“So, uhhh, bad news, boss,” Solomon tried to keep the tone light, though that might not actually have been the best idea. His own nerves raced as he took a deep breath, trying to get the words out. He opened and shut his jaw several times before he finally managed to confess. “Sofia ran off.” He winced, bracing himself for Eddy to explode on him. Rightfully so.

“fuck,” eddy said a beat too late, solomon’s words sinking in too slowly. sofia ran off all the time, it wasn’t that big of a deal, but considering the size of this event and the fact that eddy couldn’t see her, he knew this time was different. “where was the last place you saw her?” he asked, trying to keep his cool as his head whipped around in each and every direction, eyes searching for the face of his little girl.

☆.*｡･ﾟ task seventeen → social media.

eddy’s social media profiles are 98% pictures of sofia and 2% bad memes he finds unironically funny. i mean, like, full on minion memes. posted and liked completely seriously. most of the time, though, he lives his life off of social media, not wanting to give too much weight to something he feels ultimately doesn’t matter.

( @hcrdloves​ ) Solomon’s head bobbed over the crowd in panic, but no matter how far he searched, he couldn’t see that tiny mop of curls anywhere. The longer the clock ticked on, the higher his anxiety spiked, and he was tied to the flagpole as the marker until Eddy arrived. Honestly, though, maybe he should just leave. Avoid the confrontation. He was not looking forward to telling Eddy why he had to call him here.

eddy had been looking forward the skipping the fall festival entirely, but sofia had insisted on going. lucky for him, cape hazel had come with a sort of built-in babysitter in the form of solomon matua, and he was able to relax at home instead of chasing after a kid hopped up on too much sugar all day. that was, until, of course, he got a phone call. “so, why am i here again?” he asked as he approached solomon, his nerves settling in as he waited for sofia’s signature squeal of a greeting, but didn’t hear it.

— “Call me if this happens again, I’ll happily sucker punch the guy,” Ira jested, “or you know, have him step on a Lego.” On the topic of Judge Dredd, he couldn’t help but add, “Did you go as Dredd for Karen’s Halloween event?” Recalling every costume he’s seen during said event, he couldn’t remember setting his eyes on the familiar helmet. “I wouldn’t mind a free beer, I’m your man.” Ira declared, grinning and looking around once more.  “You’ve got any dustpan and broom I could use?”

“i’ll keep that in mind,” eddy laughed, shaking his head at ira’s next question. “i went as gomez addams, but i didn’t get to stay for too long. dredd’s a good idea for next year, though,” he said, reaching behind the bar to grab a spare broom and pan, handing it over to his friend gladly. the bar was a mess, and he needed it cleaned as soon as possible if he wanted to keep his damn job.

Swinging his feet back and forth underneath the counter, Solomon wriggled in the chair to find a comfortable position. No luck! So he continued to fidget as he chatted with Eddy. “It’s a compliment, that’s all you need to know. We had a holiday today, so I thought I’d stop by and visit my good pal Eddy D. What’s with you?”

eddy watched solomon as he began to fidget and wriggle around the bar, a small smile on his face. the kid’s mannerisms were so familiar to him now, even if eddy didn’t quite understand half the things he said sometimes. “it’s been a fuckin’ shit day, kiddo,” he explained, a sigh escaping him, “but that doesn’t mean we can’t make it any better. you after a drink or anything?”

“Yikes. What a douche.” Maia said easing herself down at the bar. “I would ask for an alcohol but I can’t.” She said forgetting she was only twenty.

“i’d say fuck it and give you one anyway, but i kinda need to keep this job,” eddy said with a laugh, cleaning off the rest of the bar, “can i get you a coke or something? some orange juice?”

