exploring them. & free palestine

Afraid to voice this "take" in any kind of public forum because it may be my bithiest and meanest vis a vis art discourse but i find it particularly astonishing (as someone uninterested in computer-generated "ai" illustrations disclaimer disclaimer disclaimer) to see artists that are so fervently anti-ai in art on the grounds that it is soulless and is made by "people who want to be artists but hate making art" are also specifically digital illustrators downloading brushes that do the hair for them and the leaves for them and the lace for them and the chain patterns for them and the buttons and zippers for them and the whole city backgrounds for them and things that add the light effects for them and use flip tools so they only have to draw half a face

And if you express any kind of personal dislike of the look these tools give or question if their use counts fully as "drawing" in the traditional sense (as a thought exercise in my case, I don't think it really matters if it is I just think it looks samey and ugly)? You tend to be met with arguments about Efficiency or told that disliking these tools is part of an ableist mindset but without recognition of how these are often the very same arguments used in favor of image generation (which, again, I find to be pretty flawed and strange)....and there tends to be little ability to confront questions about the importance or goal of making art centering in Efficiency anyways, which very very much ties any artist who buys into it to the worldview that creates and sees necessity in image generation/video generation/writing generation/"content" generation.

And if you point out that we have a long tradition of artists, including many that are lauded and appreciated by art history and the art "establishment" for whatever that's worth, who look to and use the emerging technology of the moment in their work? You tend to be met with a very tired and immediate dismissal of """"modern"""" art.

And when you point out this isn't just a feature of recent art but is something artists have been exploring throughout all of human history and is a natural part of society adapting to and exploring the introduction of new tools it creates for itself? You tend to be met with the idea that this moment is very specifically different because of other issues surrounding generative AI, like climate concerns, plagiarism concerns, and the idea that it is truly and uniquely "not art" in a way we've never seen before.

And when you point out that that's just demonstrably not true because previously technological advancements have also of course polluted and harmed the environment, raised humanitarian concerns, and been viewed as plagiarizing or truly and simply and uniquely "no longer art" -- and that there is often historically a progressive art movement that sees itself as focused on advancement and "the now" and exploring what is seen a exciting new technology coinciding or immediately preceding and proceeding a conservative movement that maligns the new technology as worthless as the new society as degenerate? You tend stop getting responses at all, or else have things get lost is misunderstanding of what the words progressive and conservative mean and the idea that the way politics and social movements can cross lines with these kinds of cultural movements in ways that might seem counterintuitive.

And also so many of these artists that i've talked to that cannot hear any discussiong of generated art without thinking you're a charlie kirk supporter or whatever also use chatGPT all the time
