My best friend when hand sewing: Thread Heaven aka WAX! It keeps the thread from tangling and knotting prematurely. Between school and working on some freelance assignments my life has been 24/7 patternmaking and sewing. Can't wait to share with you guys what I've been doing in the upcoming months 😁✨✌️

I never did a cosplay vs character comparison for Sakizou Chocolate, so here it is! It's hard to believe Katsucon was over four months ago now. Where has the time gone? 22- hour weekend project from concept to finish: Creative coat with shawl collar, dimensional elements, pleats and/or ruffles. 30 pattern pieces minimum. Mine has 40. I wanted to make something really bold and went a little crazy creating this graphic design utilizing contrasting fabrics. The front sleeve and bodice had raised three dimensional shapes 😁 I'm now quite good at sewing designs with points! ✌️also, I'm somewhat obsessed with the sack back and really hope that becomes a thing again. (^_−)−☆

Do you love hemming? Do you especially love hemming circle skirts and other things cut on the bias? 😂 Turning up the edge on a circle skirt can be particularly fiddly at times, so here's a trick called the "invisible ease stitch" that makes turning the hem a bit easier. 1) remove the thread from the needle 2) Place your finger just behind the presser foot. 3) With your finger behind the presser foot, "sew" along the hem line you'll be turning. The fabric will gather between the foot and your finger creasing it. Sew for a few inches depending on your fabric weight, release, then gather the next portion. Your fabric should be creased like so. This makes it easier to turn when ironing 4) Iron your hem 5) Sew! 6) Admire your pretty, painlessly achieved hem on the bias! Note: you would want to turn up your hem twice to avoid fraying if you haven't serged it first. I only turned it once for the purpose of demonstrating this ease technique. #cosplay #sewing

Because I really like the fabric I designed here are more pictures! I had to use non traditional materials to create a unique design, so naturally I chose beads and sequins as well as some fun clear neon vinyl yardage and tubing. The weave is a 2/2 twill made on a point draw. Warp threads are pink with orange, black, and gold tie-ins leftover from a plaid I created. I randomly strung the beads, sequins, and cut up plastic tubing on a thin yarn which became part of the weft and spaced them randomly. Maybe you can see the connection between my design and the funfetti cake inspiration?? 🎂🎂🎂 #EffyWeaves

I love it when cosplay photographers take the time to capture detail shots of intricate cosplay. Little things, while they add to the overall look and impressiveness of a garment, often get lost in full body shots. Here’s a nice one of my shoes and stockings taken by Cozpho Photography at Katsucon this year. I love love love those beads on my stockings. They look just like konpeito, or Japanese star candies!

Someone on Instagram asked me about french seams, so I've made this little tutorial for you guys! French seams are a wonderful finish for sheer fabrics like chiffon and organza, or on areas of a costume that will be visible. I've used French seams on capes, tulle skirts, and organza sleeve insets. They are super easy, but do take twice the amount of time as a normal seam. First, pin your seam allowances wrong sides together. This will seem counterintuitive, but trust me! Next, stitch at half the width (or less/more depending on how wide you want the finished seam to be) of your finished seam allowance. Here I am stitching at 1/4" because my finished seam allowance is 1/2". Trim the excess down to 1/8". You can grade the seams if you are working with thicker fabrics. Turn the fabric right sides together and press with an iron. Stitch again with the remaining width of your ideal seam allowance (for me this is 1/4" again because my finished SA should be 1/2". 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2). Press to one side. Tada! Your seam allowance excess is nicely encased within itself and there will be no raveling or ugly seam allowances!
