Another thing

I recently did an askbox meme that involved writing drabbles, and it was nice fun so I’ve been considering writing drabbles featuring DR4 cast members interacting with the DR1+2 cast, mainly for funsies but also as a way to advertise. (Thus why only 1+2, since those are the iterations of DR that people are likeliest to know.) That’s still a good 16 characters, though, and even at 100-200 words a pop, that can take a while.

...But if there are any other match-ups anyone thinks would be interesting, feel free to suggest them! (I know it’s a travesty that my girl Kyoko isn’t on this list, but this list was drawn up in the interests of cast balance plus who would have the most interesting interactions with whom, and she sadly didn’t make the cut.)

So I’m curious: are there any particular pair-ups, either listed here or not, that readers would want to see? Would you want to see any, or would you rather we focus on writing/editing the main storyline?

Progress update

It’s been a while, so it’s time for an update! As of the end of May, DR4 is complete up to the end of Chapter 5, including all side materials like Free Time Events. The only things left to write are Chapter 6 and the Epilogue, and it’s pretty exciting that we’ve gotten this far.

So since we only have those things left, @snittyandboring and I will be taking the time to go back and do all our editing now. Why not wait until the whole thing is done? Basically, because we’ve had a lot of ideas that requires changes, and also because it’s been a REALLY long time since we even touched early materials, and we figure it’s a good idea to refresh ourselves on the beginning before working on the end. This way we can make sure we remember everything of the plot and foreshadowing and what-have-you before we bring it all together.

Previously, we were talking about posting sometime in April. Now we’re thinking it’ll probably be in August. We’re planning on June/July for the editing process, then returning to the main story starting August, therefore once we start posting, we’ll be somewhere in Chapter 6 in the writing process. At this point, it’s almost certain we’ll finish this behemoth of a story, but endings are always tricky beasts, and that goes double for Danganronpa.

Incidentally, you might be wondering just how much of a behemoth this fic is! Snitty calculated the word counts of everything written so far, and counting all the side materials, minus some self-indulgent things we wrote for funsies that won’t be appearing, DR4 is currently approximately 650,000 words long. Yow!

Shinto: “I know Emiri can seem a bit off-putting at first, but she’s actually really nice... if a bit strict.”

Chizu: “Someday, I swear, I’m going to steal that creepy haunted ventriloquist doll from Hinayo and SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER!!”

Hirohito: “What? Emiri? Who? OH YES, Hinayo’s doll. What about it?”

Daichi: “I suppose it’s a harmless enough quirk, if childish. We Ultimates do tend towards the unusual.”

Kirara: “How exquisite! To think Hinayo made her when she was only four--no wonder she loves her so much!”

Otome: “There are stranger things in this world. If Hinayo believes she’s real, then let her be real.”

Mayoi: “Emiri is such a sweetheart--and what splendid manners! Don’t worry, Hinayo; I know she’s real!”

Hinayo: “Emiri’s m-m-my best friend! She’s always been b-by m-m-m-my side! I know I can t-trust her with anything!”

Monokuma: “Good thing everyone hates creepy dolls, or we’d be in for a mascot war. And I’d win, of course--just ask Monomi!!”

So I'm playing DRv3, and starting Chapter 4 I decide to swap from the English language track and play in Japanese. "Oh, Keebo's voiced by Souichirou Hoshi," I tell myself, mishearing his voice, "that's funny, that means he's the Persona 5 protag in English and Akechi in Japanese!" Except, whoops, that isn't Hoshi; it's Tetsuya Kakihara. As in the guy we had fan-cast as Shu. Whoops...

Long story short, we decided to re-fan-cast Shu, and who better than as the guy I mistook Kakihara for? Shu's preferred seiyuu is now Souichirou Hoshi, example role Keiichi Maebara from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

Fun facts: we almost ended up with a couple of other doubled-up seiyuu, too. Maaya Sakamoto, who plays Maki Harukawa, was one of the potential picks for Namie, and Ryouhei Kimura, who plays Kaito Momota, was a potential for Shinto.

Asuka: “She’s so cute--she looks just like a doll! Especially with the doll double she carries.”

Shinto: “She’s a good kid. I wish we could be friends without feeling like I have to pick between her and Chizu, though.”

Chizu: “UGH. Just--could she just go away already? She’s so annoying!”

Hirohito: “The consummate summoner!! And a smart match for Yuzuru, at that!”

Namie: “Her devotion to her friends is wonderful.”

Yoh: “I’m impressed by her dedication to her aesthetic.”

Otome: “She seems quiet at first, but she’s actually quite passionate. I adore that about her.”

Shu: “My hypnosis sessions with Mayoi in high school helped me survive my anxiety. I’ll always be grateful to her for that.”

Daichi: “Ugh, what a nuisance. I could tolerate her new-age garbage better if she weren’t always so desperate.”

Kirara: “I know she comes on strong, but she’s really just playing around. You can tell because of her long nails.”

Otome: “I can confide in her about anything. But sometimes... no, never mind.”

Otome: “We don’t speak much. I think I may make him nervous.”

Mayoi: “Those fainting spells of his are so relatable... I-I mean! Ohohohohohoho!!”

Hinayo: “H-he’s a nice f-friend. I like c-cooking with him a l-lot!”

Emiri: “Although he may lose himself while baking, he does not ever lose himself to arrogance. A fine young man.”

Story Progress

Main scenario writer Ayu here! DR4 is written up through the end of Chapter 5 Daily Life. It needs a bunch more editing, since a large chunk of that was written during NaNoWriMo last month, but that'll come with time. All that's left of the main scenario is the Chapter 5 Deadly Life, Chapter 6, and the Epilogue. We're closing in on the first anniversary since we started writing DR4--12/13/16 was when I finished the first chapter of the Prologue--and it's amazing to look back on how much progress we've made in one year.

I'm really hoping we can start posting in April. If the main scenario isn't done by then, then it should at least be well into Chapter 6, and I think that's sufficient for making sure the story agrees with itself when we do edits. My original plan was to start posting sometime circa Chapter 5 or 6 anyway... Waiting until the whole thing is done is probably a liiiiittle excessive, even if it's probably the smart thing to do.

Still, if I've gotten this much of the main scenario done, I'm pretty sure finishing is only a matter of time. I'm looking forward to moving on to other projects once that happens... but I probably won't be truly done with DR4 until it's all posted. Given that we're currently on chapter 60-something, and I estimate the main story will clock in at about 80 chapters, that'll probably take a whiiiiile...
