I dreamt I was back in Uganda last night; I was crying because I was so happy to be back there.
Super lovely message from the founder of East African Playgrounds! :â) This has well and truly made my day!Â
Reflections...
Hands down, the month I spent away in Uganda was one of the best months of my life. I wish so badly that I was going back out there again this year. I donât think anything can quite prepare you for the moment you touch down on African soil; itâs a different world over there, but itâs a magical one.
One thing that really struck me though was just how happy the people were. They donât have any of the luxuries we take for granted on a day-to-day basis, they live with the bare minimum facilities, yet I very rarely saw anyone without a smile on their face. The games the children played all the time didnât revolve around computer games, they were outside using their imaginations and enjoying each otherâs company. They revelled in going to school, and they enjoyed their learning. We built them a playground so they could have a safe area to play, to encourage them to have a proper childhood. When we opened the playground, seeing just how much they appreciated it made absolutely all the hard work worthwhile; that moment is something that will live with me forever.
Since returning to the UK, over the past six months I have so easily adjusted back to life with all the luxuries. Sometimes I just have to stop myself to remember how important it is to truly appreciate everything - from flushing toilets, to showers, to being able to turn on a light!
I miss waking up to the beautiful scenery each morning; I miss being cut away from all the technology; I miss the people; I miss the atmosphere; I miss making such a difference in the lives of all the children each day; I miss how absolutely everyone was so welcoming; I miss sitting out under the stars in the evenings; I miss the care free feeling being out there gave me; I miss the long days; I miss East African Playgrounds; I miss Buwenda Primary school, and the children; I miss Uganda.
Uganda. Uganda. Uganda.
To say my experience in Uganda changed my life would be a bit of understatement to be honest. It was the best month and I miss it all so much.
I have the Uganda blues.
Day 32: Monday 15th September, 2014.
I started trying to watch different films on the plane, but I just kept falling asleep. I did watch an episode of âHorrible Historiesâ around 4am (UK time) when they gave us breakfast. We landed 40 minutes early at 6:40 & then had to wait until 7:15 for the plane to have a space to let us off! We went through passport control rather quickly using these face recognition machines, and it didnât take too long for us to find our suitcases! We walked through the airport and found everyone waiting for us! I gave Mum the biggest hug! We said bye to the others, then headed for the car park. I spent most of the journey talking about everything I could think of. I was reunited with my phone, and we stopped somewhere outside Ipswich for a drink and a slice of cake!Â
Chocolate milkshake & chocolate cake!
The journey absolutely flew by, & we were soon home. Joy, Peter & Jazz were waiting for us! I then spent a while telling them about all my adventures! I had to ring up the doctors and then go and see Dr Morton about the bite on my bum. I now have a bucket load of tablets to take in order to help it!
And that marks the end of the diary entries...
Day 31: Sunday 14th September, 2014.
I woke up at 4:25am this morning feeling absolutely AWFUL. I felt like I was going to throw up so badly and nothing was helping. At 5, I woke Rachel up and she came to sit with me outside. At various times Beth, Fiona, Same, James, one of the girls from York St John, and possibly others nipped outside to go to the loo. Nearing a reasonable hour, Fiona joined us outside permanently & Beth told us that the sky looked really pretty, so we moved to near the toilets for a better view. We watched the sun rise over Lake Victoria & it was so beautiful.
Sunrise over the River Nile.
It was over so quickly though â blink and youâd miss it. It hit 7am, and we finally headed back to bed. So many people seem to have upset stomachs today. Everyone else seemed to be getting up, but I managed to sleep for another hour and Rachel for much longer. I got dressed and went to buy chipatis for breakfast with Tori & Stacey. We sat on the steps outside eating them & then I filled in some of my holiday diary until Rachel was ready to move up and about. We went for a walk to see the lions again, and this time the male was about as well as 2 females. It was so incredible to watch them so closely. The male, whoâs 18 years old and incredibly frail, was having a drink from the pool of water.
Lion & Lioness!
