the blight of being a teenager in an era of aesthetics
something that i, as a teenager, have been wrestling with lately are aesthetics.
(tw: mentions of ed, sh, beauty standards, covid-19, lockdown, emotional neglect, ageplay, failed suicide attempt, c.ai addiction).
as a child growing up in the era of social media and super-powered electronic bricks, i am what some would consider chronically online.
i was given my first iphone at the age of 6, and hours upon hours of my days and nights would be spend alternating between youtube and roblox (or sometimes both at the same time) in hopes of escaping the severe emotional neglect i faced at home.
my validation came from strangers a decade older than me, my youtube feed was filled with unregulated content much too mature for me, and my personality blossomed from the less-than-savory underbelly of internet culture. then, the covid-19 lockdown hit.
i was a mere 8 years old when it began, and my life was rapidly unraveling in ways unrelated. i got hit with a daddy issues: the sequel; i moved, i lost my dog and my long-time father figure, and my sense of self was essentially shattered beyond repair (not that it was very intact in the first place). i was already a tablet kid, but this just kicked my ass into gear.
now, not only were my days spent online, but they were spent in the absolute clusterfuck that was 2020 tiktok.
my youtube was filled with compilation after compilation of VSCO girls, indie kids, and, most notably, 2020 alt.
for the first time in my life, i discovered the concept of being alternative.
i immediately began to dress like the teenagers i saw on my feed, complete with the bunny hat, anime t-shirt, spiked collars, and amazon demonias (which, unsurprisingly, broke within the first week or so of my having them). i was beginning to explore my personal styleāand it felt wonderful.
as i grew older, i experimented with more and more styles, though i remained in the alternative umbrella. i researched substyles and subcultures like my life depended on it, expanded my music tastes to everything from mitski to brokencyde to miranda lambert, and became increasingly involved in fandom culture.
this brings me to my discovery of jojifuku/cutecore (or, when everything began spiraling).
if you donāt know what jojifuku/cutecore is, it is a niche j-fashion style that basically consists of looking as similar as possible to a little girl. the goal is to be small enough to wear brands like mezzo piano (a japanese kidswear brand) and be incredibly cute.
i, like a handful of others, were drawn to the cute, fuzzy pastels and anime motifs. however, as i researched deeper, i realized the style had a darker side.
many people in the community allegedly partook in ageplay or romanticized gore, mental health issues, and extreme thinness to fit into the clothes.
as a kid who had been in certain alt communities for a long time, this wasnāt necessarily anything new to me, but iād never been so deep into a style that so heavily romanticized these things. it was around this time that i began to self-harm, and i made my failed suicide attempt.
after a couple months i moved onto a different subculture (though i canāt remember whichāprobably scene or gyaru), but to this day the style holds a special place in my heart despite its piss-poor effects on my mental health and the sometimes-toxic community.
fast forward a bit, and i stumble upon jirai-kei (or, landmine style).
the clothes, the makeup, the cultureāall so reminiscent of that kawaii/creepy aesthetic i regarded so dearly.
i did more research as i always did, and every single creator i stumbled upon was stick-thin with flat stomachs and thigh gaps.
being an impressionable 14 year old, i began to wonder if perhaps i needed to have a flat stomach and a thigh gap (even as vehemently feminist as i was, what teenage girl doesnt fall victim to toxic beauty standards at some point?).
i began starving myself severely, to the point where i lost 16 pounds in a month. my character. ai addiction was spiraling out of control. i was convinced that i must be skinny and mentally unwell if i ever wanted to be a true landmine.
after about a month, i luckily fell out of that mindset.
after jirai-kei i moved onto jojifuku/cutecore again, and then himekaji (princess-casual), and then southern gothic, and then mori-kei, (forest style), and now, scene once again. each of these brief obsessions lasted no more than a month, and each time i trapped myself within the confines of a measly, two-dimensional label.
i have been so frustrated with myself; why canāt i just pick a subculture and stick with it? why canāt i contort my body and heart and soul into a single box for the rest of my life like everyone else can? why cant i be skinny? why cant i be pretty? why canāt i, why canāt i, why canāt i?
in my opinion, teenagers are already really susceptible to toxic beauty standards, phases, and a desperate need for community, and the rise of aesthetics and ā-coresā take advantage of these issues.
