racism is still racism when it's your faves, it's still racism if it's not meant maliciously, it's still racism if they didn't know.

The highlight of the week was watching ascendancy of a bookworm and getting to watch a spoiled rich brat be forced to listen to random peasant children ask so loudly he could hear âwhy canât he just sit there and shut up, itâs not hardâ.
Love how Ascendence of a Bookworm (spoilers for part 5) starts with, "Oh this is a fun story about the history of papermaking and the technology behind book production, as well as printing's impact on societies it's introduced in," before eventually going on a long spiral of, "If everyone does not have equal opportunities to move through the world, everyone will suffer. If we do not allow everyone access to education, everyone will suffer. If people do not have the resources they need due to social class, everyone will suffer. Yes that suffering will not be equal, but it will affect everything and everyone." And then it went on to say, "This world used to be a golden-age of meritocracy that later became an absolute monarchy due to selfish love and it nearly destroyed the entire world and everyone in it." Then followed it up with, "Everyone has some capacity to lead the country, but the person chosen who was able to shoulder that was someone who didn't have to fight in the first place because she was in an extremely privileged position that allowed her access to everything that was denied to almost everyone else. Those resources decided everything literally before she was even born. But what makes her the ONLY viable candidate in the end is that she acknowledges that she is lacking in regards to specific merits and aims to work to be a true leader deserving of the position while opening up said position to anyone with merit moving forward, kicking off another age of meritocracy."
I also love the massive overarcing theme that if you don't actively make an effort to communicate with, respect, and support the people you have power over, you will fail.
People keep joking that Myne brings capitalism to Yurgenschmidt, but honestly she brings way more socialism than capitalism.
It's so refreshing that Myne is disabled. And stays disabled. And it gets in the way of things she wants and forces her to just deal with the fact that despite the reality that nobody can see it until it's too much, she is disabled. It's never not an issue, and it's always something she has to worry about. Or have others worry about, because pushing yourself too much because you want something and ending up suffering the consequences is pretty normal when you're disabled.
Saw someone in the tags wanted this. đ Thought I could provide!
Love how I will just genuinely call Ferdinand a bitch with zero follow up and people get it. There's no "but" involved. This man needs no defense. He's a bitch. He's a loser. He's giving himself hypertension. He cares too much and somehow also gives zero fucks. He wants nothing to do with his own life. He will let the whole world literally crumble to sand if it means he doesn't have to be the main character for five seconds. He's made having an eating disorder into an art and then mastered it; something no one should ever master literally ever. He drugs small children. He drugs adults, too, but it's more important that he drugged a small child and we watch it happen and he faces Zero consequences. He poisons people for fun and profit. He would and has happily killed several members of his own family. He has mommy issues he doesn't plan to resolve. He has daddy issues he also doesn't plan to resolve. He straight up murders servants who disobey him.
There's nothing I could defend. Literally nothing. He's a million bad habits in a trench coat, with a million bad deeds filling out the boots.
He's my absolute favorite, 10/10, no notes.
Some great additions from the comments.
I love when someone is explaining instructions to a group Iâm in and they look at me and it reminds them to say something about using preferred names/pronouns or that thereâs vegan food options available. I go by my given name/pronouns and Iâm not vegan but Iâm proud that I can provide this service
Itâs a Tree. There was a tree there. Folks cut down a tree, they usually donât pull the roots, itâs like a Whalefall for fungus and burrowing invertebrates. They feast for decades.
Itâs tree roots. I know thatâs not cool and adventurous but I promise you itâs tree roots.
No, that's where they dumped the body of my good friend, Mr. Five by Five. We called him that because he was five feet tall and five feet wide. Perfectly spherical.
Strong "smooth shark" vibes with this one
Some time ago (I think in 2021) I had to go see a neurologist over really scary symptoms that resembled seizures. I was a nervous wreck about what I was feeling and had barely slept all week, which seemed to be apparent to the docâs assistant when I sat down in the exam room for questioning or whatever. Dude was pretty young and soft spoken, around my age. He was laser focused doing something on one of those tablet-laptop Surface things as I spoke, presumably writing down my symptoms.
Midway through talking about my symptoms my voice audibly started shaking as I was describing them, clearly upset.
In the middle of my monologue he turns the tablet to face me, closes whatever program he has open and the wallpaper is this fucking collage of pictures of lord farquaad from shrek, lovingly decorated. Dude just sat there placidly smiling at me until I noticed and stopped dead in the middle of a sentence. We sat there in silence like this for like a solid minute before I started wheezing laughing. Before I could even say anything else or process it he picked up the tablet and wordlessly left the room, and I just sat there dumbfounded until the doctor showed up. 10/10 doctor experience tbh
I didnât own a cell phone at the time to get a photo so this rendition from memory is all I can provide you
ID: a digital drawing of a man in scrubs sitting on a wheeled stool, serenely smiling with his elbow on a rolling cart, where a tablet is flipped open to show an approximation of the Lord Farquaad screensaver. end ID