We stopped to stroke a camel on the way back, had pictures with the zebras and then we bumped into Tori & Jamiul who had collected all the money, had a quick look around the shop, and then went to pick our suitcases up from the room. Cramming all of us, plus suitcases into these little matartus was not fun. Only one of them had a roof rack so we had one row of seats full of suitcases and had to cram 4 of us on each row of the matartu. It was horribly stuffy too. Luckily, it was only a 10/15 minute drive to the airport. We were meant to stop at the mall to grab some lunch, but our driver just didnât stop! We had to go through security to get into the airport, so we all had to get out of the matartu and then cram back in again. We all arrived at the airport with various suitcases. We had 2 from the York group, who had actually stopped at the mall! We had to carry all the cases up the stairs & then we got to the doors to go in. It was time for a rather emotional goodbye to Chris & Harvey. There were plenty of tears and tons of hugs! We had to go inside and through security and through security scanners straight away. As we were queuing up to check our luggage in, they waves goodbye to us for the last time.  We checked in our luggage, got our plane tickets and found our way through to Duty Free. After a quick toilet trip, we met everyone in the restaurant for a bite to eat. I had a bottle of water and some chips. Rachel bought a chess set & we changed our remaining shillings back into dollars. It wasnât long before we could go through the gate. We had our bags checked through security and then it was just a matter of waiting to get on the plane. They let us on & eventually, we took off! I watched âWreck it Ralphâ on the plane, ate the chicken, mash & veg we had for dinner, and then fell asleep listening to the Les Mis soundtrack. I tried watching âMaleficentâ, but I fell asleep. It wasnât too long before we landed, & then it was time for a trek through Dubai airport! We went the wrong way to begin with, then got confused in a lift, & eventually we found Duty Free & McDonaldâs! I got a Happy Meal with chicken nuggets and orange juice.Â
Favourite moment when we got FRESH JUICE AND ICE!
Dinner on the plane!
When they gave us orange juice on the plane to Dubai, it was the best moment. Back in Dubai airport, we found some chairs to sit on. Some people slept on the floor & I wrote in my holiday diary. Time flew, and it was soon time to say goodbye. Tori was crying, but the rest of us held it together (somehow)! We started all walking the wrong way, so had to back track and say goodbye again. We had to get the train down to the A gates & then ours was one of the closest. Stacey bought a bottle of water & we got on the plane!
Today's blog is one of many tears. I finally got around to making this video, and wow. All the memories have just come flooding back.
Best. Experience. Ever.
Team Buwenda!
So, I realise I've never explicitly introduced you to our incredible team in Uganda! When East African Playgrounds were recruiting, there were so many keen students from York that to fit us all on to projects, four of us were moved across to a project with Huddersfield University! We also had the pleasure of Stacey from Canterbury Christchurch, as she was unable to go to Uganda with the rest of her university team. Sometimes I found myself wishing that we'd have gone with the rest of the York project - it's so much easier to have reunions when everyone lives in the same place, but I wouldn't have changed our group for the world. They are all incredible and everyone worked so hard! <3
Our team leaders were James & Tori! Then from York there was me, Rachel, Lois & Beth! Stacey joined us from Canterbury Christchurch, and then we had Chris, Sam, Fiona, Aimee, Chloe, Jamiul & Harvey! :D
Back row: Sam, Tori, Fiona, Lois, James & Chris. Second row: Harvey. Third row: Beth, Jamiul, Aimee, Rachel, Chloe, Ronald & Stacey. Front row: Dan & Katherine.
As I mentioned yesterday, we handed out awards on our final night together! It was so lovely to appreciate everyone for their individualitiesÂ

GO TEAM BUWENDA! <3
Day 30: Saturday 13th September, 2014.
Alarms started going off at 6:30 this morning, and there were no less than 8 going off at various times! Fiona and I put all the chairs outside for breakfast, and we had out last breakfast together â pancakes!
Breakfast pancakes!
Everyone packed their bags and we cleared the room. It was so sad! L People signed each otherâs t-shirts and it was soon time for us to leave. We walked down the hill & Fiona and I had a quick go on the swings whilst singing âAmerican Pieâ. The matartu arrived and the builders helped to lift our suitcases on the roof and pack it all in. We then had the rather emotional task of saying goodbye to the builders. The tears started flowing when I said bye to Dan, and it just went downhill from there! Bolt said he wasnât going to say bye to anyone who was trying, and then told them to take my bag off the matartu because I was going to stay! We took so long that the York lot turned up. The tears were still flowing as we drove down past the playground and on the way to Carla & Tomâs EAP headquarters. We all jumped out and met up with the other projects and to collect some water and our passports!
Team Buwendaaaaa!
