Eighty years ago, Pablo Picasso received a commission that would forever change his career.
This article tells the story of the commission, development, and impact of the painting Guernica, by Picasso.Â
While many of the details of the story may be too explicit for some children, I think it is possible to share parts with children, and have them explore this very moving painting for themselves.Â
Ben Williamson observes how ClassDojo, like other platforms, is increasingly acting as an intermediary to connect people, services and content in schools.
“ClassDojo, like other platforms, is now increasingly acting as an intermediary to connect people, services and content. However, it is an intermediary within a significant public institution, acting as a go-between that criss-crosses the purposes and interests of public education and venture capital. It is a for-profit private platform inserting itself into classrooms, school systems and family homes, and reshaping public education to fit the business plan of platform capitalism.”
I have a dream that this nation will achieve its full creative and economic potential and that Arts education will rightfully be seen as central to making this happen.
It worries me that this article frames the arts solely in an economic rationalist way. Innovation in service to the economy, to me at least, is not the purpose of education.Â
Also, I’m still sceptical about the notion of STEM, let alone STEAM. I still haven’t found a convincing conceptual description, or rationale, for using either of the acronyms, except that it might attract funding for research/community activities.
Nevertheless this article offers these and other ideas worth discussing further.
