Une histoire de cœur qui bat
« Gniiii…. Viaaaaaaaande…. Paiiiiiiin…. Mrrgh.
- Réveille-toi, Bouffeuse de patates ! Ton manuel est couvert de bave ! »
Bam ! Le bruit sourd d’une tête qu’on frappe résonna à travers la pièce. Il était tard dans la nuit, mais de la lumière s’échappait encore du dortoir des filles.
« Hé, vous pouvez me rappeler qui a eu l’idée de faire comme les garçons et de passer une nuit blanche ?!
- C’était ton idée aussi, Ymir. Calme-toi…
- Alors tu veux abandonner et aller te coucher, Christa ? Tu sais bien que cet examen va porter sur l’histoire et la construction du dispositif de manœuvre tridimensionnelle et qu’il est ridiculement difficile ! Et il va même compter dans notre notation finale !
- Argh… Je ne vais pas dormir alors ! Je vais bûcher.
- N.. Nous aussi, nous allons étudier ! »
Mina et Hannah, deux autres recrues, rejoignirent le trio assis autour de la table. Ymir, qui en avait assez de rester assise à regarder les autres se frotter désespérément les yeux pour ne pas s'endormir, croisa les bras et leur fit une proposition :
« Maintenant que j’y pense, les garçons ont dit qu’ils avaient demandé à l’un d’entre eux de raconter une histoire pour les réveiller. Hé, Christa, raconte-nous une anecdote !
- Hein ?! »

Ainsi placée au centre de l’attention, Christa balaya la petite assemblée d’un regard nerveux.
« Mais… de quoi est-ce que vous voulez que je parle ?
- Oh, je veux que nous raconte la fois où quelqu’un a fait s’emballer ton cœur, Christa ! »
La proposition d’Hannah alluma une lueur d’intérêt dans les yeux de toutes les filles, sauf ceux de Christa. Elle avait l’air perdu, comme si elle ne comprenait même pas de quoi elles parlaient.
« Mais…
- Tu n’es pas obligée de trouver quelque chose d’original. Par exemple, tu peux raconter la fois où une personne t’est apparue comme quelqu’un de bien, en raison d’une chose surprenante qu’elle a faite. Tu vois, ce genre d’anecdotes ! »
Toutes les filles acquiescèrent à l’unanimité, leur regard avide braqué sur Christa. Cette dernière réfléchit, puis claqua tout à coup des doigts :
« Ah ! Et si je racontais cette histoire-là ? »

C’était lors d’un exercice d’entraînement. Le scénario était le suivant : les cadets devaient réfléchir à un plan pour s’échapper d’un lieu rempli de titans et on avait mis à leur disposition un nombre important de chevaux. Informer les gens du danger et les aider à évacuer sur les chevaux en cas d’urgence faisait partie des devoirs d’un soldat.
Cette fois-là, Christa faisait équipe avec Ymir et Sasha.
« Le groupe des chevaux réservés aux citoyens a réussi à atteindre la Forêt des Arbres Géants !
- Je vais utiliser le dispositif tridimensionnel pour les garder à l’œil ! Toi, Sasha, tu protèges l’arrière !
- Ça marche ! »
Pendant que Christa menait les chevaux à l’avant, elle s’inquiétait pour Ymir qui progressait dans les airs. Durant cet entraînement, des titans devaient apparaître pour les surprendre. Ainsi, des rondins de bois censés représenter les longs bras tendus vers l’avant d’un titan avaient été placés sur leur itinéraire pour apparaître au dernier moment, ainsi que des mannequins en forme de titans destinés à leur barrer la route.
« Devant toi ! »
Un titan factice apparut de nulle part devant Christa. Elle fit immédiatement faire un détour à sa monture et s’assura que le reste des chevaux avaient bien changé de direction. Elle utilisa ensuite son dispositif tridimensionnel pour s’envoler elle-même dans les airs. Quand soudain…
« Argh ?!
- Ymir !! »
Un rondin était apparu, cette fois-ci devant Ymir…
« Aaaaaaah ! »