Third project group photo! :D
We had a massive group photo, and one of our group with Bash & Scott, and after some initial confusion over which matartus were going straight to Entebbe & which one was going to Kampala first, we were sat on them ready to leave! After lots of waving goodbye & having to send James in the other vehicle with the York lot, we were on our way. I was sat between Rachel & Chris on the second row back. Chrisâ seat was broken so he kept falling all over the place! We were sat chatting away about home and university. We stopped at one point by some people who were selling bits and pieces at the side of the road. Loads of people bought some chicken on a stick! Somewhere near Kampala, we stopped at a garage! I got a bottle of coke, vegetable samosa, an apple & a bar of Galaxy. We continued on our way and seemed to take loads of bumpy back roads. The traffic on the main roads was pretty crazy & I fell asleep for part of the way. It didnât take too long to get there considering. The York group & James had beaten us to the zoo, and we headed to our room to grab our beds. We then visited the cafĂŠ to get a snack & a drink. I shared a portion of chips with Rachel. The last matartu arrived at the zoo with our suitcases, and we went on some adventures around the zoo. They had some donkeys there, as they were running donkey rides, and there were a couple of camels casually hanging by the park. They had an enclosure with antelopes and zebras, and a âpoke your head through and take a photoâ board. We then turned the corner and right in front of us was this baby elephant!
Rachel, me & the baby element!
Well, it wasnât fully-grown & was rolling around in this pile of mud. We found some zookeepers who were keeping an eye on it & we were able to go up and stroke the elephant! It was the most incredible thing! We all took plenty of photos before looking at monkeys and the lions were just around the corner. We spotted 4 lionesses relaxing in the shade. They had hyenas (who had their backs to us) and owls and rhinos â not half as incredible as they are in the wild! We sat emus and various birds, and then headed to see the chimpanzees! Two of them were rolling around together â it was brilliant to watch.
Chimp!
Another chimp was using half a ball (so it was shaped with a bowl) to scoop up water to drink. After that, another chimp was using all the tree branches he could find to try and get an apple or something out of the water. When he managed it, he was chased up the tree by most of the other chimps. We left them in the trees and went to some glass cages where they had tortoises and big ole pythons.
Chloe, Aimee, Rachel & Harvey in the tree!
We found this absolutely gigantic Elder tree. Chloe, Aimee, Rachel & Harvey then climbed up to one of the branches. We moved on to see some not very exciting baboons. This random woman also asked for a photo with me by the bottom of the big tree. We went in search of giraffes and found this antelope like creature standing right next to a fence. Chloe, Aimee, Rachel & I went right up to it so we could stroke him. He was licking their hands too.
Chloe, Aimee & Rachel!
We spotted a couple of giraffes, but they didnât quite match the ones on safari by a long way. We walked back to see some otters and crocodiles. We found the elephant again â he was playing with a plastic chair and he gave Rachel a big sloppy kiss! ;) We then headed into the Information Centre. It was full of stuffed animals and animal skeletons. They were absolutely massive! We headed back to the room and sat around for a little while, before diving into the queue for showers. They were disappointingly cold and grimy! L We sat up on the upper bunk and I wrote in my holiday diary, whilst everyone else did their hair and make up. Tori did a plait in my hair, and then it was time to leave. Me, Rachel, Fiona, James, Sam & Tori went ahead first and caught bodas to the restaurant.
Bodas to the restaurant!
It was so beautiful! The sun was setting and then they put colourful fairy lights and colourful lights projecting on the walls everywhere. The view shone over Lake Victoria too. They had an acoustic singer with a guitar too â he was singing so many good songs! It just gave the place such a lovely atmosphere! I had a milkshake to drink (delicious) and a chicken kebab with garlic naan for dinner. Me, Tori, Jamiul Beth, Chris, Lois & James all had the same! Before the food arrived, Tori & James handed out all the awards! I'll post you everyone's awards another day! :)
Rachel & I with our awards!
It was so lovely to make everyone feel appreciated for their individualities. Food soon arrived and it was absolutely amazing! We even ordered cake & ice cream for dessert! The music kept playing and we had a few sing-a-long sessions. The evening did start to drag later when nobody knew when or how we were going to get back. It was 11:30 and the restaurant was shutting. Some people were talking about going out into Entebbe, but we all just caught bodas home in the end. There were only 3 outside, so one of the drivers went to find some more, whilst the other two took Rachel & I, and Beth & Jamiul back. It was absolutely terrifying when the front light on the boda blew and we were in near pitch black for most of the way back. I was glad to get off it! We all headed back to the room, where most of the others from the other groups were back. I got ready for bed, Rachel helped me to put my mosquito net up and I fell asleep.
Our Playground!
Here is our final playground! From the plain, rocky field we started with at the beginning of the project, to a huge playground for the children to all play on! :D We have
The shopping area - Radio Buwenda, a restaurant, garage & pharmacy, with a matartu, bodas and a couple of cars!
