When you are a computer scientist everything you see is binary!
Childrenās literature is very diverse when it comes to topics. Until now, I never realized how topics such as computer science have been integrated into childrenās or young adult literature. This is an interesting sub set of children's lit!
Exercise 25
Rubyās Password: Rubybitmouse6@
This is an important life lesson anyone can pull form Hello Ruby. In light of recent events, credentials use to login to websites are being stolen at rapid rates and sold on the dark web. It is known that many people use the same username and passwords for multiple websites. If your login credentials from one website is compromised, then the hacker can try to use those credentials on multiple other sites to steal money, or personal identification. Be sure to change your passwords every 90 days and donāt use the same one for multiple sites.Ā
This has to be my favorite part of Liukasā, Hello Ruby! This glossary gives children or anyone who is looking for a basic lexicon of computer terms, easily understand what is going on.Ā
STEVE spreads his arms to hug O'BRIEN, but she stiffens and turns to pick up her papers from the table before them,
Monster (276)
Well, how dare ask this question.Ā Who would you cast in your own A Wrinkle in Time adaptation? Why? When you have Reese Witherspoon and Opera all in one movie, there is little room for deviation. This cast worked great together and I would not change a thing about it. I think the director used a strong and diverse group of women in the making of this movie.Ā
If Monster by Walter Dean Myers, was a turned into a movie, it would need a strong soundtrack. Following the theme of the book, the unknown verdict would play a role in selecting songs. The beginning of the book starts with the story that Steve Harmon is on trial for murder. However, it is unknown what his life was like before on trial. If a movie, I would choose Project Patās I Aināt Goinā Back to Jail song as the opening song. This would immediately build suspense, as Steve would be introduced as a gang banger who would say anything to get out of going to jail. Thus setting the tone for the movie.Ā
āTo tell you the truth, I don;t think it is going to make that much of a difference. This guy looks like a basket case and heās going to act like one. I donāt want to hold the case up while you convince this guy to wear a suit. Letās get on with the case.ā -Judge Monsters (172)Ā Ā
I am not sure what to think about this courtroom scenario. The judge seems to not care about this one individual, but what are the effects that it would have on Steveās case? Or how does this play into the theme of stereotyping throughout the book?
āI realized that the five guys doing the mopping must have all looked alike and I suddenly felt as if I couldnāt breath.ā Monsters (129). From an audience perspective, this quote is very revealing. I think it drives home to the audience, especially people of color that there is an uneven share of people of color than whites in our prisons. As Steve realizes this, it is a hard pill to swallow and makes the term Monster, feel more like an identity.Ā Ā
On page 59, Steve explains the situation in prison and how it affects the psyche of the inmates. He informs readersā prior to this statement that the guards take away shoelaces and even your belt so that it will be difficult to take your own life. Here I felt the struggles that inmates actually go through, that they would resort to using these things to harm themselves. I cannot imagine the kind of darkness that each inmate must feel inside of them throughout each day. But, I must look at both sides of this situation, because each person in prison is there for their own infringement of the law, and the law must be preserved to prove justice. So, the life in these conditions have the potential to inflict as much pain as they have caused to put them there.Ā
This passage struck me as well, I recognize that for the most part those who are in jail are there on their own doings or because of their own actions but Im not sure this form of punishment is the most productive rehabilitation for offenders. This passage allowed for those of us who have never experienced this isolation to imagine just how dark and lonely you can get. Would this isolation be considered productive to rehabilitating offenders? What is the overarching goal of this isolation for the offender?Ā
This passage made me think of ways that the justice system is failing when it comes to the rehabilitation aspect but is succeeding in the area of removal from society.Ā

You're young, you're black, and you're on trial. What else do they need to know?
Walter Dean Myers fromĀ Monster
Within the first 88 pages of the bookĀ Monster, written by Walter Dean Myers, there is a strong hint of the shortcomings we face in out justice system. In the quote above, Myers gives the audience a cruel look at what it may feel like to be an an African American in a court room. In addition, there were many instances where he pointed out that our prison system is not a place for rehabilitation, but a place where criminals are held and can continue illicit acts.Ā
What Professor Stover and her husband felt like after the hail storm in Austin.Ā Ā
In the movie A Wrinkle In Time, I didnāt see where Calvin fit in. Charles Wallace made mentionsĀ that Calvin was being brought along, as he was a good diplomat. However, he failed to deliver in the movie. The only value added was in realizing where evil exist, as it flashed backed to him not meeting his father expectations.Ā
In The Magic City, Chapters 9-11, Philip showed a tremendous amount of immaturity. The image and quote above, āHe walked straight into the arms of Helen,ā illustrates Philipās desire to always be with Helen. This could also be a play on gender roles, as Philip was raised by Helen, which possibly may alter Philips view of the traditional gender roles for women. Further in the reading, and many times before, Philip looked to Lucy to conduct theĀ ābrave acts.āĀ
When Lucy has a question.
In chapters 5-8 ofĀ The Magic City, Lucy continues to ask Mr. Noah questions. This causes Mr.Noah, great frustration. However, Lucy is always the character who has the idea that works. So, does asking questions lead to answers to problems?
Itās out!
At The Cushing Memorial Library, I found an adventure map of the 007 books Ian Flemming produced. Although on a search for childrenās literature, it was incredible to see the outline of the Bond books!
