incredible advice unfortunately
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Okay so we all saw him at the end of the movie not suffering under 2Gs and looking healthy, right. And we all saw the chess set and the plants. So I wrote a fic about all of that! Many thoughts under the cut:
As far as I can research, yes these are true facts about Captain Cook. The Hawaiians did cook him but not to eat, it was a respect thing. They were in awe of him. The scurvy-solving thing was something I read a few years back in Sapiens. All of this together is a nice setup for the scurvy solving and later auto cannibalism. We set our scene with Grace loading Chekhov's gun and setting it gently on the mantle.
The scurvy solution I got from this patent here: https://patents.google.com/patent/CN102023191B/en . Yes I looked first but making vitamin C from scratch was to complicated for me and my intro-to-chemistry uni knowledge. In the book Grace mentions his food is dehydrated and he describes a varied diet, so I think it's fair to assume had dried citrus around. In fact the patent is for getting vitamin C out of fresh fruit, so the Galaxacious Variant involves rehydrating the fruit peel too. You would need to do this as microwaves are very good at vibrating water particles.
Boom. Patent improvement, just for you Ryland Grace.
I had to make an obligatory en passant joke, because it made me laugh.
"We called them ♫♬♫♬♪, which means something like “volcano lust” but that is not a perfect translation."
The work Rocky is looking for is Volcano Fuckers.
“Funnier in Eridian, I guess.”
Yes this is an old Supernatural reference. Sue me, I'm old now too.
As far as I can tell, the stuff about the fire extinguishers is true. Don't ask me how I got some of it, Eva Stratt did the same thing. And while the chemistry is pretty basic, I think using a fire extinguisher in this way is novel. Boom. Another new thing just for you, Grace. Please also enjoy this second Chekhov's gun I just placed in your hands.
I don't actually know that much about chess. It compels me, though. I wrote the Icelandic Gambit scene with a Lichess tutorial open on the other screen and after a few drinks.
Oh shit, the iron ball scene, I should add a tag that I'm assuming the reader's read the book and know there are some book elements incorporated into the fic. Ahhh shit.
Onto my favourite pet peeve in fics. Whenever the characters get together and watch a movie, it's always goddamned disney for some reason. Feel good family friendly nothings too. Why? Here's your opportunity to draw parallels! Show what a character is feeling!! Anything! So I put Life of Brian in, mostly because my dear favourite of all time Kenneth Colley plays Jesus in the film, but also because of the parallels between the two films. You can learn more in my shitpost here.
Yes I listened to all those orchestral pieces while writing this. I think I'm actually a Beethoven fan now. Classics are classics for a reason. Didn't watch Swan Lake though.
Only Lovers Left Alive - a depressing romance, they might die, very sad and tragic. They also know each other better than anyone else in the entire world. Haven't actually seen this one, but if you were here in 2013/2014 you probably saw the Tom Hiddleston eating the blood ice block. Blood popsicle. Look I'm so good at writing American characters. Yards and thanksgiving and pounds. Saaan Fraaaaaancisco.
The Devil's Hour - time loop (classic Galaxacious) about a guy living the same years over and over and over again, the depression, the hopelessness of it. And he tries to share it with someone else. I am drawing parallels and I am having a great time doing it. Good show, too. Peter Capaldi's in it.
The whole subconscious tongue movement thing was something I read (and worried about) about a decade ago. Thought it would be fun to throw in! How's this for the mind control phm enjoyers, add some mind reading in there too.
The unusual space-rock-opera band? The Mechanisms.
The gravity. Can we talk about the gravity? I just don't think a space elevator would be safe enough to have all that water sloshing around in there. Too many things could go wrong. One wrong move and Grace is a smear on the water-covered xenonite wall. The only way to do it safely is on a moon.
I also wasted sooo much time running numbers on space elevator distances. Way too much. And all of it wrong, because I missed that Andy Weir gives us how much mass Erid has and how big it is. I'm the dumb one. But Erid's equatorial speed should be correct! Proud of that one.
But Galaxacious, you say, Grace says in the book there was no moon. Well he was wrong. It's very simple.
Manchester by the Sea - a movie about a guy who just can't get it together. He just can't, he just can't. I think Grace wouldn't like it because it would remind him too much of himself.
The Man Who Loved Only Numbers - book about a brilliant but eccentric man whose habits made it difficult for the people he loved. A good read. I think Grace would like it.
I took out the scene I wrote for the tagging game. It was getting long, and I didn't think I could write the scene I had in mind with the emotions I had in mind.
Beetroot fume hood scene. Chekhov's gun, aimed and fired. Did I write the whole fic for just this and the next scene? Maybe. I don't have to prove anything. Fellas is it gay to tie your best friend down and play with his hair and force him to listen to compliments -
Also I just checked, 5 out of my total 14 fics have some sort of hand or finger related trauma. Probably means... something. We don't have time to unpack this now this write-up is getting long.
And we finish on Erid and with chess. Honestly, now that it's done I regret not going a bit crazier with it. Very tame fic. Could have had a lot more nonsense. Did not write a particularly snappy summary. I held back too much. We cannot let the readers know that the author yearns. Maybe that's why I made that secret second ao3 account all those years ago
Well! Anyway doing all this research was fun. I have a short fic planned centred around Eva Stratt and then that will likely be it. I'm sure. We just gotta get it out of our system. Yes. Hope you enjoyed my little fic and this almost equally as long write-up hah
Minor update:

I take it ALL BACK I had a commenter say it way the best phm fic they've ever read. Peace and love on planet Galaxacious

Came across this art installation, Liza Lou's Kitchen, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC. It's a kitchen made of tiny glass beads, that artist Liza Lou did, taking 5 yrs. to complete, from 1991 - 1996.

It took me a solid thirty seconds to realize that Phragmites was probably the genus name of the plants in the picture and not, like, an ancient Greek warrior waiting in the marshes to attack.