The Red X of tyres!
Zebra print recliners!
2 giraffe themed sets of swings - one larger & one smaller.
Drums & a xylophone!
2 see-saws!
A very colourful tyre wall!
A caterpillar!
A tyre cross!
A zig-zag of tyres (not pictured)!
The complex of rocks, vines, a river & waterfall, complete with lily-pads!
Day 29: Friday 12th September, 2014.
I woke up this morning just before 7 and sat writing my diary. We had chipatis for breakfast, and we sat eating in the girlsâ room to avoid the mad rush of kids. We sat chopping up names and sorting out all the voting system for the awards. We then all votes and I sat writing away again! We went to sit outside for a little while, and I wrote more in here. Rachel & I headed down to the playground to take photos of it before the madness of later. We chatted away to everyone and before we knew it, it was time for lunch. Theyâd killed a goat especially for us to eat. They asked James & Sam to go and watch it being killed because it was partly their way of saying thank you. I had rice and pasta for lunch! After clearing up, we got ready and cut up out t-shirts so they were slightly more airy, for the opening celebrations.
Girlies!
We headed down to the playground about 1 so we could take loads of photos! They started playing music through the speakers; they started playing âHeroâ and I just burst into tears! We were all madly singing along, and only realised when it got to the second verse that they were playing the Spanish version of the song! Some of the others started crying, and we were all a bit emotionalâŚ
Me & Moses, the head teacher of Buwenda Primary School.
Me & the Mural!
We all had photos with each other and attempted a group one of self-timer (on the first try, one of the little boys walked right in front of it).
"Boy walks in front of camera!"
TEAM BUWENDA! <3
Tom came to tell us that they were running behind schedule, but eventually we all piled into the classroom with the builders and various members of the community. Martin was the Master of Ceremonies, and talked us through what was going to happen. Some of the children came in and they danced and sang for us.
The children dancing for us!
There were a couple of guys playing drums too, and it was absolutely amazing! The headteacher then made a speech thanking everybody. He is just the sweetest man! The chairman of LC1 did a quick speech next â and it was super quick. Martin talking again, and I was crying already by this point. The Chairman of the Parents then did a big long speech in both English and Lusoga. The councillor wasnât there, so we moved straight on to James & Toriâs speeches. They made me cry even more â especially when I saw Tori welling up, and even more when they started handing out all the certificates!
ALL THE TEARS (and Rachel laughing at the tears)!
I couldnât bring myself to read mine because I knew it would make me cry every more! Quite a few people were crying reading through them. Dan did a speech and Ronald was translating it into English until he couldnât be bothered anymore. Tom then stood up and did a quck speech. His digs at James were hilarious and some things he said and then turned to Faisal and said âDonât translate that!â. He thanked all the builders, gave James & Tori photo frames to thank them for being awesome team leaders, and also to Hannah & Stuart who appeared at different times. When he finished, Martin said something about Tom opening the playground and we all headed outside to see hundreds of children running down to the playground.
Children on our playground.
We walked out of the classroom to this... wow.
The mad complex!
It was absolutely incredible to see & I just burst right back into tears again! It was just so wonderful to see how much fun the children were having on the playground, & it made every single second of our hardwork worthwhile. We ran around the playground taking loads of photos and playing with the children. They had speakers and started blasting out music into the classrooms at the bottom.
SO PROUD OF EVERYONE.
The mad dancing room!
There was so much crazy dancing going on â it was madly brilliant! I went back to the playground for a while & then it was back to the mad classroom. This one little girl had hold of my arm and was going absolutely mental! I escaped to go and refill my bottle of water just as their bell went for assembly, which was held on the hill outside. We all gathered near the bottom of the hill and James gave us EAP questionnaires. The children mostly went home, and we all filled in the forms.
Rachel, me & the girls!
We then sat outside with some of the older girls at the top of the hill, and played with the cameras. They kept videoing instead of taking photos. Carla arrived and we stood chatting for a while. We then had a massive group photos with all the builders & Sarah.
TEAM BUWENDA!
We then had dinner with roast potatoes, spaghetti, and the goat theyâd killed for us in a stew. I didnât really fancy it. We sat outside the kitchen for a while talking to some of the older girls again. Harvey had bought everyone drinks, which was lovely of him, & we headed down to the classrooms where they had music blaring out! Everyone was dancing madly to the (rather disappointing) music. It kept cutting out too. We did get Rachel up at one point, despite her vigorous protest. All the builders, Vicky & these random Ugandan guys were dancing madly. I eventually gave up with the music and joined Rachel outside. I went back in when I song I recognised came on, and this guy took my hands and was madly jumping up and down for the whole song. I returned to Rachel & we sat outside until the music stopped. It then didnât stop and nobody knew when it had to. In the end, I just went to the room, and to bed.
