black sails season 2 is the best season of television ever made. in a single episode you have civil war breaking out among the pirates and politics being reinvented by people who’ve divorced themselves from civilization. the b plot is polyamory drama not dissimilar to the kind that can be found on bravo tv and features crazy lesbian sex but also some guy is there. interspersed in all of this are flashbacks of one of the most beautiful and tragic queer love stories you’ve ever seen. and to top it all off, billy bones comes back from the dead. the perfect show in every way

being a teenager is basically just half a decade of "ugh I hate myself I hate my life I hate my parents nothing is fair everyone is mean the world is cruel I'm tired of it!! but idk i guess every teenager has this phase and I'll probably grow out of it and understand when I'm older" and getting older and realizing you should have been even angrier and more violent. she was just a 19 year old girl. she'll never have the chance to grow into the woman she could have been. fuck the way this country is. before she was anything else she was a PERSON. a human being is dead because of the hatred spewed by the idiots that run this place. do you know the energy it takes to stab someone 40 times? My therapist, who specializes in adults with ADHD, recently told me that all of her clients need a three day crashout period after a big life change. Finish the semester? Crashout. Change jobs? Crashout. Go on a really cool, really relaxing vacation? Crashout the moment you get home.

It's true of literally all of her clients. She works with a lot of them to put systems in place so that their crashouts are only three days. This includes the high-powered execs who travel regularly for work. It does not matter how successful or high functioning they are - they have ADHD, and a crashout is just part of the process of living with it.

I'm sharing this with all you ADHD friends out there, just in case you (like me) start shaming yourself if your crashout lasts more than one day. It turns out three days is kind of the best case scenario. Be kind to yourselves!

what people don’t understand about how adhd is disabling is that it’s not just getting temporarily distracted from, like, school work or hobbies. it’s getting distracted/being unable to motivate yourself to go to the doctor, eat regularly, do hygiene tasks, etc. it’s not knowing when or how long it will take you to do something, ANYTHING, and in many cases that thing is taking a shower or keeping your house from turning into a biohazard. it’s about being fundamentally incapable of controlling your attention and focus on anything, even and especially things you need to do to survive.

a thought for handling "can't tell if using personal examples to relate to somebody's situation is helping or making me look self-centered" is to bring the personal examples back to the situation of the person you're talking to. name why their thing reminded you of your thing ("it made me feel alone/scared/angry/abandoned/whatever") and then ask if you're on the mark with the parallel or not. possibly straight up tell them that you're not trying to make the conversation about yourself; you are trying to see if you are reading what they're going through right. connect the dots for them of what you were trying to accomplish by sharing your personal anecdote so they can tell you if it's helpful or not

thinking about the time also with some former roommates where one of them half jokingly was like "man i love monday because the kitchen is always spotless because Story cleans it on sunday" and i was like "what are you talking about" and they were like "you deep clean the kitchen every sunday?" and i was like "? no i don't i have absolutely no idea what you mean."

we went back and forth for 30 seconds and it got awkward really fast because it turns out all my other roommates thought i just had a compulsive need or some sort of desire to deep clean the kitchen every sunday and they just left me to it.

when in reality i was meal prepping for the entire week every sunday and when i finished i cleaned up after myself obviously—wiped the counters down, scraped gunk off the stove, scrubbed the sink, and swept the floor.

took me 10 minutes but always left it looking great.

then i didn't use the kitchen the whole rest of the week because i'd just grab my prepped meals in the morning and go out for all-day fieldwork.

but apparently nobody else ever cleaned up after themselves at all when they cooked. like they'd just leave food on the stove and counters and drop shit on the floor etc. and not clean it up so they thought every monday morning the kitchen was "deep cleaned" simply bc there wasn't old food on every surface.

i was like, "...........i've noticed the kitchen is always messy when i use it on sundays but i've always figured someone just used it and didn't get around to cleaning it up yet and i didn't mind because i'm always about to make a mess anyway............y'all just use the kitchen like that all week?"

and one of the guys (very funny, i liked him) looked around and realized I was the only woman* (*closeted at the time) living there and he went "this is really bad, like, optics wise."
