It's heartbreaking to think how if Shane had realized that his initial draw to Ilya was in fact attraction, if he had known he was gay at that time he never would have approached him in that parking lot.

Something tragic in the idea that him being unaware of himself and his desires was the only way he was going to actually let himself want and to act on it.

yeah the reason ilya’s depression gets worse in ottawa is not because he hates ottawa and hates the centaurs. like don’t get me wrong it doesn’t help that he’s suddenly in a new place and on a shit team. but that’s not the problem. the problem is that he’s spent almost a decade playing the game of ‘well if i had what i wanted then i’d be fixed’ and then he got what he wanted - his dad is gone and he doesn’t have to go back to russia or have contact with his horrible brother and shane loves him and he loves shane and they’re going to be together now - and unfortunately it didn’t fix a damn thing

The thing is, nobody is a rational person first and foremost. Your first instinct is always instinct, something that makes sense in the simple survival framework of your animal brain, whose job is to keep you from dying. That instinct isn't always necessarily the most logical and rational thing for this context.

Another curveball of this situation is the fact that different people have different first instincts, and you can never really anticipate how alien someone else's framework might be. This is not a fault in your character, or anyone else's. It's practically impossible to predict that someone's first instinctive reaction to a situation would be to do something that you yourself would never, ever do.

For example, let's take a snap-judgement situation where your instincts kick in: Someone runs past you at top speed, hauling ass like their life depends on it, and yells "RUN!" as they bolt right past you with no sign of stopping. Personally, before seeing it myself, it would have never occurred to me that some peoples' first innate instinct in this situation is to stop whatever they're doing and simply stand there, going "why? :0"
