Trip to Skye: Part 6

After the lengthy explanation on the clan’s history Sheila has an epiphany “hey pop since I fixed the spiritual chain or whatev what if I can split the crown doohickey from the shell and return it to nict-neven?” Sheila excitedly said as Kerry thought on it. “okay buh we’re going tah need a plan an we might also have to go through *Elfame tah get it back also it’s Nicnevin”. So Sheila and Kerry spent the whole day trying to plan how in the realms they were going to get this done as well as getting plan appropriate outfits ie all black.

“So yer uncle because he messed wit tha queen he disappeared wit tha crown/shell amalgam” Kerry scaffolded “so are we gonna be dong an Elfame, heist-style-search-and-rescue?” Sheila said excitedly “I guess so wow ma *wee yin you look a bit too excited for this”. Sheila looked daggers at her dad “pop. Australia is boring most days this trip has been the most exciting thing in my life so far *true blue” Kerry smiles gently at his daughter. “So did uncle Dick get trapped too?” her dad nodded “yep that *eejit when he stole and merged the shell wit tha crown both got sucked into Elfhame so if we find him we should find the crown”.

Once night falls both Sheila and Kerry boat to the castle and they go back to where Sheila got morphed but before they get to the pool Kerry knocks his cane three times against an adjacent wall and a tunnel opens up. this pathway leads alongside the drop of the pool and follows it until a light sines ahead. before they go any further Sheila stops in her tracks “wait are you sure we will be safe? cause I know some faeries are dangerous” she says with concern. “ a sheòid we will be fine cus they will recognise the fae in us do nae fuss yersel lass I used to visit don here asa barin an they did nae give me no trouble”.

As Kerry said they were mostly ignored from the native scottish fae if anything they got shocked stares from humans that got trapped in Elfhame and soon they came to a small village of seelie pixies. “Shelia ya need tah keep silent till I have done what I need when tings are done I’ll let ya know”. Kerry walked up to the village’s centre and knocked his cane thrice against the ground and loudly proclaimed “okay I require the whereabouts of a McLoch any of yous ken where e is?”. It took a minute or two before a single pixie spoke up “yeah I know where a McLoch is what is it to you and what can I get out of it?” The pixie stood there in a defensive stance “I can offer ya some mortal realm food called a Tim-Tam” Kerry said as he gave the pixie a single Tim-Tam cookie that had been removed from the plastic packaging and put into a small paper bag. “You have a deal mortal” the pixie said with a smile as they jumped up to grab the bag then like cookie monster made a mess as they ate the Tim-Tam and the bag too.

Once the pixie had finished they quietly gestured for Kerry and Sheila to walk with them and they came towards a building that had seemingly been carved into the hills nearby. “okay mortals this is the museum/ mortal prison yer McLoch should be in here now the cont..” Kerry stopped the Pixie mid-sentence “this was nae contract it was a one time event an ya services will not be needed further seelie” the pixie looked disapointed “poo you looked like such Gwoks too you know your fair work” Kerry nodded in acknowledgement as Sheila looked at her dad in suprise as the pixie scampered off then Kerry looked at Sheila to say it’s done.

“Okay pop what on earth was that?” Sheila exclaimed in disbelief “I know how tha fair folk work I came here a lot as a wee barin an heard stories bout what they are like so I made sure to not say our names, not say tank you an not to end up unintentionally putting us inta a lifelong fae contract”. Sheila had to stand and think for a sec then nodded with understanding “So uncle Dick should be in there?” Kerry smiled at Sheila as she said that and they went to explore the museam.

they looked for nearly half an hour and they couldn’t find Robert. “Pop he ain’t here!” Sheila said as she flopped onto the floor but then a mortal in an exhibit tapped on the glass “hey girly are you and your dad ok?” the man looked like he had been trapped since the 50s. “We’re just trying tah find my brother Robert he stole something from Nicnevin years ago” Kerry explained to the man “oh wait bobby Lochy? he was in here for a while but he got taken to the castle slammer to keep a closer eye on him and try to fix that crown thing”. As soon as Kerry heard that name his face lit up with recognition “okay tank you fellow mortal i hope they are treatin’ ya ok” the man nodded “yeah the food ain’t like ma’s but it’s ok”.

