Imagine that Eridians grow with age, so when Rocky first left Erid, Adrian was around the same size as them, but now coming back all these years later Rocky reunites with Adrian and they're now like three times the size of Rocky. (the wonders of time dilation)

Rock doing the equivalent of blushing furiously and swooning like "omg... my mate is so so so beautiful."

Also imagine that they never stop growing until death, so maybe by the time they reach 600-and-something and die of old age, they're MASSIVE.

So an old Eridian will just lumber off a ways, sit down, and pass on. and boom. they're a mountain now. That's a mountain.

Rocky leads Grace to two towering mountains and points up at them like "look look look! These were Rocky's parents!"

Grace is both horrified and amused to realise that a more accurate translation for what Rocky’s been saying is “shit shit shit”.

I have other fic to finish. I know this. I KNOW this.

But . . .

Imagine on the trip to Erid, Grace is starving to death and they are trying to keep the tauomeba alive but also not eating the fuel and then they need to ensure they don't die due to space radiation and in the middle of it all the Starship Enterprise shows up.

Captain Kirk and crew were heading to Vulcan (the Eridani system) and suddenly they are technically in the same point in space but this isn't their time and this isn't even their reality. There are moments of concern that this may be bearded!Spock mirror universe stuff but then the ship nearly runs into the Hail Mary.

And Spock will be all "Captain, think of the Prime Directive/Temporal Directive" and also "I don't recognize what they are using as fuel but it is fascinating and there appear to be two life forms and one is very weak and human."

So screw the Temporal Directive and the Prime Directive. They reach out to the ship (the human is starving to death, the other species is like if a Horta grew legs and started singing in multi chord harmony). Bones is not having it. ("Scurvy? SCURVY? And what's this? Beriberi?! Why is there no food or vitamins on this ship? Did they send you out here to die?! This is medieval!) Grace gets treated and brought back to optimal health. ("Thank! Thank! Thank!" Rocky keeps chanting, rolling back and forth at the doctor's feet.) Scotty and Spock are eager to get their hands on the astrophage and the astrophage drive. Uhura is enthralled with the Eridian language and Grace's attempt at a dictionary/translator. Kirk finding out all about Project Hail Mary and Grace's decision to save Erid is deeply impressed (it takes a lot to impress James Kirk but Grace has absolutely met and exceeded the bar-- talk about a no win situation!)

And then . . . I mean the Enterprise has to be returned to its time but maybe they stock up the ship with food before they leave and the entire crew is enthralled with what did evolve in place of the Vulcans they know and love (if you've read the novel Spock's World you know that there is a possible tie there with the Eridians and mountains and rocks in general). And . . . help me out here. I've got an incomplete daydream that I need to flesh out a bit more for it to be really satisfying. What does Grace think about all this? What about Rocky? Do they patch him up too?

Kirk's answer to the question of, "What do you do in a no-win scenario?" is "I break the rules until it isn't a no-win scenario. I don't give up on my crew, and I do whatever I can to save as many lives as possible."

So I’ve seen a few “Grace time travels” fics (and absolutely loved them!) but it got me thinking - what about Rocky?

Rocky, whose age difference means that he’s sent back pre-mission to before Grace was even born.

So he protects his crew from the radiation, gets the Taumoeba, and once their sun is fixed, heads out to Earth.

And so, just as the Hail Mary project is in full swing, a giant-ass spaceship appears in Earth’s orbit, releases SOMETHING to the sun that stops the Petrova line, then communicates in English(??!!??) that in thanks, it wants to meet One Scientist In Particular.

Which then leads to two branching options:

Grace didn’t timetravel

Stratt: What the fuck did you do??!?

Grace: I don’t know! I’m just a teacher???

Grace DID timetravel

Stratt: huh. Guess you didn’t actually go crazy…

Grace: OMG YAY bestie’s here!!!

phm time travel au where the mission failed. Grace is killed trying to get the taumeoba, Rocky left alone knowing solution but unable to get it, bad bad bad. Only, now armed with the knowledge of time and space warp but not knowing enough to know what impossible and eridian tech and desperation and NEEDING GRACE BACK, figures out time travel. Rocky ends up at the point right after when Eridians launched Blip-A bc something something that’s where his spatial journet started. Has a break down about his crew being alive. calls a thrum to slam everyone else with lots of Earth science. Cancel launch and make heavy revisions to Blip A. Modified first and foremost for radiation protection, then fishing, then splitting teams between return and diplomatic mission to earth.

Adrian is deeeeeply concerned about their partner. Rocky is very different, hyper and twitchy and manic. They’re the only one who can coax him to actually talk about Grace because usually just send him panicked working. Rocky doesn’t know how to stop anymore. He’s terrified of stopping after so many years alone. After watching so many stop and never start again.

