So I think I covered maybe 10% of Maxiel content, maybe 9? Just to give a couple of examples. And I have only one question left. Where're the wedding photos and how many babies they already have?
"For some reason people think Max and I are dating" or whatever he dared to say.
For week 20 (!!!) of GBB weekly prompts: karting. As much as this was an easy prompt, I really had a hard time deciding what to write for it and actually getting the words out. This is set sometime in my feral teeth max au, but is a lot less miserable than usual. About 1k.
Daniel smiles, watching as Max crouches down next to Isaac's kart, his hands moving as he tells him something, Isaac's helmet moving up and down as his head bobbles into a nod.
It's very hot today, almost too hot to spend the day at the karting track, but the kids had insisted, and Max's eyes had been pleading too, even if he hadn't expressed his opinion out loud, so Daniel doesn't mind sweating a little, dust sticking to his skin.
It's nice having Max here, and not only because the kids clearly love him, unconcerned by what Izzy had immediately claimed were very cool teeth, Mr. Max! (Daniel had seen Max flinch at the words, smile disappearing, but he still had said thank you, still had ruffled Izzy's fine hair with a gentle hand). It's nice because here, away from the rest of their world, in the quiet expanse of the Australian summer, Daniel can see Max slowly come back to himself, drop the walls raised during the season one by one, his lips pulling back a little more while he laughs, his fingers hesitating for a split second less when touching someone.
He doesn't think it will ever stop hurting, seeing how much of Max was being stripped away every day, chipped into nothingness by muzzles and suspicions and accusing words. Here though, they don't have to worry about that. Daniel's parents are a bit wary, but not unkind, and the kids think he's the coolest person ever, maybe even more than Daniel, what will all his championships and European accent.
Max pats Isaac's head for a moment, then helps him get going again, zooming down the track with a squeal Daniel can hear from where he's standing.
"He's got an eye for it," Max tells him quietly when he joins him, words slightly muffled by the helmet he's also wearing. He hasn't been in a kart yet, but he told Daniel it was to lead by example, show the kids safety was important.
Daniel thinks it's more for the safety of being able to talk and laugh without worrying about showing his teeth, for the familiar weight of it on his neck, a comforting buffer between him and the world that had always been so cruel towards him.
"He does, but he doesn't care about putting in the work for it. Give him a few more laps and he'll be begging for ice cream."
Max giggles, clearly unconcerned by Isaac's lack of racing hunger, tugging a little at the straps of the helmet, digging uncomfortably into his sweaty skin.
"Want help taking it off?" Daniel asks, knowing already what the answer will be. Predictably, Max shakes his head, eyes fixed on Isaac, still speeding around the track.
He's keeping his face tilted down a little, looking up through his visor in a way that must be uncomfortable, but that is so familiar to Daniel at this point he doesn't even try to point it out. Max was 13 the first time Daniel had shaken his hand, and even then he had spoken to the ground, looking up at him through his eyelashes.
"Do you remember being Isaac's age?" he asks instead, feeling himself smile. "I was such a menace, copying homework I hadn't done because I had been sneaking out to drive, or I had lied about having none."
Max laughs, throwing him a sidelong glance before going back to looking at the track.
"I had already been pulled out of school, so I don't know much about doing that. I remember of course being disqualified from a karting competition."
Daniel blinks, turning to look at him with a frown.
"What? What did you do?"
Max shrugs, apparently unbothered if not for the sudden tightness of his shoulders.
"I of course had done nothing wrong, but that doesn't matter."
Daniel frowns harder, fully turning to the side to face him, arms crossed.
"What do you mean it doesn't matter? Something must be wrong for a disqualification, it's not like..."
"I had done nothing," Max repeats, cutting him off, something sharp in his voice that Daniel has come to recognize as his way to hide being hurt. "Another kid said I had threatened him, that I would bite his tyres open. It did not matter what I said."
Daniel's pauses, feeling stricken.
He thinks about it, about Max, tiny and shy, small like Isaac is right now, being thrown out of a race because of a lie. He thinks about Jos, swelling with rage for the injustice, unable to prove the opposite, unable once again to make things right for Max. He thinks about the world punishing Max for something he couldn't control, again and again.
"I'm sorry, that was unfair," he murmurs, squeezing a hand on Max's tense shoulder.
"It's of course okay, I won other races, made it to f1 anyway."
That doesn't make it right, Daniel wants to say, it doesn't mean it didn't hurt.
He stays quiet instead, following Isaac's wobbling racing line through a corner.
"I haven't thanked you for inviting me to your farm, Daniel," Max suddenly says, even if he has, multiple times. "I like being here with your family, even if I am of course intruding."
"No intruding Maximus, we like having you here too." Daniel's voice comes out maybe a bit too soft, the ache for old injustices he can never hope to fix still tender between his ribs, but Max doesn't comment on it, flashing him a smile he can't see from anything but the wrinkles in the corner of his eyes.
"When Isaac is done, do you want to race me? Just three laps, loser pays for ice cream?"
The question seems to surprise Max, but he still lights up, nodding enthusiastically.
"Are you sure your old man knees can handle it?" he teases, already stepping away from Daniel to avoid being poked in the side.
"I'll show you my old man knees...!"
They run towards the track laughing like kids, Daniel trying to grab for Max and Max squirming away giggling, the kid who had to accept unjust accusations, head tilted towards the ground, hidden in the back of a memory once again.
