i wonder how many people currently in the hobby know that Dollzone started off selling recasts. i feel like that’s a bit of an ancient forgotten fact now. i suspect the path from recast manufacturer to legitimate manufacturer employing actual artists has closed, though i don’t really know since i haven’t seen any other company try to follow it? there have been recast manufacturers that also sold some legitimate artist sculpts which were generally rejected by the community but they didn’t cease selling recasts or anything and still primarily focused on this (hence the rejection) so it’s not the same situation
a thing that’s changed is that in all the recast controversies back then, companies were like trying to deny they were recasts or having sculpts with a mix of original sculpting/modifications and recast parts, because they didnt expect a straightforward unashamed recast to be embraced or able to sell. (that existence of a creative or original element also imo indicates some potential to then go in a legit direction afterwards.) the modern recast manufacturer more often than not just wholly duplicates the entire product and slaps the original name on it and then that’s what plenty of people want. the tendency to mix recast and original parts does carry on in the like ABS doll world i think but i don’t know much about those. anyway just reflecting