~Hands down, this was my favourite day of the whole experience by far. It made EVERYTHING worthwhile. Seeing how happy those children were because of the playground we'd built was the best feeling in the world. I don't have the words to describe just how incredible this day was. This diary just doesn't do it justice in the slightest. Opening that playground was one of the best moments of my life.~
Day 28: Thursday 11th September, 2014.
I woke up at a reasonable hour (for here) and avoided most of the kids on the way to the loos. We had eggy bread for breakfast and it was lovely! After getting dressed, we headed down to the playground just after 8 to add the finishing touches. We had to shovel mud down to the tyre cross and spent the rest of the time picking up stones by the different apparatus. That dragged on, but eventually we finished! We headed up to fruit break and I had pineapple and watermelon! James then had to do the mud bucket challenge, so Harvey threw a bucket of mud over him!
James' Mud Bucket Challenge!
Rachel & I stayed sat on the ledge around the corner chatting and sorting everyone into Harry Potter houses. Vicky came to talk to us & said how bored sheâll be without us here! We went back to see what was happening and everyone was down at the playground because the sand had arrived! Weâd missed most of the shovelling, but were in time to celebrate officially finishing the playground! WAHEEEY! We sat around for a while until lunch, for which I had rice & potato salad. I sat with Rachel & Tori outside the girlsâ room writing my holiday diary. There were children there asking us questions and giggling away. They then brought us over an orange â but it was green!
This is an orange.
Abs was sat explaining it all to us. Faisal soon arrived, after weâd begun packing, and we began the Arts & Play session. We were making crowns with them, and gluing on leaves and flowers.
Making paper crowns!
Chris was chatting to Ivan, so I went and joined in with them doing questions. Faisal set him a question on the area of a trapezium. We then ordered bodas to take us to NRE, so we could have a drink and a shower. It was lovely! The York group were there too, so it was good to catch up with them. Tori, Rachel, Lois & I came back here to having dinner with Aimee and Fiona, and we sat chatting. James & Sam returned and we tested James with the Harry Potter quiz we wrote for him. Dinner was potatoes & spaghetti. Gradually, the others returned and we sat talking about Harry Potter and star signs. We went inside and Harvey eventually put Shrek on, but 5 minutes in I fell asleep.
Tomorrow, we open the playground. Tomorrow is what this has been building up to for the past two weeks.
Day 27: Wednesday 10th September, 2014.
This morning I woke up around 6:30, and then it was about 6:45 when I got up. We had bread and jam for breakfast. After getting ready, we headed down to the playground for the penultimate day of building. I was in charge of painting the signs, so spent a fair amount of time mixing paints and working out spacing. I then headed over to the recliners to help Tori paint the stripes on the zebras. We were discussing music and concerts! I then did some shovelling with Chris, Lois & Abs, but went back to paint over the signs, and then helped to decorate the insides of the various shops. We had a fruit break as the children were coming out of class, and there were SO MANY of them.
The children beginning to appear!
Stacey & I on the complex!
They just stood crowding around us watching us paint. After fruit break, we went back down and had a quick go on the playground. We were racing along and over the tyre wall â Jamiul was the ultimate champion.
Racing over the tyre wall!
We went on the swings and then all the builders jumped into the matartu with me driving & I pretended to drive them to Jinja, Kampala & Entebbe.
Driving the matartu!
We did more painting inside the shops, and I wrote out the menu for the restaurant, asking Abs for the prices. I painted a naff car in the garage and most of the others were shovelling mud back by the recliners. Everyoneâs motivation dried up as it was nearly lunchtime â picking up stones wasnât really top of our priority list. For lunch I had pasta salad! We waited around to find out what was happening with Arts & Play, and got invited into a classroom to help some of the children from P7 to revise. Ivan wrote some science questions on the board about dehydration, cells, home cleanliness & volume. Rachel got the cell one wrong! We then got asked questions on Geography (SST) about latitudes, the British flag, longest river and the continent thatâs known as the Cradle of Life. It was English after that â asking us to reorganise sentences and write opposites. We got them mostly right⌠They then wanted us to write them some questions. I wrote maths onces and Rachel wrote science questions. I asked about Pythagoras, area of a triangle, adding indices and basic arithmetic. I was so pleasantly surprised with how much ease Ivan answered them with.
