I didn't believe it when I first saw the post. I just watched the Hip Hop Nutcracker on Disney+ and he and his wife on the JHud Show. SYTYCD was one of my favorite shows; I've seen nearly every episode. Two of my favorite performances are The Door and The Bed. Death by #suicide affects all demographics. It is not respective of age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or religious and spiritual beliefs. Yes, some communities have a higher reported rate than others but the loss of even one is too many. As a person who has lived with depression and attempted suicide before, I urge anyone who is having suicidal thoughts, feeling hopeless, or wishes the world would just pause long enough so you can catch your breath, please reach out for help. #988 is the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Drug Trend Update. Below are clips from a Andrew Joseph article I read in STAT. ... A veterinary tranquilizer, xylazine, or “tranq,” exploded in recent years to the point that in 2021, it was found in more than 90% of heroin and fentanyl samples. With its ascendance has come a wave of wounds — sometimes called abscesses, lesions, or, in the words of one volunteer nurse here, something that looks like “it’s eating away your flesh from the inside out.” ... These are not the same type of wounds that sometimes occur from injecting drugs generally. For one, they are sprouting on skin far from where people inject; there are reports that even people who snort or smoke xylazine-contaminated opioids — what’s called tranq dope — are developing these wounds. While they’re not caused by an infection, the wounds can get infected if they’re not taken care of. ... xylazine is changing what recovering from overdose looks like. Someone who overdoses on tranq dope might start to breathe again after being given naloxone — which only works for opioids — but will still be passed out from the sedative. Counseling Made Easy: A couple of sheets of paper and something to write with. That's all. Write down 1 thing that's brings you #stress on each strip of paper. Arrange the strips from least stressful to most stressful. Pick up the ones that you can easily let go of and not worry about. Get rid of them - shred them, throw away, whatever you want to safely do. Sort the remaining strips into the categories - ready to talk about, scared to talk about but need to, not ready to talk about yet. Are there any patterns within or between groups? Which pile do you feel comfortable to talk about right now? What would make you ready to talk about the other two? My sometimes coworkers after a long day of stormy weather, sketchy internet, and stress. 1. The big is scared of high winds. Today she scampered to the farthest corner of the room to get away. While I knew she was safe and tried to reassure her, my words were not enough. Our sympathetic nervous system tells us we are in danger and how to react. Sometimes it is activated when there is no true threat, but maybe the environment triggers a memory of a threat and the brain and body react accordingly. 2. Eventually she hid under my desk while I worked as a way of getting as close to feeling safe as she could. Later, the three of us cuddled in a chair. She was still anxious but she wasn't alone. During stressful moments our brain is constantly seeking safety and a return to balance. If it can't find the safety it wants, the brain will try to make do with what's available; its job is to keep us alive and happy. 3. The little was the bodyguard watching the environment, ready to attack whatever was scaring her sister. Secondary stress is when the situation that someone else is going through triggers a stress response in us. Maybe we've gone through something similar or maybe we don't like seeing someone we care about under duress. To the brain the stress is real. 4. After the storm finally passed, they slept. Their brains and bodies exhausted from being stressed all day. After the stressor is gone, and our brains and bodies are able to recognize that we are not in danger, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated and brings our bodily systems back to homeostasis. Likw a child after a tantrum, what we experienced was taxing and we often need to rest. Our heart rate and breathing decrease, our muscles relax, even our digestion system "restarts" after being on pause. Now think about if this was your daily reality. Living a life full of adverse situations that trigger stress responses damages the brain and body. In light of recent school board events, I ask you to consider the relationship between environment and behavior. Disruptive behaviors, maladaptive behaviors, self-defeating behavior, and the rest are coping skills a person has that worked for them before in a different situation. When a person does not feel safe or a sense of belonging they will use the coping skills they have in order to gain a SEAT. No matter the outcome, all behaviors are enacted in order to meet at least one of these needs. Students may or may not know the politics involved in their daily school experience, but many of them can sense when their presence, values, and beliefs are not wanted, only tolerated, or ignored. For the first time since 2005, I am not starting the school year as a school counselor or mental health professional within a school. Someone asked me if I miss it. Honestly, no. I love what I'm doing now - preparing the next generation of school counselors and clinical mental health counselors & working in private practice. I still specialize in counseling teens and young adults with substance use and associated behaviors. I still provide parent coaching and support. I still provide consultation to school districts and organizations, and create curriculum and programming. My passion is still for those who others would rather avoid and ignore.