SINNERS (2025) dir. Ryan Coogler
Viking dresses by Savelyeva Ekaterina
Another visual demonstration that historical clothing wasnât dingy and monochrome.
All of these colours can be obtained from vegetable dyes, producing different shades depending on what mordant (colour fixative - alum, different metal filings, different vinegars) was used. See here and here for examples.
BRING THIS FASHION BACK.
Not clothes, but this was a palette developed by the National Museum of Denmark based on paint residue from archaeological finds for the purpose of painting a reconstructed hall.
Apparently, they can tell from the chemical composition that the colours wouldnât be mixed with black or white to mute them, but be used in their brightest form. Bright yellow and red was achieved with expensive dyes (orpiment and cinnabar) and was thus fashionable. (Source in Danish)

Forever reminder that the ancient world was colorful everywhere, and every attempt to brownwash it in modern fiction is sheer laziness.
Anniversary of APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING
On July 20, 1969, 109 hours and 42 minutes after launch, Neil Armstrong and Edwin âBuzzâ Aldrin entered the lunar lander âEagleâ, made a final check, and the Eagle undocked from the lunar orbiter âColumbiaâ, where the third member of the crew Michael Collins, stayed in orbit around the moon. Partially manually piloted by Armstrong, the Eagle landed 0 degrees, 41 minutes, 15 seconds north moon latitude and 23 degrees, 26 minutes east moon longitude. Armstrong stepped out, and Aldrin followed 20 minutes later: human beings stepped on the moon for the first time. The two men spent 21 hours and 26 minutes on its surface. One of the astounding aspects of the mission was the seeming simplicity of the technology used to get man to the moon. According to Oliver Gassmann, professor of Technology Management, the mobile phone in your pocket has one million times more memory than the Apollo 11âs computer. Same about the procesor: the latest phones typically have more than 100,000 times the processing power of the computer that landed man on the moon 50 years ago.
âIt suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didnât feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.â âNeil Armstrong

Good news: if youâre currently laying around and not producing anything, you are a credit to your species.
Itâs recently been found that even hive insects rest. Bees will play with colorful toys. Ants sleep for about 1 minute but they do it so frequently it amounts to a few hours per day. Even trees take breaks.
The only things that work without rest are machines; literally everything that lives requires rest.
EVERYTHING THAT LIVES REQUIRES REST. STOP JUDGING YOURSELF FOR NOT BEING A ROBOT.
robots require very frequent breaks! welding machines generally have it programmed in that they canât run so long they melt themselves. ive overseen two different manufacturing robots now and each of them were fragile, finicky idiots that require constant maintenance and repair. they pause in between moves, in between jobs. youâre always keeping an eye on programming errors, on coolant levels, on heat. youâre always pulling bits of scrap out of joints, sweeping up debris, washing off nozzles and untangling hoses. and even then it snaps a chain and takes a whole morningâs vacation.
even robots need downtime.
