A question:
Did schools stop teaching basic grammar? Or is there a “new rule” I’m unaware of?
I’ve noticed a trend at the studio. We bring in artists to record scratch dialogue but the younger ones get thrown by grammar. For example, the script will read (total made up names):
Marsha: How are you, John?
& if the scratch dialogue artist is older they will read it as “How are you John?” One thought.
But if they are younger they read it as “How are you … John?” Two thoughts. Like they’ve never seen John before or John dropped dead while they were talking to him.
Every one who is younger than me (I’m 34) does this pause. Which makes me think it’s not just one guy messing up or the ol’ “they’re artists, they didn’t excel in that area of school” joke. Because it’s all of them. We even have one guy, same younger age, who’s here from a European country doing the same thing!
& they get really thrown when I call another take saying that comma isn’t an acting note but just grammar. They just don’t get the comma’s use in that instance.
What am I missing? Is it some internet fanfic trend I missed? Am I old? Is it the 1984 book & they’ve started rewriting the language? Are public schools failing?
I know I’m caring too much about this but it’s driving me nuts!
Since it's been asked, scratch dialogue is where we record dialogue for the cartoon before we record the actors. This way we can see how things are going, if the script is working, & make changes as necessary. It's much cheaper to rerecord a new line of dialogue when it's the board artist or HR person volunteering their name then to rerecord the actual actors. Every once in a while scratch actors make it into the final, but usually that's not the case.

Try Perk (perk.com - my referral code 5d788220). In addition to the usual fill out surveys, watch ads, check into places you're at IRL, they have apps that pay you to watch tv. Even streaming services like Netflix.
They have their own Perk TV & Perk TV Live! apps (Apple/android) that let you check into whatever you're watching & get the same gift cards you would from swagbucks. I believe the live app is closer to what you're looking for out of the 2.
They also acquired Viggle (apple/android) which does the same thing but has a cleaner interface & also some trivia games you can do at the same time for more points. (Although I miss the ability to get paid for listening to music in the app- perk killed it in the acquisition). I use this one.
None of these will pay the rent, but if you do it right it'll help or cover the cost of Netflix.