The children answering our questions!
Faisal then came in and started talking to the kids. He was talking about maths riddles and all sorts with them. Salim came in the classroom too. We went back outside and then Edward showed us the âlibraryâ.
The library!
The back wall was full of books and the rest of the room was filled with sewing machines and a few laptops. We went back outside to join Faisal and the kids of P7 for Arts & Play. The Arts group made butterflies out of paper and hand prints. We gathered by the church steps and got ambushed by hundreds of children wanting to play. Harvey brought the bubbles down and they went absolutely crazy!
The children absolutely adored the bubbles!
Eventually, Faisal came down and we played a game where everyone chants and one person in the middle summons everyone in and out again. We ended up playing a big game of ladders â I was paired with Jamiul & beat him the first time our number was called! :p Some of them got a bit confused and were running in all directions, but they absolutely loved it! It was spitting a bit, and we all had to put our EAP t-shirts on and have a group photo. We took a few more photos â I gave Bolt and Rachel piggybacks, and then Faisal gave me one up and down the complex. We then got to work on the mural and writing âBuwenda Primary Schoolâ. After many discussions, I ended up sketching the outlines and everyone else coloured it in. I was SO PROUD of the EAP logo!
The Mural!
We painted out names and handprints on the wall and it looks so awesome! People printed their hands on the backs of their EAP t-shirts. We all came back up for dinner after attempts at cleaning our hands. I had spaghetti, mash & tomato sauce. Tori & Jame returned from town, bringing us all back our favourite sodas; it was the best thing! We then all gathered in one of the classrooms (eventually â Aimee had a bit of an accident in the 2nd toiletâŚ). We all had a sheet of paper with our name written on the top & we passed them round, writing something lovely about everyone. It was so good to do, and despite their protests at the start, even the boys managed to write some super heartfelt messages. It was so lovely to see, and to read over them all at the end. A few people got a bit emotional! We played a few games of s***head with Rachel, Jamiul, Lois & then James & Chirs. We then had a game of Mafia with everyone except Fiona, Beth & Tori. Aimee, Chloe & Sam were Mafia, James & Jamiul detectives and Stacey was doctor. They killed Lois and kicked me out fist, detected Rachel wasnât Mafia and then it was super obvious who the mafia were. We sat chatting for a bit, and then went to bed.
Day 26: Tuesday 9th September, 2014.
This morning we got up slightly later than usual and had chipati and jam for breakfast. We all got ready and caught bodas into Jinja! We met at The Source and I quickly checked Facebook and updated everyone with what Iâd been up to. Fiona & I went for a trip to the bank, and met Rachel back in The Source. I bought fridge magnets, a stack of note paper and a badge for my camp blanket! We wandered up the High Street, popped into the supermarket to buy some water and then continued on until we reached the market.
The Market.
The Market.
We wandered through looking at all the different streets and found a place that sells hats. Fiona and Rachel bought 2 of them each and we just laugh at Rachel when she wears them (tee hee).
Rachel in one of her hats!
Eventually, we found our way out and walked back down the street to The Source. Rachel & I got fruit salads and chocolate chip cookies, and I had a fruit smoothie too. We then wandered back down to Flavours so we could have a look at the stalls further down the road. The first few stalls we looked at were really lovely. I bought a blue bag with elephants on, a bracelet for Simon, and a bowl/ornament thing for Dad & Julie. We walked all the way up the main street up to the supermarket, where I bought another bottle of water. Rachel bought 5 different pairs of trousers, I bought a bag for Mum and we got bracelets for James & Vincent. We caught bodas back to project after that, and did some washing in our rooms. The children were all back at school, so there were kids absolutely everywhere! I sat writing this and we waited for the others to get back from the pool. I had roast potatoes, rice, & tomato sauce for dinner and it was lovely. We went and sat in the room â I wrote this and then Rachel & I learnt all the capital cities of Europe. Harvey put âMeet the Robinsonsâ on, but I fell asleep.
My Bungee Jump over the River Nile! :D
Day 25: Monday 8th September, 2014.