As soon as Kerry and Sheila left the museum place and before they stepped out of the museum/dungeon a rumbling could be heard from underground and suddenly a huge snake tunneled through the ground infront of them and away to the distance.

"Crikey pa what was that? It looked like a flipping Mulga!" Sheila said quite taken aback. "Tha barin was a beithir an our ticket ta the castle" Kerry said as he climbed into the tunnel.

The two of them walked carefully and quietly not to disturb the structure of the tunnel and to not get soaked and go mermaid.

After a long trek they appeared just outside the castle's moat and were able to sneak into the dungeon of the royal seelie castle.

After looking for a good while Sheila and Kerry found a cell that oddly enough looked like it combined with some sort of lab. Relaxing in the corner of said lab/cell was none other than Robert. “Well look who snuck his way in here little kerry the cowerd” Robert said with venom in his words. “Robert tas been 50 years I know our family pissed you off but you need to get over it and let Sheila bring back the crown”. Robert sneered and looked at Sheila “Are you suppose to be me neice then ay?” Robert looked Kerry in the eye “wha’s so special about ‘er then?”. Sheila puffed up her chest and stood in her most intimidating pose “I done unlocked the mermaid gene! I went full H2O!”. “what does that mean yah blethering child?” Robert said with distain. “It’s an ol mermaid show from round 2000 anyway you need to come back home and we need to return tha crown”.

Robert shook his head forlornly “canne do that the shell that got fused is stuck ya ken?”. Sheila tapped her dad’s arm with the back of her hand “pa! use your computer stick we can try soundwaves to break the shell we need to find the right frequency!” Kerry nodded his head and pressed a button which extended a small screen from the side of his cane. Kerry and Sheila then proceeded to fidget and fiddle with settings and a multitude of other things trying at leas 20 different sound frequencies and once they found the right one the sound not only shattered the paua shell bit the glass of the stand it was on and rang through out the whole castle.

After the horrible din from the cell a multitude of fae guards and alchemists rushed in to see the shell now shattered and the crown now free. Great shouts of celebration filled the halls as the three humans were escorted to the throne room of Nicnevin. Kerry and Robert (with great strain on Robert’s part) gave back the crown to the great fae queen. “On me brother an the rest of me clan’s behalf we ask forgiveness for the transgression against ya”. Nicnevin looked upon the three of them with a calculated gaze “as the transgression is now put right your whole clan now has their selkie DNA unlocked and you three are free to go”. With a wave of her hand a faint string popped in Robert and Kerry and with that they bowed in gratitude.

As Kerry and Sheila were leaving with a very disgruntled Robert in tow Nicnevin came up to Sheila. “wee barin to thank ye for returning me crown an getting rid of yer lavvy heid of an uncle and for what you have done for us yer necklace is now a help beacon for yer clan here in Elfhame ”. Before Robert was dragged into the cave he let out one last insult with a cocky grin “ey queenie ye got a face lit a melted welly!” and Nicnevin replied with “oh oan yer trolley ya fucking weapon!”.

And as the three of them come out of the tunnel reaching the mortal world again Kerry takes out his phone and promptly calls his parents to instantly hand the phone to Robert and get them to keep an eye on him and probably give him an earful for his actions.

The trip back to Canberra compared to the whole holiday was uneventful the food was good and no huge hassle with luggage claim. “I'll go get yo some snacks while we wait for the bags an the jo maxi” Sharon Sheila’s mum said as she went to a vending machine.

Once the family gets home from their trip Sheila notices a flyer in the mailbox advertising the Bean Army needing people to man their proxy army in Australia. “Pop have a look at this!” Sheila says as she shows her dad the flyer and the next day Sheila, Kerry along with Sheila’s best friend Sezi and her boyfriend Alexis all went to sign up and the rest is history.

Trip to Skye: part 5

As the bubbles swarmed her to the point of them converging into one bubble and once the bubble eventually popped Sheila looked at herself in shock.

Exasperatedly she soundlessly questioned what, how, why, yikes.

