BISEXUAL POLYAMORY?!?!?? BISEXUAL POLYAMORY PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
I keep thinking how Cathy and Hareton would fare in Thrushcross Grange after their marriage. Obviously the notion that this is basically the book's very anticipated happy end implies that things will be okey-dokey from then on, but given what the remain characters had to deal with we can infer that probably they won't be, like, perfect. Obviously.
Lockwood, on his final visit to Heights sees Cathy giving Hareton a lesson, but, even after overcoming her bitterness, after her abuser is gone, she is sassy and actually (jokingly, I know) threatens to pull his hair if he makes mistakes. It doesn't really line up with how Nelly was describing Cathy Jr as very sweet nice girl, but aside from the unreliable narrator explanation the reason she embrased casual physical pressure (again, the joking threat of it, but still) could be her trauma she underwent because of Heathcliff. Things like that don't just disappear
Will the two remember Linton? He was living with Hareton for years, and actually was Cathy's husband. They obviously will, but he probably won't haunt them in the way other characters in the story. This is sad, just like Isabella, Linton just vanished from the story after he's gone. This guys just can't catch a W
Cathy's visits to her parents' graves will be super awkward because there's Heathcliff's there too. I didn't get a feeling she forgave him, even though she made a compromise with Hareton not to speak ill of him. On the other hand she potentially could because "she has a better nature to forgive", so maybe after some years she won't be, like, actively enraged at him at least
Hareton's situation is really curious to me. He often is paralleled to Cathy Sr., and I think this parallel will continue beyond the events of the novel. He, just like his aunt, will be settled in Grange after marriage to a Linton, and we remember she said that being the lady of this refined house wasn't easy for Cathy even before Heathcliff's return. Hareton will be having a similar kind of pressure with another twist. Now he's the master of Thrushcross Grange (even though he was meant to be a master of another house), and considering that just some months ago he was basically a stable boy with fewer responsibilities it could qickly become overwhelming for him. Obviously there will be Nelly guiding him, but I can't imagine Hareton won't be feeling out of place, at least initially. Imagine him ordering searvants. Also with time he will be getting more and more realized percept of class divide that will recontextualize his own past as anessentually servant to Heathcliff which could amplify his insecurities
Also there's emphasis that Cathy is still pretty inexperienced and sheltered. Obviously, it's not a failure that she doesn't know financial intricacies of taking payments from absent tenants at the age of eighteen, but she has a long way to go too. And Nelly has a lot of work ahead of her
Joseph probably will be gone after some years after the finale at last, so I wonder in what form Wuthering Heights will continue to be at last. I imagine Hareton and Cathy's kids finding about this place and using it as a playground to search for ghosts that prabably exist there due to rumors. I don't imagine this making Cathy happy
But maybe despite all the trauma it all will be alrights still... Until Hareton goes on a business trip to Liverpool and returns wil a racially ambiguous kid to raise among his children
Great headcanons. The last line made me laugh!
