;; Colored Soulmate AU
Color had once been given to him when he started university but his tie to his soulmate had been severed the final year. Going back to black and white had not been easy when his mind remembered the colors and how vibrant his life had been. Nothing had been the same since the day his color was taken away.
From the moment he had stepped back into Middleton though, Nicholae could have sworn flecks of color were coming back into his life. His hometown was small and it was rare for new families to make it their new home. Had a new soulmate moved into the town while he was away for school? No, he wanted to believe his eyes were only playing tricks, teasing a world full of life and happiness that he so greatly missed.
When the elevator opened to the Complex lobby he was greeted with lively sounds from the large kitchen and lounge. It had been like that the first day he stepped inside the building and was one of the main reasons he chose it. He stepped around the corner to see a small group sitting around the coffee table, laughing and enjoying what looked like a delicious breakfast. The brunet had to take a double look when he noticed a faint shade of red on the crispy bacon.
"Good morning," he was greeted by a tall, light skinned woman, "You're Nicolae, right?" She gave him little time to respond before holding her hand out and introducing herself. "I'm Evon. Welcome to the Complex. You meet the twins yet?"
He let out a laugh and nodded his head, immediately remembering the rather animated twins he met on the first day. "Nili and Vili. Yeah, they made their presence known not too long after I did the paperwork."
There was an almost snort-giggle from Evon as she could only imagine what his first meeting with her two friends had been like. "There's breakfast in the kitchen. Feel free to help yourself.”
As he thanked her for the offer, another woman stepped out of the kitchen, holding a plate of blueberry pancakes and asking Evon if she knew where the twins were at. She was one of the few people he really recognized since coming back from university; Dis Benbow, a young woman he knew from high school. He seemed to fade out at that moment as it was no longer the freckles that decorated her skin that told her hair color - but the color was there. Dim at first but it seemed with every passing second the color was becoming more and more vivid.
He noticed Evon step away, joining the group on the couches, and the redhead in front of him had turned her attention to him. It was then color completely filled the world around him, starting from her hair and moving out. The expression on her face had changed, shock at first then the smile returned to her lips and it was evident that he wasn't the only one who had the color in his life. This woman whom he had known for years was his soulmate and life was telling him now.
"Better late than never."

Since that first meeting, something clicked with Dis and Nicolae and the two found themselves going out almost every weekend they had free. They were simple dates; dinner and a movie or a drive into the city but nothing more serious than that. Dis felt fragile and scared of pursuing something deeper when she had the twins and their needs to worry about. She couldn't really focus on herself when they were most important to her. Nicolae was understanding though and always made sure she was comfortable when he held her hand or put his arm around her waist. The twins, however, were cautious of their cousin's suitor for more than his ability to keep up with their pranks and playful lash them back when need be. The two would always stay up until their guardian returned home from a date and if she wasn't back at her predetermined time then they would spam her phone with texts and calls until they were sure she was alright.
The date on this night was different as the two were celebrating two months of courtship; the restaurant was more luxurious than their usual place and it ended with a moonlit walk through the park then back to the Complex. They told stories of their childhood and laughed about recent events in the apartment building. It felt as if they were the only two people around and it only gave a feeling of disappointment when they finally made it home, wishing such a wonderful night didn't have to come to an end. In the elevator ride to the fifth floor, Nicolae could swear Dis's grip on his hand was getting tighter as if they wouldn't get to see each other for a long time when they parted.
At the door of the redhead's apartment, she stood in front of him, still tightly holding his hand as a bashful smile appeared on her face. Thanking him for another wonderful night out, Dis leaned over to give him the usual peck on the cheek but his head turned just slightly, moving his lips into her path to meet in a gentle embrace. A soft gasp could be heard from her as she pulled back enough to put a tiny space between their lips. He could see the redness that immediately rose to her pale cheeks and couldn't fight smile having yet to see such an innocent look on the rather mature woman's face. There was a returned smile from her before she leaned back in, pressing her lips back to his in a real, tender, first kiss.
The moment of bliss was short lived, of course, as the click of the apartment door was heard and, as it swung open, the two adults broke the kiss and put distance between them. Two pairs of suspicious eyes were upon them, shifting glares back and forth from Dis to Nicolae, before Nili spoke up, "You're late, missy. If you don't wanna be grounded for breaking curfew then you better get in here."
Dis simply laughed and nodded her head, responding, "I'm comin', I'm comin'." Looking back to her date, she gave another wide grin and let her hand slide from him, saying an affectionate 'good night' before stepping into the apartment. The twins would silently motion to Nicolae that they'd be watching him then quickly shut the door in his face. Besides that the reaction was rather expected from the two teens, nothing could wipe the expression of pure euphoria from Nicolae's face.

The mothers at senior orientation stare at her as she looks over the student events for the year. They whisper as she turns to the twin teens and smiles, telling them how to get the most out of their final year of high school. Everyone knows they're not her children but they question why a woman in her late twenties would take in and care of teenagers when she should be settling down and starting her own family. Of course, the whispers are not so secret from her ears but she always keeps a smile. Why explain her actions to others when the only people that mattered were right at her side?
--
The redheaded woman thinks she can keep a secret but doesn't know that nearly the entire Complex knows about it. Numerous tenets have seen her out in the garden in the middle of the night, illuminated only by small lights among the flowers, dancing with no care in the world. Those nights hiding away are the only time she dances anymore. Some believe it's the fault of the twins but she would disagree, knowing very well her will to do anything with her passion had died years ago. She can get out her frustrations, any of her negative emotions, when she's alone in the garden - clear mind for a new day.
--
She's good at hiding her sorrow when she struggles with the day. Memories of her mother flashing through her mind, trying to stay strong to make her proud, the need to keep a dry eye to not worry her twins - those things can make her break. She'll find herself slumped beside her bed, head in hands, silently sobbing. She knows once it starts, she has to see it to the end. She can't keep a secret though and more than once she would find herself clinging tightly to the dark haired male and female as they comforted her.
--
Sometimes she finds herself running on little sleep, keeping herself going late at night to make sure the twins have what they need for school the next day. Waking up in the morning groggy and not wanting to face the day, she'll simply whisper, "Do it for them," and a smile will immediately form on her lips. A mantra mumbled every morning and with every obstacle she meets in the day. The two happy faces that greet her every day are enough to get her through her day.
--
From her spot in the bleachers, surrounded by many of the other members of the Complex, she can see the decorated caps of her beloved twins. This was a day they had all worked hard to reach. Never once did she ever believe they wouldn't be sitting there. As one crossed the stage and accepted their diploma, Complex tenets cheered loudly while the redheaded guardian smiled with tears rolling down her cheeks. No one was more proud than she was at that moment. When she hugs them later, her tears soaking into the black polyester gowns, there's a whisper, "They would be so proud of you two."

I’m really drawn to self-reliant, strong characters – I love the bite that these women have. They’re dominant in their own worlds and they take control. With Ygritte, I love the fact that she’s brilliant at archery and as a result, she can stand up to anyone ten times her size because she’s proficient in her art.
