Superman desperately scanning the street during a fight to find the most morally acceptable car to throw at his opponent, knowing that not everybody has insurance, and loss of transportation can ruin a life -
A wave of incredible relief washes over him as he spots the hard geometric lines and silver paintless sheen of a Cybertruck.
the gist of this idea me and @khyeili have been screwing around with is that tony is having a bad time. everyone thinks he's transphobic now just because he's deeply annoyed by captain america

The Avengers 2012 era was the best time ever in the fandom
Thor loves pop tarts, Clint lived in the vents, Bruce and Tony did science together, Steve was the mom friend of the team and did art in his free time, Natasha was cool aunt of the team, Loki was there too and a bunch of other characters like Peter, Sam, Bucky, Vision and Wanda all lived in the Avengers tower together
It was a much simpler time where everyone in the fandom was chill and having fun together
This was like the Pokémon Go summer for fandom
oh no steve you look cute
sry to step back from the ai stuff and ask a more fundamental question but what do you mean about both art only mattering in the interplay betwwn work and reader and the stuff about how displaying something turns it into Art?
Like yeah ik both of those points are like super common things artists say but Ive only ever seen them deployed as like a way to shut down Outsiders trying to ask questions ive nerver understood what they actually mean
you see a toilet in a bathroom, you think "thats a toilet". you see a toilet on a plinth in an art gallery, you think "what's that doing there?" and then, if you are able to get past a knee-jerk rejection of 'THATS NOT ART WHATS IT DOING IN THE ART BUILDING', you think things like "what differentiates art objects from other objects? someone made this toilet, after all. it's mass produced, but prints can be mass produced, and they're still art. is a toilet that is being displayed different to one i am meant to use? what do i feel when i see a toilet randomly in the middle of a room while walking around an art gallery, that i don't feel when i see it in a bathroom when i'm going to take a piss?" & so on... the object has not changed, but your reaction to it has, and so it has become meaningfully different!
think, for example, of the aesthetics of a game like super mario brothers for the nes:
for many people, looking at the game or listening to its soundtrack evokes nostalgia -- a feeling of lost childhood innocence. but in 1985, the game's graphics and chiptunes were exciting, novel -- they weren't 'retro' or 'nostalgic' to anyone, they were cutting edge and flashy! this is the same for any aesthetic that can now be considered 'retro', right, stuff like miami vice wasn't conceived of as 'super 80s' while the 80s were still happening.
and of course, for some people there is no personal context for super mario brothers and its aesthetics -- some people were born long after games looked like this, some people didn't have a home console or were too old for video games at the time or lived in places where the game and console weren't available. none of them will be nostalgic for super mario brothers for the nes, they will come to its aesthetics with different contexts or no context at all, and the feelings they stir will be completely different on that basis. and the object itself doesn't have to change, only the context around it and the experiences and perspective of the person engaging with it as a text!
if you're someone who'd been watching marvel movies since 2008, avengers endgame is the cinematic event of a lifetime -- the culmination of dozens of character arcs you've gotten invested in across hours of movies and years of real-world time. you cheer when thor picks up mjolnir and you cry when tony stark dies. these are characters who mean something to you because of the time and emotions you've invested in: every time a character does their thing in the big climax, it feels like a payoff for their whole onscreen history. it's a masterpiece. sometimes it pisses you off that people don't get it because they don't understand the context.
if you're someone who's kind of kept up with marvel movies, but it's not, like, a thing for you -- avengers: endgame is a pretty good action flick. you like the special effects, robert downey junior gives a good performance. you laugh at fat thor (it's funny because he's fat), you enjoy the fight scenes. three hours drags a bit, though, and there's not a lot of images that stick with you afterwards. decent popcorn flick, though, and something to talk about with your coworkers on your smoke break. your friend you watched it with, who's super into comics but ambivalent on the MCU, says it's really cool how they referenced rocket raccoon and ant-man's comic outfits, but keeps bringing up how they 'totally ruined thanos' and think they should have kept the thing where he's in love with Death.
if you're martin scorcese, award-winning director, you're disappointed by the fact that this is what everyone wants you to talk about -- you think it's more like a theme park than cinema, a product manufactured for consumption that lacks the ability to expand horizons, the aesthetic sharpness, the mystery and revelation that you think makes cinema cinema. and you think it's a shame that this seems to be the only thing that can get play on the big screen anymore, and then it becomes a subject of annoyance as every interviewer insists on bringing it up when you think you've been pretty clear about what you meant.
all of these people, yknow, to them the same thing is on screen. the same collection of images being played in very fast sequence to create the illusion of motion -- but in a meaningful sense, right, they have watched different movies, they are engaging with those images in completely different ways that lead them to completely different conclusions. when thor picks up his hammer, you're ecstatic, or you're hopeful that means there'll be another action scene soon, or you're thinking about how a better version of this was executed in a comic run from the 90s, or you're bored. & it is in this range of reactions that the art exists at all -- if you played the scene to an empty theater, nobody would think anything about it, it would have no impact or meaning: it would not exist.
We are hitting peak bird migration season in the United States with hundreds of millions of birds making their way north this weekend. Artificial light can be extremely confusing and disorienting for these birds as they migrate! Please make sure to “go dark” and turn off any unnecessary lights around your home. Your avian neighbors are counting on you to help them on this perilous journey. Lights out this weekend!
Bird migration forecast map is from BirdCast, where you can find more information and live updates.

We have 30 days until the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) laws are rescinded. This is the 50-year bedrock of American conservation. Normally, these actions take years but the administration has provided 30 days for public comment gutting clean water and clean air. Drop what you’re doing, before you make any more calls or read any more social media posts, please populate the Federal Register with dissent.
A. Go to https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/02/25/2025-03014/removal-of-national-environmental-policy-act-implementing-regulations
B. Click on the green rectangle in the upper right corner ("SUBMIT A PUBLIC COMMENT") .
C. Fill in your comment, and info at the bottom, and SUBMIT COMMENT.
I just did that (2/27/2025), and the message on that website said:
The comment period ends March 27, not March 30!!!
I strongly suggest (in your own words) couching your dissent in Trump's (and followers') own rhetoric. Here's what I said:
Removing these regulations will make America sick again, cause neurological and intellectual impairment in children (due to less regulation of lead), and raise the level of preventable cancers in adults (due to less regulation of known carcinogens),thus reducing American productivity and greatness.
Done! It took me two seconds.

When Donald Trump reentered office, one of his first calls to action was to end several DEI initiatives in the federal government.
'This won't work, this isn't widespread, nobody knows, we're in a bubble, blah blah blah' my mom, a 64 year old lady with no social media whose first language is spanish, told me about this before tumblr did, and said we are going to participate.
I've seen flyers for this in real life. Do it.
The fact that they could’ve used ANY OTHER WORD to describe their very first interaction and yet the writer chose to use “caress” speaks volumes about Symbrock me thinks.