I woke up to everyoneâs alarms at 7:45 and ran to the shower. When I got back, I thought everyone would be up, but they were all still in bed! I found Fiona in the bar and ordered some fruit salad and yoghurt for breakfast. I sat with Tori writing our holiday diaries and then packed my bag for leaving. Caroline (the police woman) came to interview Chris and Fiona about the things that they had stolen on Satuday night. Laura Dove came over to be interviewed too, and we told Aimee, Chloe, Harvey & Stacey to come ASAP, but they arrived just as we were all catching bodas to Adrift. James signed us in at reception, and we waited outside for everyone else. We all headed to the hut/bar/balcony and paid our money to bungee! We then all had to get weighed and all had our weights in kg written on our hands. We decided on the running (or jumping) order â Lois was first, and then Fiona, and I was third. We left Chloe, Tori & Beth in charge of taking photos and videos, and James came to the top with us. We left our shoes at the bottom and walked up so many stairs to reach the top. It felt okay for now â the fear hadnât really set in. They put harnesses on those of us near the front of the queue and then Lois had to have her feet tied together. It was then a matter of hobbling to the edge and preparing to jump. The guy gave us a talk about how to jump (or fall), and then it began. Lois had to be pushed off, and she got dunked in the water. She sent up encouraging messages to let us know it was good fun! Fiona was next and she scared us all by accidentally jumping feet first! She didnât reach the water, and then somehow managed to cling on to the bungee rope so we all had to yell at her to let go. It was then my turn. I got my feet tied up and jumped to the edge. Fear set in as my toes touched the edge of the platform.
Being cheered on!
They counted me down and I panicked & didnât jump. On the second, I started to fall and then stopped myself. On the third countdown, the guy pushed me off the edge and I dived right down. The initial moment was terrifying, but it felt incredible after that! Once I knew I was headed down towards the river, I was fine!
Bungee jumping!
The rope caught me just short of the river and threw me right back into the air again. The bouncing felt like it continued for ages, and then the guys in the boat below offered me the paddle to grab on to. He lowered me down into the boat and was chatting away right until I had to climb out and on to the steps. I wanted to hurry round so I could see Staceyâs jump, but as I was running round, I heard her go. The path back round took AGES to get back again â there were so many steps, corners, twists and turns! Sam was jumping after Stacey, and Beth got a super photo of her. I rang home after watching Aimeeâs jump and told Mum all about what had been happening! Jamiul was next to jump, and then it was Chris. He went so quickly the cameras almost missed him! Rachel was the last to go and she dived off the platform as if it was something she did every day. We all celebrated our achievements looking at the photos and videos. They showed us all the professional photos & James negotiated so we could get all the photos on a memory card for $50 each! It took a while to transfer all the photos on to the memory card, so the others went ahead leaving me, Rachel, Chris, Stacey, Lois, James & Sam to finish off there. We then headed down to the pool to meet the others who were all sunbathing. We sat down at a table and ordered drinks â I had a Sprite! We ordered food and sat chatting away. I looked through all of Chrisâ photos too. Sam & I put our cameras on charge in reception too. I had an African Kuku pizza for lunch. We headed out and caught bodas back to project to dump our bags. The bodas waited for us, and then we got taken to the sailing club for our boating trip. The sailing club was absolutely beautiful and super luxurious.
The Nile!
We all signed our lives away (again) and waited for the kayaks to arrive. I was at the front of a boat with Rachel, Tori & Stacey were together, as were Beth & Jamiul, Chris & Lois, Chloe & Aimee, Sam & James, and Fiona was left with Harvey. Our guides were Jamie, Abra & Shaggy. We were all paddling around trying to get to grips with the best way to paddle. We started singing but were told to be quiet because of the birds. A while on to the lake, we stopped and the guide told us more facts about the Nile & Lake Victoria. We had to name the countries in runs though â Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan, Republic of the Congo and Egypt. It took use ages to get them all because Abra wasnât acknowledging our answers! He stopped us and let us have some drinks. For some reason he put Harvey in charge of the gin! We paddled around a bit more, stopping every now and again so Abra could tell us more facts about Lake Victoria, and the Nile. It was really interesting when we could hear what he was saying! Most people were a bit drunk by now, so their attention spans were zilch. We then paddled down towards The Source of the Nile, having a little sing-a-long on the way! We paddled towards the official sign and touched it with our paddles! We then headed down the Nile for a while. We were trying to listen to all the interesting things Abra and Jamie were saying â although Harvey, Chloe & Aimee were really messing about! At one point we had a sing-a-long with Shaggy singing âIt Wasnât Meâ! We watched the moon and it was moving with such speed â it looked incredible! We headed to the bar gradually â each being taken up by one of the guides. We walked up loads of steps and curvy paths until we reached a bar. The truck with all our stuff in was waiting just the other side of the bar. We found some toilets to get changed in and joined back with everyone in the bar. I headed down to the downstairs bar with Fiona, finding a really awesome tree on the way.
