Hi!! So I absolutely adore your art (your Ghost pics are some of my faves of him!!!) and your style is just so aspirational. Im someone whos more into cell shading, and while ive always wanted to try a more painterly style, it feels so intimidating to start. Do you have any advice or tips for someone whos just starting out? Might make it less scary if ive got some help going in!! ^u^;; Thanks in advance!!!!

hi!! thank you :D honestly, idk. my art style is not very painterly per say (at least not as much as it used to be, added some old 22-23-24 art for context down below)

BUT i'd recommend checking out Sinix Design (especially this video. in this one he explains how painterly rendering is less about blending everything and more about where you keep things sharp vs soft)

as for colors: don’t be afraid to mish-mash them a bit at first (even if it looks messy or "muddy" - you can always fix it later). painterly style often uses slightly “dirty” or varied colors instead of flat ones, but the key is to keep value structure clear

it will feel messy at the start, imo, that’s normal :D painterly stuff looks waay worse before it looks better compared to cell shaded e.g. down below (old cell-shaded vs newer more painterly wip)
