I just realised that if Australia had managed to beat the USA in the World Cup, there would've been a good chance of a USA v Iran match held in Texas for the round of 32. So, maybe it was for the best that didn't happen.

Clearly FIFA were expecting the co-host nations to win their respective Groups, because while Mexico did, and so their next 2 matches will be held in Mexico (just like their previous 3), Switzerland won Group B, so they get the advantage of ... playing their next 2 matches in Canada, while Canadians have to fly off to sunny LA (then Houston if they win). Oh dear.

If I'm reading this correctly, there are two spots left in the round of 32, and three candidates: Austria, Algeria and Iran. The winner of Austria v Algeria will go on to verse Spain, and Switzerland will verse Iran. But if Austria v Algeria is a draw, then Spain will verse Austria, and Switzerland will verse Algeria, meaning Iran will be out.

So, essentially, Iran just needs either of the others to win, not draw. What a weird position to find yourself in; not barracking for either side specifically. Just desperately hoping they're not evenly matched.
