shapes and stuff did take me a while to get comfortable with, so i definitely understand what you mean lol. but just for the record from the sprites you showed, the shapes arent bad at all!! but anyways, i'll separate this explanation so its a little easier to understand
lines: lines are obviously a huge part of making the shapes, and i try to use them in a few different ways. usually, i try to avoid having lines that are completely straight for too long, and when there's a curve, i'll make the curve smoother by having the lines gradually go smaller, like this:
but, sometimes this line doesn't really work so well, or maybe i want it to have a bit more dimension to it, in that case, something more like this
details: details can be a bit hard. for me personally it was because i wanted to have EVERY last detail included in the sprite, and unfortunately, the truth is that sometimes you have to leave a detail out, or make it much more subtle than intended. but! something else you can use to detail your sprites is, again, the lines. if you want a part to be a bit less obstructive in the sprite, you can use a different color for its lines, like an almost black one, to make it a bit less focal. it's like line weight, but with colors! to provide an example, say you have this sprite here
the bag isn't that much of a problem here because i didn't give them any more details, but if this was a fully developed sprite, then that probably wouldn't be the case. so to make it less prominent, the different colored outlines do a good job of it! or atleast thats what i do.
there is more to it, but i think this is already pretty long, and i'd like to finish it saying again that you're encouraged to do things in whichever way you prefer. no right or wrong way to draw!! sorry if this one is long again. let me know if there's more you want me to talk about!
