i wonder how many people currently in the hobby know that Dollzone started off selling recasts. i feel like thatās a bit of an ancient forgotten fact now. i suspect the path from recast manufacturer to legitimate manufacturer employing actual artists has closed, though i donāt really know since i havenāt seen any other company try to follow it? there have been recast manufacturers that also sold some legitimate artist sculpts which were generally rejected by the community but they didnāt cease selling recasts or anything and still primarily focused on this (hence the rejection) so itās not the same situation
a thing thatās changed is that in all the recast controversies back then, companies were like trying to deny they were recasts or having sculpts with a mix of original sculpting/modifications and recast parts, because they didnt expect a straightforward unashamed recast to be embraced or able to sell. (that existence of a creative or original element also imo indicates some potential to then go in a legit direction afterwards.) the modern recast manufacturer more often than not just wholly duplicates the entire product and slaps the original name on it and then thatās what plenty of people want. the tendency to mix recast and original parts does carry on in the like ABS doll world i think but i donāt know much about those. anyway just reflecting
suggestion certainly too invasive and rude to actually be made on DoA without getting some sort of warning but some of the people who had transactions with the server owner in the past probably have her address in some old emails somewhere so maybe could send her like. postcards and letters being like Hey If You See This Please Remedy The Situation And Dont Let Our Twenty Year Old Hobby-centralizing Website Implode, in case thatās a bit harder to ignore than the calls, PMs and texts that arenāt being responded to and/or in case seeing physical letters ends up more able to provoke a sense of guilt or responsibility and get her to do something
āuh well i hope doa gets replaced by something less gatekeep-y that allows all dollsā is like hearing some massive anime site is going down and hoping it gets replaced with a site that allow all cartoons or something. it is fine for sites to have a focus that isnāt every single possible thing and yeah sometimes drawing those lines gets a little arbitrary
With DoA gone where would you ask questions about specific dolls? Like when I bought a second hand luts head and I was looking at huajing bodies, someone told me that huajing does colour matching to luts. I've never really used discord, would that be a good place for this?
I only used discord briefly when I was playing ffxiv during lockdowns but I definitely didn't enjoy the big bjd server. I'm more of a hop in, ask my questions, hop out person, not super interested in maintaining rapport in a chat room.
I havenāt regularly used the big bjd server since a few years after it was created because the format is much more overwhelming than a forum, but i guess itās my reluctant nomination for a second-best place to ask questions. however, things asked in a q and a channel on discord will get inevitably buried quickly in a way forum threads donāt, so questions which are very specific have a relatively low chance of being seen by the right person while visible.
being able to have so many specific threads to come back to for reference over years, each likely subscribed to by some owners of those dolls who would be alerted to your question, is (was) amazing. there isnāt really any practical way to replicate that on other websites or social media.
some companiesā owner communities have dedicated servers like the Super Dollfie one (that one is very good and useful) and are thus able to provide a reliable and extensive knowledge base where questions will go to people who know about those specific dolls, but i think this is probably applicable to very few of the companies out there :(
whatās happening to den of angels appears to be the same thing that happened to den of demons: site owner either stopped caring about or just otherwise stopped being able to maintain the site, and either way didnāt/couldnāt put in even the limited effort required to at least transfer ownership to any of many people who were quite willing to take over the responsibility and put in effort/funds to keep it alive.
for those not familiar with den of demons, although it started as a circlejerk type forum for the hobby as the parody name implies, it ended up hosting a valuable database of known scammers in the bjd community and other resources as well as having a somewhat close knit social community. for those reasons people wanted it kept alive after the original owner was no longer able to maintain it, and I believe ownership was transferred at least once, but eventually that next owner stopped being willing to pay for it and refused for whatever reason to transfer it to any other people who offered to take over and then became impossible to contact; the site went down.
it seemed unthinkable at the time that the same exact thing could someday happen to DoA, orders of magnitude larger, which seemed so much more stable and a fixture of the community. but it was vulnerable to the exact same issue in the end. at least it sounds like itāll stay up in some kind of archival form (didnāt happen with den of demons), which is better than nothing, but the fact that in cases like this people are so willing to put in the work and money to keep it going yet are unable to overcome the choke point of āsite owner disappearedā is really frustrating. years and years of community effort wasted because of one person being unable or unwilling to be contacted long enough to pass over ownership.
i would guess many surviving forums around the net that may contain a lot of valuable compiled niche info about hobby or fandom interests are in danger of this kind of fate these days. there might be some kind of advice to be gleaned here about responsible site owners of large forum communities setting up means of real life contact with the mod team and other contingency plans for what should happen to their site if they become unable or unwilling to maintain it and cannot be contacted, though I wonder how many surviving forum situations in 2026 even still are around to have time to benefit from that lesson.
Quick experiment. Hang on.

