Ahh, it’s back

rough drafting it here but i think Batman has a special connection to the concept of child sidekicks in a way that defies modern feelings about child soldiers because he was the child who lost everything and felt he needed to make a change in the world but was denied the agency and choice to do anything. child Bruce would have fit right in with any of the Robins if he'd had a Batman and it's the fact that he didn't that ultimately drives him to extend the choice he never got. it was never about soldiers or "refusing to protect the children from themselves," it is, within the acceptable morality of the genre, respecting a child's personhood and ability to make decisions for themselves and giving them opportunities their adult never had. it's why you can't take the Robins away from Batman without significantly changing the character, because Batman was born from child Bruce's most heartfelt wish to be able to DO something about all the injustice in the world and so to deny other children that is to deny himself

We need to bring back fandom etiquette and shaming in a big way. Particularly as a gifmaker, I am so puzzled as to why people comment on, reblog and/or leave tags on gifs of a character or ship or show etc they don't like. What in your mind makes you think the person who made those gifs wants to see your negative tags? Genuinely asking. Back in my day people scrolled past or muted or blocked and realised not everyone wants to read their opinions on something they likely view positively since they took the time and energy to make gifs for them (gifs that will get -100 reblogs on a good day, mind you). Or you can just...make your own post about it if you have something to complain about.

Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.

Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.

There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.

i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.

I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case