Nobody is quite sure if Rocky is altogether…sane. Sure the unfathomable science keeps checking out. but his speech is so simple and tonally bizarre, he has this ineridian mannerisms, he’s constantly ordering people around and snapping and flinching. He’s not the Rocky they knew only weeks ago.

It takes a few years to make a second ship. Rocky gets more and more anxious. And when Adrian suggests that maybe he shouldn’t be going up again alone, he absolutely freaks out and barely processes their clarification that they want to go with him.

everyone is relieved. They’re all concerned about him and a little on edge.But of course none is more relieved than Rocky. He has the best mate.

Over the many years of the flight Adrian gets him a bit calmer, there is improvement when the radiation protection work and send off taumeoba. Sharing stories of Grace tends to help. Adrian learns so much about their mate’s odd leaky space best friend and comes to love him so much. They design his biodome to perfection, and daydream of all the additions they’ll implement with real earth biota.

Smash cut many many years. Earth has started to panic about the Petrova line, in the very very early stages of starting Projevt Hail Mary. And suddenly this HUGE alien space ship appears. And this swarm of stone spiders comes out. With a … record player made of never before seen materials. And in freaking English it says:

<We come in peace statement. Take us to your Ryland Grace order>

And noooohing else. Cause once they have Grace translating is solved! Cue a very terrified middle school teacher getting kidnapped by the CIA in the middle of the night. Interrogated for everything he knows about aliens and given no answers, best Grace can tell is this ?? Might be about his theory on non water life forms ?? Is this about the Petrova line?????

Rocky is getting more and more antsy, hes so very excited and they’re making him wait rude rude rude. Adrian is so ready to finally meet the amazing Grace, frankly all the Eridians are super interested and are having a ball -heh literally- being on such a light planet, wanting to explore while human security is very very antsy about the aliens want. Adrian keeps politely tapping Rocky to translate to the rest since he’s the one who can actually speak human. Rocky is rather disinterested in struggling to communicate with the humans because inefficient when just get Grace. He makes it clear he understands them…he just only responds by repeating the recording exasperatedly and the occasional thumbs down.

which uh….hm. Gives the world governments a very skewed understanding of what the Eridians want. Do they know what astrophage/star dim is? No? Alright. And get skittish from exchanges like, I dunno, asking if they’re unarmed and getting a thumbs down and another demand for Grace.

Rocky has been waiting decades to see his best friend again. And the moment he does? Immediately tackles and hugs him, pressing as close as he can while not crushing the fragile leaky space blob. The cool, soft press of his body against the xenonite, pulsing with breath, eases the crystal clear memory of his broken dead body. It’s okay. He’s okay. So Rocky’s okay.

Grace is crying. Of course he is. This is Rocky’s precious leaky space blob, he’d expect nothing less. Rocky wraps all five arms around his Grace, who’s shaking. Who’s not returning the hug. Who’s breaking on his sobs. Who’s struggling to breathe.

Who’s quietly begging not to be killed.

Cause for Grace, he just got kidnapped by the government, interrogated, told to walk into a room with lethal aliens, held at gunpoint when he tried to run, and then got immediately tackled and surrounded by a swarm of aliens. Cowards aren’t BUILT for that sorta pressure.

Rocky starts having a break down. Well, started having one since Grace died, but this is the culmination of it. Is human memory that bad? No. No, Grace would never forget him.

But Grace was made to forget before, wasn’t he?

Grace absolved humanity before, balanced the world against his life and was forced to admit it was worth it. Doing this to Rocky’s best friend twice?? They don’t deserve Grace. No. They don’t deserve grace.

For the sake of his best friend’s love for his home, Rocky still leaves them the Taumoeba. But the humans can figure it out on their own. Rocky squeezes around the hyperventilating human a little too tight, and drags him aboard the ship. Grace scrambles as he’s forced into the human safe enclosure Adrian designed. It’s perfectly comfortable. Horrifically familiar. As in, filled with things he owns. Literally wearing the same joke tee shirt as laid out on the approximation of a bed.

Trembling, Grace picks up the little knit Earth set out for him. The same one that’s in his classroom right now.

“What- what is this? How long have you been- stalking me?”

The brown alien that attacked him presses against the glass. It sings to him, low and soft.

Grace drops to his knees and cowers when the engines rumble and the alien ship initiates take off.

Meet RISE

I keep seeing people mention how cute it is that the Artemis crew is playing with a plushie but I really want this little boy to get his flowers too!! Lucas Ye, an 8 year old from California, designed this plushie by hand. He won a contest, beating out thousands, to create the zero gravity indicator the crew would take on board to show the world they hit zero G.

I just know somewhere he’s watching the live streams or interviews and has the biggest smile on his face!! How awesome to see something you handmade end up in space being bopped around on a historic mission and doing endless cartwheels right in front of the entire world. I hope he’s the happiest kid right now! 🥹 I’m so happy and proud of him!!
