I’m so sick of watching everyone bash Dear Evan Hansen bc they have convinced themselves it’s bad so they do everything in their power to not think about it deeper than surface level. “It says no one deserves to disappear while actively erasing Connor” YES DID YOU EVER CONSIDER THAT WAS MAYBE THE POINT. Bc when they sing that, Evan is actively lying about being friends with Connor and fabricating a completely false narrative about him bc he didn’t actually know him. In reality, Connor was extremely depressed, mean, and a drug addict. That was all Evan knew him as, so in order to keep up the facade he had to craft an entirely new, likable person. Evan is not a good person nor a bad person. At his core, he’s human and he does bad shit that he doesn’t just get away with. His erasure of Connor has entirely changed Connor’s legacy and the way he will be remembered, which is not a good thing bc it is nothing like how he actually was in life. If you want an accurate representation of the message of the show, stop cherry picking songs like “Disappear” without analyzing the full context and listen to songs like “Requiem” or “Good For You”. I think everyone misconstrues the message of deh bc they are looking at it from the lens of a happy ending, a full conflict resolution, when really it’s more of a bleak ending bc the damage done to Connor and the lies told can never be reversed now that they’ve been told on such a large scale. That’s life. Not everything can be fixed.
