Yeah, there’s a series of videos where they question whether Helen Keller was a real person or else “faking it”. Worst of all, the argument for why she couldn’t have been real is that no deaf and blind person could “do all that” referring to her extensive education, the 12 books she wrote, world travel, and work campaigning on things like civil rights and women’s suffrage. I think my least favorite commentary is from this writer on Medium saying: “Generation Z literally does not believe Helen Keller existed. And frankly, I’m having a hard time accepting that she did myself. I don’t feel bad or wrong for it … Does it stem from our own insecurities — could it be that a blind, deaf woman with more success in life than all of us is too much to grasp? Possibly.”

I amend my statement. Disabled people should be allowed to hunt Helen Keller-deniers for sport.

The trick to getting to this point is to just think of yourself as an extra in a movie.

I used to be so self conscious about existing in public but I’ve slowly realized that if I just saw some random fat guy in the background of a movie I probably wouldn’t even think about him.

This is why I’ve come to describing myself as just some guy. I’m just some guy! Nobody gets mad at just some guy for reading a nutrition label in the grocery store. He’s just some dude. He’s a part of The Public. The Masses. The Customers. That’s what this place was made for!

i was out with my ex once when three *very* young queer kids, like thirteen years old, came up to us and asked us “are you guys, you know…” and did the limp wrist thing at us. one of them loudly exclaimed that it was so cool to meet other queer people in real life. this was in public in an unbelievably conservative area - we didn’t even feel safe holding hands because we were surrounded by Mormons. we got lucky that day, but I’m begging y’all to remember that the world doesn’t work like the internet. other queers are real fuckin people. don’t do this shit. OP is right; tell me you like my jacket, or my patches, or the rainbow spokes on my wheelchair, but don’t out either of us!

Honestly it doesn't matter how safe you think you are. It's dangerous. You can't out people! Even if they're giving "obvious" signs. Yes those signs are for other queer people to see but they're usually subtle enough that most conservatives won't recognize them.

You give a nod.

You smile.

You keep going unless there's an actual reason to talk to them because the person who's behind y'all in the grocery line may be a bigot who lives in the same apartment complex of your new "friend" and you just opened them up to hate crimes.

We're not being paranoid.

These are things that have happened.

You can put yourself in danger all you want but don't put other people at risk.

Y’all. The world is not Tumblr and it is not safe. I have literally had to protect my friends from being physically attacked by random strangers in public places because we were visibly queer.

Outing people is incredibly dangerous and incredibly rude and it could get someone killed. And especially as a minor outing yourself in public is a good way to get someone following you out to a parking lot and making sure you never make it home. Be fucking careful!
