Halloween Drop-Off || Julia & Vaughn

Julia made sure to leave some gifts specifically for Vaughn by placing them all atop the desk so that they’d be the first things he would see whenever he does wake up on Halloween morning. It was a little bit hard to work on the gifts over the past few days, but she made sure to find time to finish things whenever it seemed like Vaughn was busy or distracted. There were some occasions where she had to borrow Molly’s room for crafting her surprises, which gave her plenty of time to work on other presents along with Vaughn’s since Molly had her own things going on.

As for Vaughn’s gifts… She made a grumpy looking Pumpkin Bat for him, a Ghost in a Jar, and a Pick Your Poison candy jar. Hopefully he would like everything!

Once the “Happy Halloween, Vaughn!” card was set up, she hurried away to drop off gifts elsewhere and didn’t make plans to return any time soon.

Vaughn wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary upon waking up on Halloween. It was more or less just another day at school, after all. Maybe Molly would’ve set up some sort of prank or trick, he supposed. But then, that required her to put the effort into setting it up. And it required her to care enough about tricking him in particular which, barring what happened at the Renaissance Fair potentially tempting her to get back at him, seemed unlikely.

So, to wake up and see a few festive things sitting innocently on the desk... It surprised him a bit. Glancing over the little collection of gifts, it was clear enough that this was a Julia Thing, rather than a Molly Trick. The card only confirmed this fact.

He didn’t notice the smile tugging at his lips as his fingers drifted over the pumpkin and jarred ghost. He picked up the ghost, bringing it closer to his face for a moment before setting it back down and going over to his phone. It didn’t take long for him to pull up his texts with Julia and type out a short  new one.

[To Julia 🐾 :] Thank you.

He’d have to find or make something for her soon.

Bothersome “Buddy” || OPEN

He looked the just the same as when she left some years ago. Well, he was taller and a deeper voice of course. Hehe, wouldn’t that be funny if he was still the same height from when they were kids but a deep voice or vice versa? She couldn’t help but giggle at this thought. 

“But it’s cuuute!” she pouted. 

Another thing that hadn’t changed apparently, his demeanor. A part of her was glad to see that the old Vaughnie– err “Vaughn” hadn’t changed. It was just like when they were kids! But that attitude, he wasn’t about to have that sort of thing at least while he was around her. 

...What was that giggle for? Vaughn wasn’t sure, brows furrowing and body tensing just a little bit more. Whatever she was thinking about that caused it, he was suspicious.Or at least wary anyway. The fact that she moved on to pout and defend the nickname might be playing a part with that wariness though.

“Lanna, please. It doesn’t even fit me,” he refuted with a scowl, crossing his arms. After a moment’s thought though, he made a conscious effort to take down the severity of his expression. She was a friend, not a nobody trying to get a rise out of him or anything. Not someone to (somewhat unintentionally) scare off with hostility or his scary face.

Even if the name was cute in her opinion though, why did she want to call him by it? It only made his name longer. adding an extra sound to the end of it. He didn’t understand the point of it...

A little voice || Vaughn & Komari

Her hand remained there, awaiting for the next step in this process. Still waiting. In fact there was a silent, awkward pause in this moment. He’s not going to shake her hand, isn’t he?

“……….” Maybe he has a thing against germs, that could be it. Or she came off too strong. Perhaps that. The student’s hand slowly retracted back onto her side. Best she ought to roll with it now. “So Vaughn, nice to meetcha’ ! “ A pause. “ Oh-crap-I-already-said-that–Uh— Lovely weather we’re havin’ out in here!” Komari tried to shrug off those looming vibes she had, pulling it off as if she were preparing to swing her arms. Her laugh was obviously nervous and forced. This was awful.  It wasn’t that she couldn’t talk to people at all, that part was easy– but when you had to think about what you are doing, it doesn’t seem to come right at all.  “Actually Vaughn, I’m sorry–I shouldn’t be havin’ such a hard time with this exercise at all, y’know? I mean, talkin’ shouldn’t be that difficult. But hey, it is really nice to get the chance to talk to ya.  “

Vaughn didn’t understand the long, awkward pause that happened between the two of them, post initial greeting. Outside of the potential that the way he held himself made Komari uncomfortable.It wouldn;t be the first time he’d caused that sort of reaction from a classmate after all.

The reason for the pause soon became clear though, as he noticed her arm slowly dropping.

...Hell. He hadn’t even noticed she’d gone for a handshake.Had that pause been her waiting for him to take her hand? And he just left her hanging, oh goddess. Now the conversation was off to an even worse start than before, as was whatever impression he was leaving on her.

This was... uncomfortable.

“...” Komari was certainly a more active classmate than others, Vaughn decided. And more obvious with her discomfort. Though... he preferred that over when they’d try to hide it. It made it easier for himself to gauge his own words. On the other hand though, she was saying a lot with too small of pauses for him to quite respond fast enough.