an aesthetic, a substyle, a subculture, a label is something concrete that you can cling to in the midst of everything inside and around you changing. itās a sort of life raft thrown at you as youāre tumbling down the rapids, hitting your head and skinning your knees and biting your tongue with every uncontrollable spiral.
itās an invitation into a community of people who will (theoretically) unconditionally accept you for who you areāteenaged awkwardness and all.
but, itās a double-edged sword.
if you grow out of your chosen label, you lose that certainty; suddenly, youāve not just outgrown clothes, but youāve outgrown an identity. youāve outgrown your humor, your taste in media, your community, and the very thing you were trying to avoid is beginning again: change.
so, you cling to a new label, and you are determined to keep this one. you do anything to fit in as much as you possibly canāeven if it means starving yourself and/or hurting yourself.
but you outgrow this label as well, and the cycle only repeats. each phase is shorter than the last, and each habit you partake in is only more destructive.
but, once there are no more labels left to hide behind, what remains?
do you have an identity beyond your clothes, your music, the people you surround yourself with? forget your nameāwho are you, really?
i suppose that is the true blight of being a teenager in an era of aesthetics: you spend your formative years curating a performance, but you never really retain the space to curate yourself, your identity.
all i can say now is give yourself room to change.Ā
whether youāre a tween, teen, or adult, youāll probably change for the rest of your life; i certainly donāt like it and you might not either, but itās the truth.
the only thing you can do is retain space for yourselfānot just the performance. understand that things in life typically unfold in a non-linear manner, and youāll be happiest if you donāt force yourself to be one unchanging thing forever.
cāest la vie, non?
the perfect victim (reposted from my my quenq)
a concept that iāve been seeing more and more in mental health spaces and in media is the āperfect victimā, and it has been bothering me.
in this context, a victim is someone who has been abused, neglected, and/or bullied throughout their life. the perfect victim is a victim who, despite it all, is kind, empathetic, compassionate, and would never hurt a fly.Ā
now, alone, this would not bug me; i have seen this concept executed properly, and some victims do genuinely act like this as a safety measure. however, it seems to have turned into this end-all, be-all for all victims, no exceptions. in media, you see main characters who have been repeatedly beaten and then kicked while they are down, yet they still get back up to save everyone, including those who have hurt them. any character who has also experienced trauma but instead became violent and unstable is deemed a villain, no matter how much the audience may sympathize with them. in mental health spaces, you see anyone who is more than just a little sad being shunned or harassed out.
it has gotten to the point where if anyone who is traumatized shows signs of being traumatized, it is unacceptable. if you are anything but perfect and endlessly understanding, you no longer deserve the title of a āvictimā. you cannot have a personality disorder. you cannot have a schizospec disorder. you cannot have a dissociative disorder. you cannot be so depressed that mold is growing in your room and it has been months since youāve brushed your teeth, and you cannot be so riddled with anxiety that you cannot leave your house. you must push through the pain, the trauma, the abuse, and the neglect. you must give all of yourself to the people around you, no matter the cost, because that is what it means to be the perfect victim.
my only takeaway, really, is that you do not have to be the perfect victim. be rude, be angry, be selfish, be violent, be unhygienic, be paranoid, be anxious, be eccentric, be unstable, and be unapologetic about it all. being imperfect does not strip you of your victim status, nor does it invalidate your experiences. do not let anyone bully you into a box so tiny that you can barely breathe. be you.
