Been putting this off so I'm going to do it even if it doesn't come out perfectly, the Campaign that Red was in ended and is awaiting a possible part 2 so I just wanted to share what I had for him before closing the book on this game and moving to the next.
Red's origin was partially inspired by Gyro from HxH and his baseline personality by Fighter from 8-Bit Theater, a complete dumbass from the worst home possible but too optimistic and upbeat to even consider how fucked up his childhood actually was. I didn't touch on his birth parents in the story because they weren't important to Red or the plot, and if either of them were still alive, he wouldn't know what do to about it. The dad being a drunk and the mom likely dying young were the most that was said about them, but I like to think he inherited his hair color and baseline personality from his mother if they weren't wholly out of nowhere.
Red's later childhood and adolescence were influenced by his admiration of warriors and samurai in his region, as well as the nobles and the beautiful people he would see while looking up from the gutter. Taking what wasn't his, touching what he couldn't have, and going where he shouldn't became his favorite hobbies as well as a method of survival. It was here he encountered the artisan Madame Musubi and her finely crafted clothing, and Red began to understand the perks of the posh and the noble. Picking up a stick and playing samurai by smacking other kids and wild dogs was his way of imitating, coping, and preparing for his future.
Skipping ahead a bit, and with a tonal whiplash I do apologize for, before he was 18 he was arrested and sent to a school for wayward boys to either die or become an asset to the state. These boys were made to fight one another with live steel, consume demon blood to mutate their own bodies into stronger forms, and indoctrinated into loyalty to the emperor and the clan that controlled the region he had been born into. It took almost no convincing and I like to think Red completed his education with almost psychopathic gusto, I think he's too naive to consider things could be bad until it's pointed out to him.
His talents and predisposition for violence earned him an invitation to a noble house, one that bet on him dying young and useful for them, something he still doesn't understand. It was here he met his future wife Yoake the shrine maiden, and the seeds of liking another person as more than just a friend were planted in Red who until now seemed more likely to marry a sword than a person.
As we near the point of the campaign starting, Red's request to hire the artisan he had once considered the greatest in the world was granted by the family that had adopted him, and upon being called by the Emperor for a quest he thought himself to be on top of the world. The quest itself would be long, painful, and reveal things about his world that he still hasn't completely processed. But alongside the going into space, meeting the moon warrior, the shared collective dream about piloting a giant mech, and getting married, probably the best part was when he raged and simply flat-out abducted Madame Musubi from where she had asked to remain simply because he felt like it and was refusing to back down even in the face of being wrong in every way. After many stories and monsters whose lessons were that samurai doing whatever they want caused horror all over the land, he ultimately became a samurai who did whatever he wanted, though it's yet to be seen if he will become as terrible as he likes to pretend to be when he's trying to scare people.
And that, in summary, is Red and his campaign. I've been lucky enough to get into a new game and get interested players in the one that I'm doing next so I think fun things are on the horizon.
