endless list of dramas: Her Private Life (2019)
Art may be great, but it can’t be greater than a living human being. Regardless of how insignificant I may seem, I’m still greater than those condescending paintings that are hung on the wall. Because I’m a living being, and I will continue to live.

Aaaaand I’m back!
Hi all,
I’ve been neglecting this blog in favor of my main tumblr (where I reblog+post about Western shows, anime, books, etc), but kdramas have taken over my life again. I haven’t watched anything from 2013-15 except an odd show here and there (like Secret Love Affair and Lovers). It’s 2016 and suddenly I’m DEEP in it again. I’ve tried a few shows like Oh My Venus and Come Back Ahjusshi, but it’s actually a re-watch of My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Queen In Hyun’s Man (TWO FAVORITES) that managed to bring me back. I’ve been following W:Two Worlds obsessively and I’ve caught up with a lot of shows I missed in the past few years like Healer (LOVE), My Love From Another Star (LOVE!! SO MUCH FRIGGIN LOVE I actually marathoned this in 2 days, no sleep, no regrets), Trot Lovers (meh, but worth it for Ji Hyun Woo & Jung Eun Ji), The Moon That Embraces the Sun (Kim Soo Hyun made me watch a sageuk?!!). I’m also planning on catching up with other shows like Pinocchio, Misaeng, and Discovery of Love. If you have recommendations for iconic or awesome kdramas I missed and that aired in last 3 years, please throw them at me? <3
I’m also planning to start watching Moonlight Drawn by Clouds (cross-dressing, YES PLEASE), but I need it to finish airing first or at least have more episodes because I JUST know I’ll want to binge. Also, Scarlet Heart: Ryeo <3 Oh, super stoked for K2 with Ji Chang Wook & Yoona.
I’ll try to be more active here. I have so many thoughts on all the dramas I watched (esp. W and My Love From Another Star, romantic kdramas with supernatural twists are my favorite) so META and LOTS OF WORDS coming. Hope everyone’s having a lovely day! <3
[W: Two Worlds Episode 8]
Yeah, the network did a real disservice to the narrative flow of episodes 7 & 8 by airing them a week apart. I think if I’d had this right after 7, i would have been less irritated at the fragility and superficial relationship between Yeon-Joo and Chul that was getting crammed down my throat.
My biggest complaint lately, has been that W is very plot heavy and too light on character development. I didn’t believe in their budding love at all because there had been no consequences to build it. The biggest example of that, for me, is the lack of fallout from Chul shooting Yeon-Joo. I feel like we needed more than what we’ve got to believe that Yeon-Joo was willing to save his life and throw herself into a comic book world.
I think the plot is too big to squish into sixteen episodes. It should’ve been twenty-four.
But this episode was so very lovely. It didn’t fix the plot heavy telling, but goodness did I say Holy Shit a lot. I’d been struggling with Chul’s empathy because so much of his screentime was spent with Yeon-Joo but him rushing to So-Hee’s side after he realized what was going on made me believe that he does care about her.
(I think this is the first kdrama I’ve ever seen where I would be okay if the second female lead and male lead hooked up. Their relationship feels more real to me in the mere minutes of screen time we’ve gotten than all of the cutesy stuff that happened in episode 7.)
And I like that Chul pointed out how cruel it is to only live for one thing and that he acknowledged that So-Hee got the worst of it. Then he sacrificed his freedom to protect So-Hee (and others) from disappearing and I lost it. I might be able to root for him to get a happy ending now even if I don’t know what that means.
I really like the touch that the Man in Black wants to know who he is. I also want to see more of the Editor. Because we still don’t know how or why this happened.
And I’m really excited how the two worlds are going to merge ala 3D technology like in the logo. Really, I just want So-Hee to stop existing for Chul. I want her life to be hers. In a different way, I want Yeon-Joo to let go of Chul. It’s like he said at the prison, he does not exist to be her fantasy, and after probably close to fifteen years, she should give it up.
But if the next chapter is starting from scratch, as equals, meaning no gun for Chul and no pen for Yeon-Joo, that is something I’m interested in.
OMG I AGREE SO MUCH WITH THIS! I thought I was the only person unnerved by last week’s episode (7) and the crazy tonal shift from existential crisis on Chul’s part to an adorable romcom between Chul and Yeon Joo.
