IAN GRIMM & POPPY LI in MYTHIC QUEST
You know what the best part of this has been? You and me doing it together. Ol’ Ian and Poppy.
#i’m not saying ian has a type #but ian totally has a type (for @teruel-a-witch )
You know what gets me? How Ian says “You were happy”, all soft, to Poppy in 1x07, talking about the old days when it was just the two of them, and then season two finishes exactly like that: the two of them alone at the bar, ready to embark in a new adventure together, “like the old days, no fear, no anxiety”. All he wants is for her to be happy and they at their happiest when they are together.
#can we talk about this
a post for no one but i think there are genuinely some connections to be made between slings and arrows statement on art and genius and bad behavior and mythic quest’s. specifically, i’m thinking about cw’s line about ian being a hero and david not really getting it but cw very genuinely meaning it. and about the lack of respect that video game writing has in the literary world, but how to him this is the purest expression of art and meaning and truth and all of those things versus in a show like slings and arrows that very much mocks or eschews that sort of modern entertainment (ie, season three on musicals) but at the same time the way darren nichols and the musical performers as much as it’s mocked by the Shakespeare company, are managing to move people and create some truths for some people. i dont know how to tie this all together, but what should art be if not “good”? should be authentic, above all else? should it move or entertain or stir to action? i feel like this is even a question that goes back to Backstory! and cw’s own novels – he is proud and happy with what he is writing, even if it isn’t asking deeper questions, even if it’s very sexist and even if it’s kind of just a lot of weird porn sometimes. he doesn’t want to make art that is “better”. hm. okay. i’ve gotten a paragraph in and said nothing. send post.
Let’s be real here, the second Poppy and Ian walked out of MQ for the last time, the Art Department had the BIGGEST party and you know what? Good for them.
people on twitter may hate me but i will still write shitty fanfic to cope.

MYTHIC QUEST: RAVEN’S BANQUET (2020- )
peak character design is when a duo is like
1.01 // 2.09
a significant part of poppy's character development has been accepting that she and ian are friends and not just co-workers and that he really cares about her and that it's okay to care for him in return.
for reasons yet to be revealed (we need her backstory in s3!), poppy is a very guarded, emotionally closed-off person, who clearly put up a lot of walls to protect herself, which naturally prevents her from getting close to other people and from other people getting to know her.
for this reason almost all their vulnerable moments of real connection were initiated by ian. he had to keep reaching out and making the first step.
in the pilot when he admitted to his feelings of inadequacy, when he told her about his abusive father, when he offered her full partnership, how relentless he was in the quarantine episode with his concern for her, he even was the first one to say he misses her...
typically he practically has to scale her walls to get her to open up, which can be really frustrating, to constantly put yourself out there only to be shut down in return, and his frustration reached it's peak in the hospital, when he told her to just go, even tho it was clearly the last thing he wanted. but here is how things changed - she stayed willingly.
unlike in 1x08, when she called him a dramatic asshole for mournfully staring out the window, because she didn't want to feel bad for him, so she was trying to pretend they never mattered to each other (and now I hear you found somebody new // and that I never meant that much to you // to hear that tears me up inside //and to see you cuts me like a knife is literally from soundtrack to their car ride i wish i were kidding ) and was determined to push him away, she only ended up staying because circumstances forced her to.
in 2x08, she chose to stay by his side even after he tried to push her away, because she finally accepted he really is her best friend and it's okay to let herself care about him and be cared for in return and a big part of that is showing vulnerability (singing) and trusting that you are not going to be hurt or mocked for doing it.
Mythic Quest’s “TBD” Feels Like the Last Day of School
(It is a feat of the show’s writing that her cruel treatment of her employees doesn’t diminish the endearing bond that she and Ian share. On the contrary, theirs is a frictional and show-stealing friendship; one that could only be forged between two profoundly pathetic and brilliant people. As they cannot bear to collaborate with anyone else, they enable each other’s artistry as much as they hold each other back from maturation. Ian teasing Poppy with “Unless you want a real job” in the final celebratory drinks scene encapsulates the heart of their partnership: they are both afraid of growing up. Building new worlds with each other makes them feel imaginative and childlike and free. Ian doesn’t want to face his responsibilities as a dad, and Poppy doesn’t want to confront how socially and emotionally behind she is in life. They are both in states of arrested development, prone to distraction and codependence. But as they drink and laugh over an inky napkin, reminiscing over the past and preparing for the future, what else is there to feel but hope?)

jos little smile because she knows that brad is doing this for her and he says it’s because it makes him seem scarier but she knows that it’s because he doesn’t want to see her hurt and he knows she knows that but it just something for them? yeah.