« …Et c’est ainsi que Sasha nous a sauvées !
- Ouais, c’était assez inattendu. »
Sasha était censée se trouver à l’arrière, mais elle avait utilisé son harnais de manœuvre tridimensionnelle pour surgir à l’avant, où elle s’était servi de ses deux jambes pour flanquer un coup au rondin, le détournant ainsi de sa trajectoire. Grâce à elle, Ymir avait évité un coup en pleine face, tandis que Christa avait pu se concentrer sur la destruction du mannequin, ce qui leur avait permis de finir l’entraînement sans dommage.
« C’était cool.
- Je suis sûre que Sasha l’a fait seulement par instinct, mais elle nous a bel et bien sauvées. »
Sasha était tombée dans un sommeil profond pendant l’histoire de Christa, et Ymir se força à sourire en lui tapotant gentiment la tête.
….Mais Mina et Hannah n’avaient pas l’air ravies ; elles semblaient déçues.
« Ahem… Ce n’est pas ce que nous avions en tête…
- On voulait entendre une histoire sur… eh bien... plutôt sur une personne spéciale, j’imagine…
- Quoi ? Ce n’était pas assez bien pour vous ?
- Non… ça nous a aidées à nous réveiller, mais... »
Les deux cadettes, qui étaient déçues, eurent un déclic : la confiance qui régnait au sein de ce trio et leur travail d’équipe soudé n’étaient-ils pas le secret de leurs excellents résultats ?
« …Je crois bien que la leçon à en tirer est que nous devrions nous préoccuper davantage de notre entraînement, nous aussi, au lieu d’essayer d’entendre de stupides histoires d’amour.
- Hein ? Pfff…
- …En tout cas, c’est franchement agaçant de voir l’héroïne de cette histoire complètement dans les vapes en ce moment. »
Ainsi, la nuit continua d’avancer tranquillement dans le dortoir des filles.

There's also the really interesting bit in the Au smartpass interview where Armin says that he spends time with other characters, but that Jean probably saw him together with Eren a lot because he was looking at Mikasa.
Hi there! Yeah I’ve read that (it’s available here, for those who want to take a look!). Here’s the question pertaining to Jean:
Q: We have another question that goes “Jean said he finds your attachment with Eren disgusting. So how do you normally behave around Eren?”Armin: Ah……That is……really mean, to call it disgusting. I think the problem lies with how Jean sees things.
Q: What do you mean?Armin: After joining the Training Corps, I also carry out my 3DMG check with Marco and sat by Reiner during mealtimes. I guess Jean must be always looking at Mikasa, so he tends to notice us together.
I haven’t had my friend take a look at what they’re translating as “disgusting” here, but I’m betting it’s a similar word to the one that Jean uses in the manga to communicate that he is “creeped out” by Armin and Eren’s relationship.
The interesting thing about the Smartpass AU is that all the interviews are from the point of view of a particular character, so the answers are limited to their understanding of a situation. Here we have Armin attempting to explain Jean’s perception of Armin’s relationship with Eren by suggesting that Jean is always looking at Mikasa, and Mikasa is almost always with Eren, so whenever Jean sees Armin, he’s with Eren. So Armin says that Jean is misreading how “clingy” and dependent he is on Eren, while also confirming that Jean spends a lot of time looking at Mikasa, who is constantly at Eren’s side.
But that’s just Armin’s perception, and while we can often trust Armin to read a situation correctly, that’s also a talent that Jean supposedly has. So who’s viewpoint do we accept? Maybe they’re both overstating the case a bit? Maybe Jean is not always looking at Mikasa; he does, according to his Smartpass AU interview, hang out with Marco quite a bit … and Armin also apparently spends time with Marco, so Jean and Armin should presumably also see each other around Marco as well. This interview answer could also be an attempt on Armin’s part to get back at Jean for his rude comment by suggesting that Jean fawns over Mikasa just like Jean accused him of fawning over Eren. The only thing I can say for certain is that I think both Armin and Jean are exaggerating the extent to which the other is focusing their attention on one person.
It’s also a possible reading that Armin does hang out more with Eren than anyone else (even if he has a wider circle of friends than Jean realizes), and that Jean is paying attention to Armin as well as Mikasa. After all, this interview only touches on half of Jean’s statement: the second half is that he always knew Armin was brilliant. Jean must have been watching Armin to some extent, or he wouldn’t have formed an opinion of Armin’s capabilities. Obviously, him keeping tabs on Armin doesn’t preclude him staring at Mikasa, but I do think Armin’s answer is overly simple. Like Jean’s!
Mostly what I get from this interview is that Armin doesn’t want Jean (and probably other people) to see him as “too attached” to Eren (however we want to interpret that statement), that he has other friends besides Eren, and that Jean’s crush on Mikasa is probably quite obvious to the rest of his comrades, even if he tries to keep it to himself.
All this being said, I must admit that while I think a lot of the material offered in the Smartpass AU is interesting, I don’t necessarily consider it canon. I know that Isayama supervises the content that they put out, but if something is not in the main story of the manga or backed up by something that is in the manga, I don’t factor it into my readings. (Just like I ignore pretty much everything JKR tweets lol; if it’s not in the book, it’s not in the book *shrug*). So I take it all with a grain of salt. I think, based on the scene in the manga, Jean has been watching Armin to some extent, even if he has a flawed perception of the relationship between Armin and Eren and their relative closeness.