The problem, I think, is really not how fast they get together, but rather a lack of proper build-up and connection between them. Consider Queen In Hyun’s Man from Song Jae Jun, the same writer who’s doing W, the leads kiss very early on in QIHM and their relationship develops lightning fast; however it feels natural, the connection builds gradually with every meeting, every conversation they exchange, every joke they share, every smile. Of course it helps that the leads had INSANE chemistry in that drama. Maybe W falls short because the sparks between the actors are not as strong or maybe it’s because W is slightly more ambitious/trying to fit more plot and there are less quite moments between the couple. Chul and Yeon Joo go from shooting each other to kissing VERY quickly, and don’t get me wrong I have no problems with that kind of premise in theory if it’s executed well. But I don’t think it is. It’s slightly too rushed here, too jarring.
Also, like the OP here, I’m too weirded out by the wish-fulfillment aspect of their relationship to enjoy it properly. The insidious, wildly unrealistic sentiment of ”if I just wish hard enough, my ideal man is going to appear out of thin air!” is strongly re-enforced by this drama; Yeon Joo LITERALLY created Chul from the image of her ideal man and now she gets to date him. I know, I know, and everyone knows this is fiction and no one is actually sitting there waiting for their ideal man (or woman) drop into their lap (or are they? seriously, how many crazy expectations do young people have about love and people in general?) Also, I know that MOST k-dramas are wish-fullfilment fantasies anyway and that they’re not mean to be realistic, but I really think W has gone a step too far when the the main character is heroine’s breathing creation who needs to assert his own free will, independent of her…
So yeah, not that sold on the romance front yet. Feel extremely bad for Soo Hee (have a little perspective? imagine the main heroine of a drama/manga/anime/whatever thing you are watching is suddenly thrown aside in favor of some random girl who just drops from the sky, EVERYONE WOULD BE PISSED).
Will still be watching because I’m enjoying the premise and the plot twists too much. Also have faith in Song Jae Jun to pull this off in the end and make me root of Chul/Yeon Joo couple.
I can’t believe it’s been nine episodes and they still haven’t talked about the fact that he shot both her AND her dad!
And I can’t believe that the narrative isn’t really framing it as the evil thing it is. And in ep 9 Kang Chul legit said “I’m not going to apologize” showing that he obviously has no remorse about it. He has no remorse about almost taking a life. He has no remorse or just doesn’t care about the pain it caused Yun Joo to see her father with a gunshot wound in his chest bleeding out and on the brink of death.
That’s why I couldn’t get into the romance in eps 7 and 8. Yes, they were cute and adorable and had a lot of chemistry, but it’s like they were just cosplaying at coupledom and weren’t actually one; and nothing screamed that more than when they were just following directions from a book on what to do.
I’m hoping that the romance in those two eps was supposed to feel “off.” Song Jae Jung is capable of writing a riveting, believable romance (as seen in QIHM) so I’m hoping that there’s more of a focus on that in the upcoming episodes because at this point it doesn’t seem believable that they care about each other as much as the drama says they do. And I know it’s not fair to continuously compare this drama to QIHM, but there are so many parallel’s it’s difficult not to. In both dramas the lovers are separated by outside forces into two different worlds. But in QIHM, when BoongDo was brought back to the past and unable to return, it was heart wrenching and legit made me cry. While in W, when they were separated for most of ep 9, I was just like “oh ok.”
Not to say that I’m not enjoying this drama because I totally am, but the romance continues to be the weakest link and I’m hoping that gets fixed asap.
I totally get the QIHM comparisons though! Watching W made me miss QIHM so I re-watched it. Wow, what a gem, even on a re-watch. I fell in love with the couple all over again, laughed, smiled, and then cried buckets of tears (despite knowing the ending already). It was such a powerhouse of insane chemistry and acting (brought out in them by the director & the script I’m assuming because I’ve not seen either Yoo In Na or Ji Hyun Woo be as good anywhere else as they were in QIHM) and it just HIT all the perfect notes in terms of romance and romance angst. I really wanted W to be on that level for me, but *sigh* it isn’t not yet and I totally agree with your criticisms of the drama.

“The mists were so thick that only the nearest trees were visible; beyond them stood tall shadows and faint lights. Candles flickered beside the wandering path and back amongst the trees, pale fireflies floating in a warm grey soup. It felt like some strange underworld, some timeless place between the worlds, where the damned wandered mournfully for a time before finding their way down to whatever hell their sins had earned them.”
I am going to conquer the Seven Kingdoms just so I can tear Sansa from the vile clutches of D&D.
