My online friend of 14 years suddenly stopped talking to me about 2 years ago (it will be 2 years in May). We met on GaiaOnline when I was in the 6th-7th grade. To say I was devastated, is putting it lightly. He meant so much to me, and still does. You can’t erase the memories of youth.
That being said, I was just cleaning out some of my emails and noticed I had a notification from his Gaia account (January 2025). He sent me a private message (I sent him two about 8 months into him ghosting me, as a last ditch effort). I’m too afraid to open it. I’m not sure what to do.
I’ve been asking for closure all this time, and it’s at my fingertips. Yet, I almost don’t want to know the answer. Either way, I know it will not be good or something I really want to hear. I’m glad he’s alive, but I know it will only confirm that he doesn’t want to hear from me anymore. I guess ignorance really is bliss.
If I never open it, perhaps I could go on pretending that something just came up and that it wasn’t that he didn’t want to be friends anymore. I truly feel like that angsty teen once again, panic taking over. But while I can’t help what I feel, I can control the actions I take.
I am grateful for the assistance I have received so far, but I am still in need of more support to reach my campaign goal swiftly. This will enable me to evacuate my family from Gaza 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸.

My name is Ashraf Alanqar, and I am 30 years old. My wife, Widad Issa, and I have a one-and-a-half-year-old son named Bakr. We used to live peacefully in the Al-Shuja’iya neighborhood, in a house we built just a week before the war began. I worked as a farmer and owned a large chicken farm that provided for my family.

Then the war came and destroyed everything. Our home was reduced to ashes, and our chicken farm was obliterated. We lost our home, our livelihood, and even our basic rights. We've been forced to move from place to place in northern Gaza, simply trying to survive.

The terror we feel as we flee from heavy bombardment is unbearable. The sound of explosions around us, the constant fear as we navigate through the rubble of destroyed homes searching for safety and food, haunts us every day. My son Bakr is constantly scared and suffers from severe malnutrition and skin diseases due to the lack of food, water, and sanitation.
