Okay so here’s a concept for your local homebrew fantasy hellscape, that sprung out of a chat with @deandominos. It concerns goblins and why they should concern you, or your players, or whatever.

Get this. Goblins, by and large, are dumb. Not stupid in the people-stupid sense, but their intelligence is animal and limited. They use tools, communicate through something like language, and so on. But they’re nasty little spindly fuckers with very little flight in their fight-or-flight response. Combine that with a quarrelsome nature, and little in the way of interpersonal loyalties that hunger or the slightest dispute won’t undermine, and goblins tend to die young.

However, goblins are an old species, rudimentary because they’ve not really had any evolutionary call to change over the ages. Like sharks, lobsters, and other awful things found in the deep places of the world, whether underground or in the dark reaches of the sea. And like sharks and lobsters and shit, they have a very long biological fuse. If something doesn’t kill them, goblins can live very, very long lives.

So, as I said, most goblins die before they can play proof of concept. But not all. Some survive, get tougher, get cunning, learning from their mistakes, growing rangy and hard with scars and savage surgeries. Some get wise, get rich with long years of scavenging. Some become so impressive to the younger goblins around them, and their own successive broods of children, that they surround themselves with packs, hordes, nests of goblins led by and looking up to their more patient and crueler intelligence. Others start thinking themselves so clever that they grow disillusioned and disgusted with their own kind and strike out on their own, prowling the world’s deep and wild places with a patient but self-serving greed guiding all that they do.

Most goblins are stomp-fodder. Little parcels of easy XP you don’t have to feel too guilty about opening up in a gooey fashion. But sometimes you’ll encounter one that’s been goblining for 60 years, 200 years, 400 years, and so on… And then you can remind your players: #NotAllGoblins

since coming to korea i joined three (3) separate d&d games. i made an awful blind cannibal forest witch for one of them. her name was magically removed from her memory for Backstory Reasons and the party christened her Woodface, because she wears a wooden mask like 90% of the time.

her interests include: running around the woods as a giant wolf, being mean to the cleric, and enabling the already recklessly murderous barbarian to be more reckless and murderous because she thinks it’s hilarious

CALLING ALL FALLOUT FAN ARTISTS

Registration for the Fallout Reverse Big Bang opens at 9 AM EST TOMORROW, Jan. 23. If you are a fan artist of any kind (this includes you, mixers!), you are invited to join in on the fun! In a Reverse Big Bang, artists create a fan work (art, video, fan mix, etc) and authors write a 4,000 word minimum fan fiction to accompany it. This is a great way to connect with other fans, and to come together to celebrate the Fallout universe. Fallout fans of all stripes are invited! No matter which game you create for, you are encouraged to participate. Likewise, it is my intention that this space is welcoming for creators from all walks of life.

favorite anime/manga: Y’know, I’m not that big of an anime/manga person: outside of Studio Ghibli films , I’ve watched and liked Akira and  Neon Genesis Evangelion and...that’s about it. Seirei no Moribito / Moribito was OUTSTANDING and I’d like to watch more series like it, so if any of y’all know of other animated adaptations of Japanese fantasy novels, let me know!!!

favorite video games: I love Fallout: New Vegas enough to name my blog after the second most disgusting old man in the Mojave Wasteland. 

Other than that: TES games (mostly Skyrim and Oblivion*), Dishonored,the  Mass Effect Trilogy, the Soulsborne games, the earlier Assassin’s Creed games (up to and including Revelations; the series jumped the shark once Ubisoft REALLY started putting emphasis on the Ancient Aliens part of the story).

*I love Morrowind’s setting and story like No Other / am full of Vvardenfeels always and forever, but you couldn’t make me replay it to save my life.

favorite books: That’s a really tough one. I don’t have a list of all-time favorites, but there are some books I’ve read upwards of three times. Some of these are: Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Ann Leckie’s Ancillary trilogy, C.J. Cherryh’s Foreigner and Rider at the Gates, Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, Catherynne M. Valente’s Radiance, Ekaterina Sedia’s House of Discarded Dreams, Garth Nix’s Abhorsen series. The Secret History of Moscow (also by Sedia) deserves a special mention: it’s a damn good novel, and it’s...it hit home and is representative of my own background, I suppose: it’s a Neverwhere-like book about my home city, written by another expat Muscovite and full of little glimpses into some of the less-known parts of its history and 90s Russian Disillusionment. 

favorite tv shows: I am a simple creature. I like sitcoms, Twin Peaks, and the first season of True Detective. 

favorite movies: What We Do In The Shadows.

...as well as Snowpiercer, Inception, The VVitch,  Hot Fuzz (+ most films directed by Edgar Wright, tbh), Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Mad Max: Fury Road, Alien, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, True Grit (the remake), Kill Bill (vol 1 & 2), Mowgli (the Soviet animated version of the Jungle Book, which is Superior to Disney’s Jungle Book in every conceivable way).