After ten minutes of floundering around she remembered she had to get back to the inn so she looked for a way to get back onto land and where the quay was there was a nice slope she could slump back on. Sheila then saw a skateboard that was presumably left by one of the three or four young teens who called this town home so she used said skateboard to drag herself to the inn. After a painfully long 15 minutes of crawling along belly down on a skateboard she got to the inn. debating if she should try to get inside or stay by the nearby local pool Sheila chose the latter in the hope that someone left a towel so she could attempt to dry herself off and maybe get her legs back like that one tv show now what was it called it was some sort of science name but it had mermaids ah whatever. After another arduous five minutes she was in luck someone did indeed leave a towel at the pool so she started to furiously scrub her tail when suddenly she froze as the gate that was connected to the inn opened. Now guess who is coming through that gate Steve Irwin? Nope. Ed Sheeran? In your dreams. Sheila's dad Kerry? Ding ding give that person a prize.

As soon as Kerry looked up he shook his head. "I tol' ye not tae go to tha castle lass" he said with disappointment thick in his time as he hobbles over to Sheila and pinches her *caudal fin which reverts Sheila into her normal human form. Sheila's clothes we're surprisingly dry but a little tattered since the initial pull into the water was a bit faster than she registered. "Okay bloody how? what? Pa?" Thoroughly confused she looked to her dad for answers. "Sheila it's late yer knackered sleep we'll talk about this in thae morn now up tae bed" and Sheila agreed with a million questions still flying through her brain. The next morning Sheila noticed that both her parents let her sleep in but eh she wasn't complaining. As she got ready she mentally compiled a list of questions in her brain and once she got down to the main part of the inn for a late breakfast she saw her dad sitting on the couch usually used to I guess watch the sports. Kerry looked up and gently patted the empty spot on the couch next to him so Sheila nervously walked over and sat down.

“mah wee lass I know ya wan’ed tah learn ‘bout yer history, clan-wise an it seems ya dived head first inta it literally.” Kerry said thoughtfully making sure he picked his words carefully. “an well ya see Sheila mah part of tha family was mixed in with tha wyrd.” Kerry continued while ashamedly rubbing the back of his neck. “pop what doya mean by Weird?” Sheila questioned “Wyrd nae Weird it means maegical or supernatural so long story short one ancestor was a *changeling an neaver was discoverd until aefter he had passed and already faethered many children”. Sheila thought for a while and nearly had connected all the dots “so if I hava changeling grandpop how come I can turn intoa dang guppy?” Sheila inquisitively said. “weal that changeling was of tha selkie fair folk so his descendants coul be human on lan an mermaid in tha sea but that changed tanks to your uncle Robert”. Kerry then rambled on about the whole story of how uncle Dick stole the Crown of Nicnevin who is the queen of the fairies and tried to blasphemously merge it with the shell in which the changeling ancestor became after death. This mystical blasphemy locked the selkie gene for his generation, all generations previous and all generations continuing and everyone was banished from the clan’s castle.

(Translation: caudal fin= the fin at the bottom of the tail, knackered= tired, changeling= fairy child put in place of a stolen human child often an ancient explanation for autism and ADHD and often neglected in attempt to “get their real child back”, Selkie= a type of mermaid and fairy that can appear human on land but are a mermaid in the water)

Trip to Skye: Part 4

In the morning the three of them were silent over the breakfast of toast, fried eggs, a little haggis, a sausage, fried mushrooms, bacon and some fried tomatoes. Sheila's mum had her nose in the local paper's sudoku while Kerry pensively stirred his cup of tea. Once Sheila finished her breakfast she started wandering around the town but she stopped just outside the local library. As she entered this sanctuary of knowledge she had a good look around and surprisingly found lots of original manuscripts from when the English Christans tried to convert the town.