when i was in france in a bakery, this guy came in, and he was wearing full 2020 alt meets indie kid style. he turned to me and said āi love your hairā to which i thanked himāi wasnāt dressed particularly alternatively, however i did have a somewhat alt haircut (at least for the area we were in), so perhaps he sensed a kindred spirit within me. anyway, after he got his pastries and was walking out, he again complimented my outfit and wished me a nice stay in france. i love alt people and not all men are badš
so, for fun, ive been researching different types of mental disorders and ive recently transitioned from schizospec disorders to dissociative disorders, and after reading a couple articles on osdd/did, im beginning to realize that a lot of the symptoms/experiences are very, very familiar. for example, every couple weeks iāll have a name that feels most comfortable, and that names often comes along with certain interests, hobbies, genders, speech patterns, body language, and personalities, to the point where it can be noticeable to the people around me (depending on how well they know me). right now, the name that resonates with me most is ācassidyā, i like to dress in strictly earth tones, iām mostly disinterested in human interaction, and iām very anxious. however, i can feel the name āveronicaā (or, alternatively, āronnieā) beginning to resonate with me, along with a want to dress in more scene kid-type clothing and be more social and outgoing. in the past, iāve noticed a recurring want to be male that surfaces every couple months, typically for a couple days or weeks at a time, in which social activism and the punk subculture resonates with me. there are also times where i want to put a huge amount of work into my appearance, makeup, etc, but other times when i only do the absolute bare minimum (i also experience chronic pain that makes living hard, so thereās that). i do have a history of trauma that i dont really want to get into, lol, but it mainly consists of repeated abandonment, severe emotional neglect, and some aspect of physical neglect as well (it only happened one time, but that one time nearly landed me in the hospital, so iām not sure to what degree it counts). the whole memory gaps thing seems somewhat applicable to my situation, but my entire life feels vaguely hazy so i canāt really tell what i can and cant remember. i feel like i should mention that iāve been professionally diagnosed w mdd and gad, and iāve been evaluated for bipolar 2 due to hypomanic-like episodes that typically last between 1-3 weeks, but it was ruled out. im also only 4teen, so perhaps this is just puberty doing its thing; itās just beginning to get really frustrating because iām never happy with my appearance, my wardrobe, my room, my friends, or my hobbies. i feel like a misshapen excuse of a human being, or a mish-mash of parts that arenāt entirely mine.
alas, ive fallen victim to venting and asking for advice from strangers on the internet. do i recognize that this is most likely a piss-poor idea? yes, yes i do. will i do it anyways? yes, yes i will. my therapist (bless her heart) will run and tell my mom anything and everything that ails me, which ends up with my mom repeatedly asking me if im faking my symptoms and undermining everything i say when faced by a doctor. so, is this a crappy cry for attention, or is it something?
having chronic pain is just like. ur sitting perfectly still doing nothing meanwhile the space above your head keeps flashing -1hp -1hp -1hp -1hp -1hp -1hp -1hp -1hp -1hp -1hp
Reblog if you will never. Ever. Use AI in your writing.
things I wonāt let ai take away from human writers
em dash
ānot x, not y, but zā
short sentence stacking as a stylistic choice
none of these belong to ai. these are all what human writers have been writing since day one, way before ai was invented. ai was trained to mimic how human writers write ā so em dash, not x not y but z and short sentence stacking would never have been used by ai at all if ai hadnāt learned and mimicked them from human writers.
no, you are not āfighting against aiā by accusing every work that has em dash, not x not y but z or short sentence stacking in it as ai-generated, you are helping ai harm the writing community by engaging in witch hunt and scaring human writers away from creating/sharing their works for fear of being wrongly accused of using ai.
speculations, accusations and ai witch hunt harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more.
i will forever love em dashes!!! em dash truther!!!! i am passionate about em dashes!!!!!
reblog if you love ao3 exactly how it is and you donāt want it to āupdateā or change in any wayā”
killjoy here but yes there is a difference between disabled and can keep a job & disabled and cannot work to have an income.
there is a difference between disabled with a visually average body & disabled with limb, face and/or chest wall differences.
there's a difference between disabled with on and off sensory sensitivities & disabled with a sensory disability that prevents you from percieving or interacting with that sense.
there is a difference between disabled with occasional communication differences & disabled and unable to communicate without a device, an interpreter, or at all
there is a difference between disabled and struggles to shower & disabled and cannot maintain basic hygiene without intervention
there is a difference between disabled and has difficulty walking & disabled and cannot walk a single step, no matter what, no matter when
if we want to do 'disabled community', community should center the voices of those most affected. if awareness that you are not the most affected makes you feel uncomfortable or invalidated that's a personal issue to sort out on your own time. hope this helps

i love sitting on the floor in public places. my knees hurt; should have put a bench there.
is there anyone in the Kintsugi (Broken but Not Unfixable) discord server who knows of any updates from PhantomReads or melodysrefrain? i know PhantomReads has been struggling, so i am not attempting to rush them, but i do not have discord and would simply like to know if there are any updates on the status of the fic (hiatus, discontinued, etc.). also, does anyone know of a Kintsugi tumblr community? i could try and make one if there isnāt.
a couple years ago i went swimming in a lake w a group of people, and i ended up bleeding through the period swim bottoms i was wearing, so i used my towel to wipe up some of the blood. later a racist guy asked to use it to dry off, so he dried himself off w my period blood. fuck racist peoplešš
