Let me tell you about the deer-man. One day a hunter became lost in the woods and came across a wishing tree where the messages of people were delivered to the gods by sacred deers. The hunter, in his hunger and ignorance, accidentally killed a sacred deer and ate it. As punishment the gods made the hunter grow a set of antlers from his forehead which could receive the innermost wishes of the people around him. Each time the man heard the mind of another, his antlers would grow causing a splitting headache until he prayed at the shrine for the gods to grant that particular wish. Such was the life of the deer man, forever living in the pain caused by another’s dream.