Sheila poured through the books that she guessed connected to her family such titles being "Albanian myths", "Celtic Mythology" and "Caledonian myths". The list also included aquatic things as her last name being McLoch one could deduce it had something fishy about it so "Mermaids", "Mythology Oceania", "Encyclopedia Aquatica", "Fair Folk of the Foam" and "Pictish Oceans". As Sheila peruses the books she finds some footnotes mentioning a Mildred Mclofghd she guessed as there was a huge ink splotch. She also finds a mythological story about shape changing shells. After she finished looking through the "Encyclopedia Aquatica" she notices it is a recent print and there are a lot of bibliographical references to an American based, bean themed volunteer group. After spending the morning at the library Sheila goes to the local market with her mum cause well they are on holiday and this was part of the plan so they have a wander around. "So I know tha start of tis trip as been quite minus craic specially wit yer pa eating yer head off tis mornin, you know he did nah mean to get mad at ya" Sharon says as she looks through triquerta pendant necklaces "I know ma but I really hoped pa would be cool about it, all he has told me about my rellies is that their Scottish and they're from this castle" Sheila steams as she looks over the T-shirts then after using her fidget cube to calm down Sheila and her mum grab some lunch. The rest of the day goes uneventful until the evening where Sheila sneaks out again to the castle McLoch. She finds the dingy and goes back to the cave and as Sheila investigates the area around the pool but she magnetically is called closer to the pool and when she dips her hand into the water this time she does not faint and she then immerses herself into the water and once was fully underwater the pull to the pool stops and she starts to freak out but a bubble layer around her prevents her from moving and keeps building around her till she can't feel her body.

Trip to Skye: Part 3

(Writer's note: I'm really sorry this took so long to do greif hit me like a truck more than I would care to admit and with Has Bean being a physical and personality wise replica of my late dad it was effortful to draw anything for the bean army in all honesty heh anyway back to the story finally)

Sheila had to carefully hide the dingy in almost the exact same area she found it in before sneaking back to the inn in the near pitch black of the small scottish town's roads this late at night with only the glow of the lamplights and the sparkle of the stars as her light source. Once she got to the inn again she as carefully as she could she clambered up to the inn room window but as she climbed back through the window closed too loudly and it woke up her parents. Sharon woke up a little then whent back to sleep but Sheila's dad Kerry though stayed up. 'Sheila why are ye climbing through tha window in tha wee hours of tha morning? And why do ye smell like the loch?' Kerry says sternly. Sheila starts to wring her hands and she can't look her dad in his eye 'I have an explanation I needed anathar socket converta so fair dinkum I whent to the serv-o and I fell into a puddle but I dried meh clothes quickly?'. Kerry sighed and shook his head 'Barin tis nearly tha witching hour get some sleep we will talk about it in tha morning' 'okay pa' Sheila goes to bed. The next morning all was calm until Sheila came down to the table in the tavern part of the inn. The air was so tense between Sheila and her dad in the silence that someone could play it like a guitar string. Once Sheila had eaten her breakfast Kerry stood up and with a stern voice he said 'i know you whent to castle McLoch last night yeh shouldn't've gone there'.

Sheila stood up and faced her dad 'yeah but pa why haven't you ever tol' me about my heritage?' Sheila asked confrontingly. 'I have reasons buh yeh shouldn't've gone tah tha castle on tha farst place. I tol' ye multiple times not tae go there!' Kerry told his daughter as he shook a disappointed finger at her. Sharon was visibly uncomfortable so she stood up and went to the tea and coffee station in the tavern 'I'll get thae tea and shortbread sah ye can talk this over calmly A srórtha' she got a small plate of freshly baked shortbread cookies and started a cup of mint tea for Sheila and two cups of earl grey for herself and Kerry. 'ye shouldn't've gone ye could've gotten hurt or taken' Kerry said firmly as he placed his free hand on his hip as Sheila stood up tall and firm. 'Dad I am old enough to have my P's back in Australia if that isn't proof enough that Imma responsible I ain't no drongo an i have neva had a run in with the coppers and i have defo never done anything like this before, I just wanna know about my rellies' Sheila sighs 'I'm out don't expect me back till the arvo' she guzzles down the mint tea her mum got for her then Sheila stomps out of the inn and goes walk about around the small town. After like four hours she comes back to the inn and slumps onto her bed in the inn room and starts to draw some vent art. An hour later Kerry notices Sheila sitting on her bed and he knocks on the wall. 'Hey 're you okay?' Kerry carefully asks Sheila 'yeah I'm right just needed that walkabout to clear my emotions' she responded quickly. Kerry looks at his feet with guilt 'Hey, I'm sorry I know you want tae know but it's not the righ time yet'.

Sheila stares daggers at her dad 'when will it be?' Kerry looks at his daughter gently 'I don know when it is thae time anyway get some sleep big day tomorrow'.