“hey, man,” jace said, extending his arm to eddy for a friendly handshake. “i’ve missed you, dude. been in new york, only came back to cape hazel… mm, maybe two weeks ago?” he took a seat on the barstool he always sat at when he came to visit eddy. “if he comes back, let me know and i’ll scare him off for you.”

eddy gladly took jace’s hand for a shake, smiling wide as he told him where he’d been. he’d missed his friend, but new york was an exciting feat. “that’s fuckin’ awesome, dude, you get up to much up there?” he asked, leaning over with elbows on the bar. he shook off jace’s offer to scare off his terrible customer, though, laughing softly as he did so. “think i did a good enough job of scaring him off myself,” he joked, “i don’t think we’ll be seeing him again.”

— “Just kicked the guy out? Eddy, that’s kind of you,” Ira joked, adding, “You are a good guy, and I fucking mean it.” Walking towards the bar, he situated himself near the countertop, elbow on the surface. “Innit, yeah?” Nodding, he sets the blu-ray down and points at it. “It has your name on it—well, you can’t see it. But it has Eddy de León stamped all over it.” Ira got it from a garage sale, a lucky buy. “Do you need help cleaning up, by the way?” He offered, looking over the counter.

“i can’t exactly get into a bar fight in the bar i work at, you know? every other one in town is fair game, though,” eddy said with a grin, graciously taking the compliment ira offered. he took the blu-ray into his hands then, turning the cover over to look at it properly while ira talked. “thanks, man, this is fuckin’ amazing. we’ll have to break it in together,” he said, eyes then darting towards the mess on the bar. “i could use some help. there’s a free beer in it for ya, too.”

Solomon raised an eyebrow at Eddy, amused by the harsh look in his eye and tone in his voice. “Whoa, who got on your bad side, Zaddy? I wouldn’t wanna be them. Except that was kinda hot, so maybe I would.” Solomon grinned as he hopped up the bar, legs swinging as he settled into the stool.

eddy broke out into a grin when he realised it was just solomon, something about the laidback nature of the kid immediately relaxing him despite the day he’d had. “do i even wanna know what zaddy means?” he asked, wiping down the bar before looking back up at solomon, “what’re you doing here in the middle of the day, anyway?”

— “Back here to start shit again?” Ira parroted, arching an eyebrow and looking around, towards the door. “Was someone here—this early?” His hackles are up, worried for Eddy and angry at the asshole who dare start something, at this hour. “That’s old-school,” said Ira, pointing at the broken glass in Eddy’s hand. “Everything alright?” He followed, holding up his other hand, blu-ray case between his fingers. “Judge Dredd Steelbook Edition thought you might get a kick out of it.”

eddy relaxed again once he realised it was ira making himself known in the bar. he wasn’t ready to deal with anyone else after what had just happened, but ira was a calming presence, someone he could be at peace around. “some asshole day-drinker thought it’d be hilarious to come in here looking for a fight,” he explained, rolling his eyes, “i managed to kick him out but he broke a couple of glasses.” with that, he threw the broken piece of glass in the trash, turning his full attention to what ira had in his hands instead. “holy shit, dude, that’s fuckin’ sick,” he said with a grin.

jace had just popped into sullivan’s to say a quick hello to eddy. he felt like he hadn’t seen the man in a while and just wanted to say hi, catch up. the mood quickly turned sour as he walked in, eddy snapping at him immediately. “whoa, man. what happened?”

“shit, jace, man, where’ve you been?” eddy asked with a grin, his mood on the increase now that he was in familiar, comfortable company. the last guy to walk through those doors had ruined his day, but jace was more than welcome. “some kid looking for trouble. just a dickhead who’d had too much to drink, really.”

“Jesus Christ.” Maia said, leaning her head back trying to show she’s not a threat to him. “I’d hate to make you that upset.” Her head still leaning. “Who were you talking about anyway?”

eddy cringed a little when the identity of his new patron fully registered with him. the last thing he’d want to do was scare of the clerk of his favorite bakery, but lucky for him, she seemed pretty unfazed by his outburst. “sorry about that,” he said, busying himself with cleaning down the bar, “some guy came in looking for trouble. threw a couple of glasses around for no reason.”

