Remember The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock? The movie showed how a kid who had an extremely rough upbringing got help from the family of a school friend, found success in football and ultimately ended up being adopted by the family. Turns out he was never adopted.

Michael Oher says that he was tricked by the Tuohy family into signing documents that made them his conservators. Since he was already 18 at the time the family told him, “that it means pretty much the exact same thing as 'adoptive parents,' but that the laws were just written in a way that took [his] age into account.”

Oher also says that papers were signed so that his story and likeness were given away for free to use in The Blind Side. He also never got a single royalty check for the hugely successful, Oscar nominated film in the 14 years since its release.

Many people in the comments are saying “trauma”, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. It’s called Childhood Amnesia, and it’s a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to “trick” your brain into remembering with different tactics.

This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It can’t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.

This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is “stored in the body”, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories won’t generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

My rant on the injustice black people have faced.

watching documentaries about the civil rights movement makes me so angry and overwhelmed with emotions. it really shows you how evil white people were/are/can be. and they fought back so hard for us to not get basic citizen rights, rights so minuscule that they never fathomed life without, and they put their very all into not allowing us a taste of it. we were literal slaves, like the equivalent of cattle, less than dogs. we were robbed of our culture and history and familial ties, we will probably never get to know what it would have been like if we were able to stay in Africa, and if we were never stolen. and the moment we get "freedom" its not even at our expense, its to fight for the very same people who enslaved them. and even if we had no choice to do so, we adopted the patriotism they also shared and it still. didn't. matter. people were literally murdered in the name of keeping black people from sitting near a white person. we couldn't walk down the side of a street without fear of losing our lives. and it hasn't ended. they proved that in ferguson, and in charleston. we aren't free, and they don't believe our lives matter and for people to just say get over it, it will pass, you got a black president, what more can you want, that shit pisses me off to the max. this is why i get so riled up when yall say "cultural appropeiation isn't real" because we as a people worked too damn hard to have something to get it ripped from our hands and slapped upside the head for questioning why. and we worked too damn hard for the future generations to just say its different now, because it isn't different, its not over and we have to do something about it.