(A srórtha = it means a lot of things but in this context it means my treasures. P's= p plates an intermediary licence level in Australia in between a learner licence and a full licence drongo= idiot defo= definitely rellies= relatives )

Trip to Skye: Part 2

Kerry, Sheila and Sheila's mum Sharon arrive in Scotland at the Glasgow International airport. Sheila texts Alexis to let him know that she got there safe. after she does they collect their bags from the luggage claim and go to rent a car up to the Isle of Skye with Sharon at the wheel. “Hey Pa seeing that we’re in Scotland can you tell me about the clan now?” Sheila asks as Kerry sighs and replies reluctantly “do ya remember tha stories we told you as a barin?” “About faeries and banshees and such?” Sheila asks thinking back on her childhood bedtime stories as Kerry nods his head solemnly “those stories are tied very close to the land and the culture”. Sheila suddenly goes quiet in awe of the beautiful and rugged Scottish landscape as Sharon whispers to Kerry “we‘re staying in the village around your clan’s castle is tat okay A ghrá?” Kerry nods “yes mo leannan yer know tat we are forbidden tah enter tha castle” “yes dear” Sharon said trustingly.

The rest of the trip is quiet as the McLoch castle can be seen in the distance and Sheila is awestruck in the majesty of the castle.

The three of them go to the inn and settle in their rooms and after dinner they settle down to sleep. Sheila though was up later and chatting to Alexis and once it passed midnight Sheila senses a strange energy coming from far off. ‘There’s something strange happening I better go check it out I love you honey bear’ Alexis’ response message is 'stay safe my love😚’. Sheila checks for a while around the town in the dark of the night and finds a small dingy as she senses the energy coming from near the castle. She sails out and just under the bridge on the castle side she finds a glowing pool in a small cave. She reaches out to touch the water like she was magnetically drawn to it but faints as soon as she touches it. 4 hours later she wakes up and her phone is full of worried messages from her boyfriend 'I’m ok there’s justa weird pool near the castle I’m heading back to tha inn now’ she sends back. On the trip back over she accidentally capsizes the dingy she struggles a little and then finds out she can suddenly breathe underwater, the freezing waters aren’t affecting her and her clothes are completely dry. “Bloody hell what on this blue earth is blooming happening just um WHAT?!?! She is petrified for a bit and just floats there as she is shaking and then swims back up to the surface to find the boat. She tries to put it back where she found it and sneaks back into the inn as she plays with her fidget cube to calm her nerves and she meditates a little to find answers. Trip to Skye: part 1

Sheila and her dad Kerry are almost done packing their bags for a trip to The Isle of Skye which is where Kerry was born and raised. He walks into the living room which has a few bags scattered all over with the tickets and passports spread out on the table ‘This Trip is gonna be awesome thanks pa’ Sheila says 'It was actually yer moom’s idea she wanted tah show ya the places we grew up’ Kerry replies with a little apprehension. ‘so dad are ya gonna tell the history of your side of the mob finally on this trip? Or is that gonna stay secretive?’ Sheila asks as she closes her suitcase and puts it next to the rest. ‘well lass seeing that we are going to me hometown I might as well tell you our history but only when we get t’ere’. Kerry stuffs his last few things into his bag and struggles to close it ‘looks like your bag’s chock a block here lemme help’ she sits ontop of the bag and zips it up ‘there ya go dad now where’s ma?’

A woman walks into the room ‘I’m right here A leanbh and the taxi is right outside we better be goin’. Sheila looks up and then has the shocked face of realisation ‘ah blast I forgot to say bye to Alexis’ ‘tell ‘im I say hi’ Sharon says as she walks across the room to give her daughter a small hug ‘yes mum’. Sheila sends her boyfriend this text “the taxi is here about to go to the Isle of Skye I will text you when the plane lands and I hope to see you in one piece when I get back my dear. And ma and pa say hi” and he responds with “safe travels my love and hi back to them too” Sheila smiles and then follows her parents into the taxi and head off to the Airport.

‘Wow’ Sheila exclaims as the plane flies over the ocean ‘first plane ride and it is awesome fair dinkum’ Kerry lies back grumbling ‘I hope mah clan don’t make this trip rotten’. (A leanbh = my child)
