Having your interests mocked as a kid and general low self esteem will have you insulting the things you like even when they're generally considered very good. Because you like it, and historically when you like something it's stupid and not worth anyone's time. So you will say nonsense like "I recommend this book/game/film, but it's okay if you hate it, it sucks, I really enjoyed it but that's because I'm an idiot" and you are recommending them the Citizen fucking Kane of that particular media type. So by 14 Noel got major depression, and in the book it was connected with abuse he (and all his loved ones) experienced in his household from his fuck ass father.

But recently I made a post about Noel's bisexuality and there was one post that got stuck in my mind - about Noel projecting on George Michael and how he seemed almost bitter at him for not coming out earlier. And how he mentioned one specific year - 1981.

And how old Noel was in 1981? Fourteen.

So as I see it, Noel got depressed not only because of abuse he was going through at that time, but also because he started to realize that he has attraction not only to girls but to boys as well.

And naturally being raised religious, especially in Catholic beliefs that make nothing but raise shame and guilt in its congregation (especially in sensitive youths)

and also having lived with a man like Tommy who would beat his children for less, I feel like realization of his "sin" and "amorality" would make Noel's depression much much worse at 14.