The awesome tree!
We found this waitress on the way & she showed us to our table and took our drinks order. The others all joined us shortly & another woman came to take our food orders. I had a margherita pizza, but I could only eat half of it, so James and Sam finished it off. There were two adorable dogs running around too. We sat chatting and were absolutely shattered. Eventually, they ordered us a matartu and we all headed back here. It was so loud and cramped as all 14 of us had to fit in the back of it. Harvey also forgot his bag so had to run back and get it. Once back, we went straight to bed!
Day 24: Sunday 7th September, 2014 - Part II.
We continued on and soon reached the fifth rapid. Everyone was debating whether we should tip the boat or not, and concluded that we would try to stay in the boat for as long as possible.
Watch out for the wave...
It really wasnât much help though â the first wave of 3 tipped the boat upside down and we were all in the water.
And into the water we fell...
It felt like I was under water for so long, and my brain was just reminding myself that that was exactly how we were told we would feel. When I finally surfaces, I gasped for breath, only to be crashed down on by another waves! It felt never-ending â this cycle of not being able to breathe and just swallowing a ton of water. Eventually, one of the kayak guys (well, he was on more of a bodyboard thing) found me and got me to grab his paddle, hand and then boat. I felt awful, my breathing was all over the place and the guy said to me âThought you were going to die?â He spotted our boat up ahead and asked me if it was the right one. My brain took a while to register what the answer was! James, Lois, Rachel & I were all on the boat & didnât have a clue where Chris & Sam were, until they waved at us from another raft! Soon enough, they were safely back on the boat and we were headed towards the next set of rapids. This was another Grade 4 rapid and luckily we all managed to stay in the boat â apart from Chris! We just hit one of the waves and he flew backwards (like a scubadiver) off the boat. He reappeared a second later clinging on to the side of the boat, and as we continued down the rapids, his head kept bobbing up and down. Near to the bottom, we had to pull him back inside the boat and then continued on.
Only just noticed this is capturing Chris falling out...
The seventh rapid was just around the corner and called âHair of the Dogâ! I thought we were going to flip at one point, but we actually managed to stay in, and then paddled down a different side of a rock to pick up a paddle from a capsized boat. We watched all the others and then I spotted Beth floating away with a kayak a long way from the actual rapids. I was rather concerned for a while because I couldnât see Tori anywhere! It turned out sheâd been picked up by another boat though, so all way okay. It was another 20/25 minutes of paddling until we reached the final rapid. The one was 3 different waves all named after beers of Uganda â The Nile Special, Club & another one. In order to go the âcraziestâ route, we skipped the Nile Special so we could attempt to tackle the others. We were doing quite well, and then this massive wave came and knocked the boat 90° upright. Rachel fell on me as we went underwater, Sam fell on Lois & Chris disappeared under too. The boat then whacked us on the back of the head and we all flailed through the water gasping for breath above the crashing waves.
Falling out!
It wasnât nearly as bad as the other one, and once we were past the worst, I spotted Sam floating nearby and we checked that we were both okay. We floated on down the river, and I found a paddle to cling on to. As we were drifting, we saw James float past STILL IN THE BOAT! By some total miracle, heâd managed to stay in by himself â the photos are epic! We swam by the boat for a while, which was really lovely. The others eventually found us and we paddled to the end of the trip. We all climbed out and carried the boat above our heads to nearby the truck. We picked up our things and had a group photo with Yusuf.
White water rafting crew!
It was only his second day on the job, and he said he couldnât swim! He said he usually does the photography. We headed up to the showers and I was in a broken one that would not stop leaking. It was so awkward manoeuvring around the water whilst trying to get dry. Once I was changed, I went outside for the buffet. I had a bottle of Coke, bread, half a baked potato, rice and the nicest beef Iâve had for AGES. Rachel had a bad headache and we sat chatting away until it was our turn to look at the professional photos. They were so epic! We all climbed on the truck and headed back to NRC. We stopped for a loo break on the way, and a one point a stone or something flew up from the road and hit me right in the throat! It was SO sore! We got back after around 1h45, and found the others at the entrance so said hello to them. After a while, Yusuf showed us all the photos again and we paid for them to put them on discs for us. Rachel went to bed, and I went to the bar with Fiona and we beat Chris & Lois at a game of pool! I beat Fiona at one point too. We ordered food â I had a beef burger and chips, and they messed up Rachelâs veggie burger. We were all so shattered after such a long day that we headed to bed.