Seen @look-back-month-challenge today, thought I might try.
āI still get a lot of blind box dolls and mostly take photos of what arrived recently (and I don't want to clutter this blog with too many of those).
Today is 07.02, so the theme is 'favorite'?
And my favorite doll is still Unoa Sist.

Day 2: Color
The best doll I've ever painted, I am still so happy with that beautiful face and color match. Happy Black History Month
Faputa with clothies~
I worked on aGatti Danielle for Just Make Something month. What do you mean he still isnāt wearing anything?
Me: Hey do that cute cat pose! Danielle: Like this? Me: You just look like youāre about to fuck someone up. Danielle: *Trying harder*
Another throwback to when I finally made a wig for Daniele, and this comment from @burinazar that still makes me laugh:

commission variety pack!
i've listed some commission slots on my ko-fi.
a custom fullset, 325ā¬. includes a custom sculpt of your character + clothing + an accessory. fantasy/scifi characters preferred, i'm not the person to hire to make A Regular Human Guy.
a stock fullset, 100ā¬. includes a print of any of my existing dolls, fully painted to your specifications, and a custom piece of clothing/accessory.
a stock blank, 50ā¬. a blank print of any existing doll.
a blank head, 35ā¬. a blank print of any existing head in custom size, up to 1/3 scale + 2 pairs of eye bases. if you have a body ready, i can customize the neck hole size to fit.
additional info:
these are PLA fdm prints, not resin. they have a 3d printed texture & some surface imperfections, comparable to the dolls i regularly post. i do have a new printer that gets the layers ultra smoooooth though.
slots are free, but i will paypal invoice you for the full price before starting work. this is because i don't want to deal with payments and refunds if for some reason we decide to cancel the commission in the discussion phase.
also, the prices are fairly reliable estimates, but the final cost may still vary on case by case basis.
after claiming the slot, dm me on ko-fi or tumblr and we will discuss what you want.
dolls that are custom commissions or my/my partner's ocs are not available as stock dolls. if a doll is an oc or a comm, it is always stated in the post, no stealth ocs around.
the size of full dolls can be around 20-40cm, depending on what you want.
i'm trying to work through my filament stock -> color availability depends on what i have on hand. a relevant detail is that i don't have any pure white at the moment.
this post is all about bjds, but wire armature art dolls are also available.
i can't ship to the US at the moment. shipping to EU & UK is 25ā¬, the rest of the world 45ā¬.
estimated shipping during november.
if i've missed something, absolutely do ask!
my comms have been closed for over a year now due to burnout, so this is a tentative test run. if it goes well, slots will be available a bit more regularly than once a year.
ALSO i've lost my list of people to alert when i open commissions. i would have @-ed all of you, but can't find the info. my apologies for this.
I did it, I finished the sweater! The phone camera is doing some glamour business that makes it look so much less scraggly than it truly does in person. So we can pretend it's shiny and cleanly made lol
Huge oversight, um, my pony heads do not come off. And the sweater doesn't open. So I uh, shoved her entire body down through the neck hole. And it worked 0_o
I've been putting off taking better pictures of Rafayel because I'm terribly sad about his custom eyes lmao. I foolishly OK'd the half blue half pink that the maker did without thinking about the logistics of how the eyes would look within the doll (when I have them turned the way they're supposed to be, all you can see is pink........). OTL I'm currently coping by having to eyes turned to just show a little bit of the pink, but jfsdkalf IT SURE BUGS ME
By the way, this is how the eyes look in the doll when they're in correctly, and how they're supposed to look, but unfortunately, I am the dum-dum that OK'd them when the eye maker sent me pictures lmao.
What an absolutely awesome pose!
Personally adore the pink eyes with the warmer tone of the wig in the second picture but I know how it bugs you when something doesn't fit the vision š©
This is Gavin, my oldest and dearest of my dolls~ I got him in 2009 and...he sure looks it lol
