I’ve been around awhile. I find fanfiction to be incredibly important to me, but honestly, i’ve always been able to shrug off the idea that someone didn’t want me writing fic. I mentioned AR’s work in fic when I was young and had it pulled. Did it suck? Sure. But I also have a deep respect for copyright and people’s feelings. We allow fanfic authors to deny reposting, archiving, etc. We are fine with them saying, “please don’t write a sequel to this without my permission.” But when a real author says it, it’s a big fucking deal. Look, i think the C&Ds were overboard and scary; though, for the folks who received them when they were young, I imagine AR didn’t think young kids were reading her books.

Fanfiction is not the be all and end all. It isn’t “dark humor” to find delight in a person’s DEATH because you wanted to write fic and someone didn’t let you. It seems a bit more than that. if you want to take issue with someone’s religious beliefs and shit like that, ok, I can sort of get behind that because it has an effect in some larger way, but if your literal glee in the wake of someone’s death - not 24 hours after it is announced - is based on the fact that you had to secretly write fic... I’m sorry, that’s just not a good enough excuse to be a shitbag.

AR wasn’t perfect. Believe me, I know. I may write about that in the future. And I’ve certainly written about it in the past. it’s on my tumblr and twitter; it’s not hard to find. But maybe, just maybe, in the immediate aftermath of a person’s death, maybe it’s just a really shit take to have? Especially when this person had no political or social power to affect your life in any meaningful way. This isn’t fucking Limbaugh or Bush or someone who actually could affect change in a terrible way. This was an author who wrote pretty damn queer vampires that were outsiders. I don’t know. I suppose for me, personally, the last thing I’d want when I die is people only thinking of the ways I fucked up for the first 24 hours and not maybe the the things I offered. We are all imperfect beings.
