it's a day that ends in y, which means i am mad about dark mio once more. i swear every time i think about her i find some new shit. rant under the cut!
i've realized that my main thing about dark mio is it doesn't feel deserved. not killing her, that's a whole nother thing, but even her existence, as a boss in mio's subconscious. she doesn't feel properly foreshadowed or lead up to, it feels like they had this whole thing planned out for zoe and had to magic some shit at the last moment for mio.
mio does not feel like a person with the kind of anger issues dark mio represents. i'm not saying she needs to constantly be spitting mad and foaming at the mouth. i'm just saying it'd make more sense if she was shown to be struggling with these things. instead of saying 'i didn't realize you had this' it's more like 'i didn't realize things were this bad for you.'
and yes, to do that, mio will have to be a little unlikable. she will have to be cold and snippy and short and rude, because she's got a stranglehold on her emotions. she will have to have an outburst at zoe, an outburst that she immediately regrets, yes, but that tension between mio who has herself wrapped up and zoe who keeps digging and prying is GOOD.
the game shows us mio, a little snarky and reserved but overall chill, and then shows us dark mio, a D1 crashout who is flipping her shit and trying to murder people. i have anger issues, i have aspd/bpd, i have homicidal ideations and urges, i'm not saying dark mio is too intense at all, i'm saying that we gotta bring mio up a couple notches to meat it. make me believe that this really is her biggest inner demon.
(and maybe i just wanna see mio get so angry she cries sue me)
dark mio feels too foreign, too alien. it feels like the mio we know is an extremely radical personality shift, though obviously we cant see how she was before she locked dark mio away. (there's a plurality metaphor in here somewhere, but that's another post entirely.)
it's not very well framed as 'this is a part of mio' its just 'there's this bitch trying to murder mio and make her... turn evil?' not actually certain on what dark mio's goal is also.
and then the aftermath... it doesn't really feel like anything changes? obviously we don't know what happened after the timeskip, but what happens to the emotions dark mio represents? are they just... gone? because that's insane. do they flow back into mio, which would just restart the problem all over again?
dark mio is a coping mechanism. the 'evil copy' thing is a metaphor, and its kinda like they forgot and played it too straight? dark mio isn't literally a sexy evil cyborg trying to murder you, it's all that bottled up helpless pain left to stew. and we are stabbing that coping mechanism right in the chest i suppose.
if mio is having homicidal urges so bad she has to personify them and lock them in a max security prison... like josef fares just dropped that in my lap and expects me to be normal? lol. lmao.