“if you’re back here to start shit again, you can get the fuck out of my ba—“ eddy started, voice raised over the music as he turned around upon hearing the door open, dirty and broken glass in hand. it wasn’t until it was too late that he realised he’d gotten the wrong person. “sorry, thought you were someone else. anything i can do for you?”

“You’re just jealous,” Solomon sang, his twinkling eyes the only sign of life in his body. Once he lost his momentum, everything in him seemed to cramp up, and he put all his energy into sitting still rather than keeling over in pain. He couldn’t give Eddy the satisfaction. “Sofia, isn’t it a shame your dad is so jealous of me, a superhero?”

“why would i be jealous?” eddy asked, his tone and expression completely showing his jealousy. he wasn’t sure he was jealous of solomon’s supposed talent, but more so the fact that the kid seemed to be holding up a lot better than he was. he let out another groan when sofia cheered solomon on, though, the sting of betrayal hurting even worse than the pain in his intestines. “don’t bring my daughter into this,” he joked, “that’s too far.”

danxfowler‌:

daniel doesn’t always admit that he sacrificed fun for his duties, always the first to rush in and say that there’s nothing like it happening. it’s even rarer for him to admit the reason behind it. he was a problematic kid, too worried about having fun and finding his story, whatever that means. it brought nothing but trouble to him and everyone around it so if he’s honest, daniel feels a little guilty on the prospect of having fun as if he’s undeserving of it. he still has long ways to go when it comes to making peace with his past and the person that he used to be. it’s not unlikely of him to bury himself in work or other responsibilities to run away from anything that resembles self care.  and he knows- knows that it’s not a healthy way to go about his life, but he feels he took too much already and it’s time to give. for the past almost-eleven years. it feels weird to have eddy tell him that he deserves then and he deflects it, with a half-hearted laugh and a scratch to the back of his neck. “yeah, i guess-” he says. “though, really, i’m in. i haven’t been out in a very long time except for a few dates so i’m rusty,”

while they talked, eddy had moved over to the stove, stirring and adding in more ingredients to the dinner he was cooking up, most of his concentration still focused on dan, though. his mind was already running wild with ideas as to what they could do if dan was able to get the time off. his usual go-to of going out to a bar and drinking until all of their problems disappeared was already off the table, so eddy knew he had to get a little bit more creative when it came to treating dan to a little fun. “we’ll do something fun, i promise,” he said then, shooting dan a wicked grin, only to have it widen when dan mentioned having been on a couple of dates. “have you ever tried, like, online dating?”

— “Oh, I know that look,” Ira observed, arching an eyebrow as he looks at Eddy. When the waitress comes over to check on them, he kindly asked for two glasses of water, then thanked her. “Well, I have this long-standing date with the stars,” he joked, answering Eddy’s question, “Might have to cancel now, though.” Laughing softly, he perched his chin on his knuckles, pointing his index finger at his friend. “Kidding me? You do—you do…?! Yes, let’s do this.”  

“van damme is your date tonight, my friend,” eddy said with a grin, sipping on his water. he was glad he’d been rostered a day off now — he hadn’t realised just how badly he’d needed a break until he was presented with the chance to do absolutely nothing but watch old action movies with a friend. “i’m ready when you are.”

Solomon howled with glee as Eddy hit the floor. He threw his arms into the air and hollered through his victory lap (or three), dragging Sofia into his ruckus. “We won, Fi Fi, we won!” he chanted as they raced around the furniture. After just a small lap, though, he felt the ache settle into his stomach, and he sank into the couch, a hand over his middle. “I always wanted to have superpowers. Maybe this is mine.” Lemon.

eddy groaned loudly as solomon drew sofia into his celebration, unsure of how he’d gone so wrong that his very own daughter would delight in his suffering. he tried to relax into the floor more, his stomach a riot of nausea, bitterness and the feeling of defeat. “that’s a shitty superpower, kid,” he said, throwing an arm over his face to shield his eyes from the lights above.