So, he waited and let her finish, even if the apology brought his own awkwardness with talking to the forefront of his mind.

“...It’s fine, Komari. I... I didn’t really give a very charismatic response earlier. The teacher’s mentioned before that this sort of thing is a two way street.” Although her phrasing might have been... a touch different. Either way, he supposed. The last part of her apology caught his attention however, prompting a blink of confusion. “Why?” He left it at that, as if Komari would already know what exactly that question was directed to.

If I Can Do This, Then You Can Do That || Vaughn + Julia

Today had been.... A day.

That was about the best way Vaughn could describe it, after all the shenanigans that had gone down. Not to say it had been a bad day or anything, far from it. Even with the catastrophic Boat Ride, and Rachel doing... Rachel things when she popped up, it was fairly nice and relaxing. Largely because of a certain company he kept for the day, mind you.

Although he would say they didn’t spend near enough time around the animals the Faire had.Never enough time with animals.

With everything and how eventful the day had been though, Vaughn hadn’t really been expected the last curve ball it’d throw. The Renaissance Faire’s staff, loudly and openly encouraging and pulling people to dance at the final event of the day.  And it didn’t seem like they were really taking “No” for an answer.

Fun.

“Julia,” he said after a moment, glancing over at his best friend as the music played and people danced. It.... It seemed like the sort of thing she’d like to participate in. Although it made him more that a little uncomfortable, so many people there potentially watching. Judging. But he could focus on her and push those less than helpful thoughts to the back. She always made him calmer

“...Did you want to dance?”

Renaissance Fair? || Julia & Vaughn

Seeing Vaughn nearly jump out of his skin made her feel a tinge of guilt, but jumping out at him like this never got old. She never really understood why she liked getting him to show her these different expressions of his, nor did she ever question them too deeply anyway. In that moment, he tried to hide himself with that trademark bandana of his, so she decided to tone things down a bit since she didn’t want to break him. Not exactly, at least.

“I wanted to extend an official invitation to the Renaissance Fair!” Cutting right to the chase, as per usual. “You’ll say yes, won’t you?” The blonde wore a neutral expression for now, deeming it unnecessary to whip out the puppy dog eyes before he’s had a chance to accept all on his own.

Vaughn couldn’t quite help the twinge of disbelief that entered his eyes, nor his mouth twisting to one side. This... This is what she jumped out at him for? To ask him to go to the Renaissance Fair? While the realization certainly helped the stress drain from him, he was just.... He wasn’t sure. Embarrassed still, yes. But he was also.... relieved?  And anxious? Though he wasn’t really sure why those feelings were popping up now, after she posed the question.

“The Renaissance Fair?” He echoed after a moment. He remembered seeing something about that, papers filled with information about what was essentially a field trip. "I guess so....” He didn’’t sound very confident with his answer, but it wasn’t like he’d really turn her down or anything. He did worry a bit internally that she’d prefer to have someone else in her group than him though. After all, it wasn’t like he was a particularly fun person to have along with the sorts of... Adventures she causes, more the one to try and pull the breaks on it than to just add like some of her other friends.

Fortune’s Favor

Well now.... This was uncomfortable.

Getting a Tarot Reading wasn’t really something Vaughn had planned on doing. It was more of an impulse thing, something that briefly caught his attention. He wasn’t even going to do it, until someone else in the group encouraged it. It wasn’t like he was someone who believed very strongly in fate, or there being a larger reason beyond things happening other than circumstance. But then, curiosity is a funny thing, isn’t it?

He was kind of regretting doing this though. As the Fortune Teller read off the cards and their meanings, he found himself growing rather uneasy. The cards he picked and their meanings..... They were hitting weirdly close to home.

He supposed the first one wasn’t.... bad. It definitely didn’t make him feel as uncomfortable at later ones did. It was mostly just an encouragement to have hope, that things will be getting better. And after that was the Empress. It still sounded fairly innocent, like the sort of thing anyone might get for their card.After all, everyone wants comfort, security, and happiness, right?

And then things started falling into place as one disconcerting puzzle.

The Hermit, the fortune teller had said, told of his fears. Fears of loneliness and being on his own. Fears of having no one. It also said something about trying to avoid hasty decisions and not stress out about them, but he was a bit too focused on the first part to really absorb that information.

And then came The Lovers, which was just as it sounded. Vaughn had to advert his eyes at that, face feeling warm just from the implication.

Judgement was what was apparently working against him, which he absently noted was probably a fair assessment. The fortune teller said he shouldn’t let fear hold him back, and that he should accept change as it happens, since it’s vital at the moment. And the The Hierophant, reminding him that he wasn’t alone, that there were others in his life who could help him, should he need it.

