On March 14, 1945, the word that Barnes had been killed in combat was wired back to the New York. Where possible, the headline ran on evening editions. The next day, the tragic news appeared above-the-fold on every newspaper in the United States and in every major metropolitan newspaper across the world.

On March 15, the Barnes family received a telegram notifying them of Bucky’s death. The following day, they received a personal visit from five-star General George C. Marshall’s personal adjunct officer to offer the Army’s formal condolences for the loss of their son—and to make up for the fact that the news had been released before the family had been officially notified.