This fortune, just about every part of it.... It felt too on the nose and weirdly specific. Vaughn realized it was probably just chance, and the Fortune Teller being good at making what they said sound convincing but.... He didn’t know.

...This was going to be stuck in his mind for a while.

Dressing up really wasn’t something Vaughn was comfortable with, especially when the theme of Robin Hood lead to most related costumes involving a weird hat or tights. It was lucky, he decided, that he was able to find a fitting costume that didn’t involved the two aforementioned concerns.And even better, this one had a hood.

It gave him somewhere to hide.

Letting out a small breath, Vaughn grabbed his bow and left the dorm to find his group.

A little voice || Vaughn & Komari

@doicarrotall Just another mundane Monday that it was, while Komari sheepishly stumbles into the classroom, scratching her sides while yawning. It was far too early to do do class, much even to even to do any talking. Generally, she was a morning person at most times, but the student stayed up far too late on a call back home. Her father seems to be doing well, that brought her some peace. Komari sits in her seat and waits for the instructor’s instruction. The boldly colored haired woman was always interesting to watch, but it was more of her hair that caught Komari’s attention. She wondered if she could ever pull that color off. Probably not. It was too girly and it didn’t quite suited the sweatpants wearing, oversize sweater attire she sported that day. ( Hey, it’s comfortable. ) The teacher then paired the students with a rather simple task: To have an open ended conversation with one another. Sure, it sounds easy in concept- but when you are paired up with the silver haired cowboy ( It was a little nickname she and her father called people back in Westown back at home. ) who seemed to be so distant,mysterious, and aloof– Komari never knew what to expect in even having a simple conversation with him. You gotta start somewhere, though.

“So…um–yea– hey. “ Oh that was a bad start. ‘um’s and yeah’s aren’t really in good etiquette. ‘ Komari  furrowed her brow and squinted her face in wake of her error. “ Let me try that from the top again, please. “ She takes a quick breath and then passionately smiles as if were to come easy for her, all whilst she extends out a hand. 

“Howdy! Name’s Komari and it’s nice to meet ‘cha!” Oh no. she messed up again.

Speech class really wasn’t one of Vaughn’s better subjects.It took place right at the start of the day, something that didn’t quite pair well with his already standoffish persona. Nor did the fact that the teacher had a rather..... loud appearance, but that was neither here nor there. Really, who wanted to talk and act pleasant that early in the morning?

Certainly not him.

He couldn’t say that the class asked for anything particularly difficult though, outside of making himself more personable. Talking clearly, getting the point across, and even maintaining eye contact were easy enough. (Although eye contact was harder to maintain when he started getting distressed or embarrassed.) The hardest part was making sure he didn’t come off as rude or hostile. And also “smiling,” as he’s been told by plenty of people before.

Of course, his own speech issues became easy to ignore when paired up with one of his more confusing classmates.

He didn’t remember her name, not fully. It started with a “K” or “C” sound, and ended with a “Ree”. Calamari? ....No, that was some kind of seafood. Again, something that didn’t really matter in the long run, he was sure he’d hear her name again, at some point. Otherwise, he’ll just avoid saying it.

What did matter right now though was...

“...Howdy?” He mumbled, brow furrowing in confusion. He let go what she’d said before that, having opted for a blank stare, if with a slight head tilt.

But, hey, she gave her name again, so there’s that.

“...Howdy, Komari.” He couldn’t help but mimic how she greeted, head still stuck on the word. “ ‘Name’s Vaughn. It is..... nice to meet you as well.”

He didn’t exactly give her much to work with, in terms of this open ended conversation they were supposed to be having.

Renaissance Fair? || Julia & Vaughn

It wasn’t unusual for a certain blonde to come back to her dorm a little late than the average student would, even though she only had nowhere else to be after class on this fine evening, so that wouldn’t have surprised her dearest room-mate, Vaughn. However, what would actually surprise him would have to be the way she quietly tiptoed over to their room and carefully made her way over to him while he had his back facing her the entire time. Before announcing her appearance, Julia made sure to strike one of her cutest poses and even threw in a big smile to make him question whether or not she knew she would scare the daylights out of him in a few seconds.

“Hey Vaughn!!! I have a question for you.”

Vaughn was alone in the dorm room, this he was sure of. With the dormmates, and his specific roommate, it was always pretty obvious when they were around. They weren’t exactly quiet. That was fine however, being alone right now gave him the time to crack open the book he’d taken out from the library. It was more or less just a big book of dog breeds and facts. Something to read and relax with.

Of course, right when he was getting particularly engrossed by the book, a certain Someone made themselves known.

Jumping at the unexpected yell, Vaughn whirled around to face the culprit, heart beating a mile a minute. “--!!” Blonde. Blonde. Familiar. Cute pose. Julia. His hand went to his bandanna, gripping the fabric as he worked to calm himself back down.

“I-- Julia.” He averted his eyes, face feeling warm with embarrassment. “...What do you need?”

Some of these classes weren’t as easy as they looked or sounded. Like Ancient World History in particular. Maybe she could hire a tutor. Or someone to do her work for her. Just a thought.

Lanna was a chatterbox but she had to go to the library today; which meant she had to be silent, or quieter. If she was going to make good grades, then she had to work at it. Even if it meant she had to do everyone’s least favorite thing..Studying. She plopped herself down at a table and started looking through her notes. It wasn’t even five minutes after before she noticed the person at the table. 

“Vaughnie! I haven’t seen you in forever!!” she exclaimed, now lowering her volume a bit, “How are you?”

To say Vaughn immediately recognized Lanna would be a lie, if one he felt kinda bad about. It wasn’t like she had the sort of face or personality one could easily forget or confuse for another. Her hair was longer, but still the bright blonde he remembered. And her face was similar enough, he probably should’ve made the connection easily. But he hadn’t been paying attention, not in full, to how she looked. It wasn’t registering as something to remember...

Until he heard the nickname.

“....Lanna,” Was his choice of greeting, posture stiffening minutely at the nickname. He was torn, emotionally. It was.... nice, seeing her again, rather than just hearing some vague snippet of information from something that happened during her idol years. But at the same time.... The Nickname....... “I-- It’s nice to see you again. But.... Don’t call me that.” There was a pause and then. “...Please.” The name was just... too cutesy for him, too friendly. It didn’t fit someone as prickly as him, not at all.

Cooking Chaos || Vaughn + Julia

Nobody was perfect, her mother always said, and that wasn’t any reason to completely give up on trying things even if you fail again… and again… and again. Which is the number reason why Julia felt compelled to sign up for the Cooking Class, as well as the Cooking Club, to hopefully improve her utterly terrible “cooking” skills before she’d end up having to live on her own one day without her mother holding the reigns. Today was no different from any other day though, she was still just as bad at following directions or even using her taste buds to their full potential compared to last week and there wasn’t a silver lining just yet.

Apparently she was doing such a poor job this time that she managed to catch her best friend’s attention. Ouch, the look of concern on his face really hurts the ego. Vaughn certainly didn’t appear to have any confidence in her.

“I’m making a lasagna! I promise I’m following the recipe step by step this time,” she responded cheerfully, winking at him to hopefully convince him that there was nothing to worry about here. However, upon further inspection, one would find that the pages of the recipe book were actually stuck together so she went from reading the Lasagna recipe to a Coffee Cake recipe. Any use of salt was thrown out the window for the large amount of sugar that coffee cakes required. Tomatoes, black pepper, cream cheese, brown sugar, and minced onion were all sitting together as if they actually belonged together…

Julia decided to throw the question back at her friend to pull his attention away from her fiasco-in-the-making, “What are you making, huh? Do you need any help or a woman’s opinion perhaps?”

To say Vaughn was skeptical would be an understatement, his eyes staying firmly rooted on her ingredients. It wasn’t like he was much of a chef himself, but something like that was just.... completely off, wasn’t it? Half of her items definitely fit what she was making, the tomatoes, pepper, and onion, bringing to mind the Italian dish. But then there was cream cheese and sugars. Lasagna didn’t have sugar in it, right? Even if it did, he had a pretty good feeling it didn’t have as much as she was adding.

Maybe..... maybe it was just a weird recipe. Like the ones people put up online where they substitute a load of it and put odd twists on them?He had to hope so. The alternative wasn’t.... promising, to say the least.

“....If you're sure,” he finally said, sliding his eyes to her face and then off to the side. He’d let that go for now, trying to trust Julia’s words.

“Oh. Churros.” Was his short response to the reflected question, eyes drifting over to his own set up. It wasn’t something that took forever or had complicated instructions, and it was something he wouldn’t mind eating himself. Of course, Julia also had ask additional questions. And it’d probably be rude to ignore them. “And I don’t need help.” Not that his phrasing or tone made answering them seem any less rude. “I mean-- What would you.... suggest?” Was his corrected answer, a few seconds later. If he looked slightly uncomfortable, it wasn’t something that could be helped. Asking for help was difficult, even when he was asking Julia.

Cooking Chaos || Vaughn + Julia

Cooking class was an..... Experience.

That was the only way Vaughn could think to describe it. There some in that class who were really skilled at making food, ones who seemed to live and breathe the chaos of a kitchen. And there were plenty of students in the class who were good or decent, or even just generally passable when it came to what they made. They could cook well enough that it was at least edible, if messy or overcooked.

And then there were.... a certain few........

“Julia....” He called out, eyeing the spices around her station and the one in her hand. While he had to pay attention to his own dish, he hadn’t been able to ignore the menagerie of ingredients she had on hand. “...What are you even making?”
