The Phase Change Theory: Why Gaster is both "Gas" and "Liquid"
I’ve always wondered about the name Gaster. If you look closely at the prefix, you get 'Gas'. This is no accident. In Undertale, after his experiment went wrong and he was shattered across time and space, he literally became a gas an omnipresent substance. He exists as an atmospheric entity, a lingering frequency. Like the air we breathe, we know he is there, but we cannot see or touch him. He lacks a traditional monster soul because he has transcended into a state of matter: Gas.
However, in Deltarune, the rules are flipped. It is a world where the inanimate comes to life a mirror dimension to Undertale. In this realm, the rules of physics shift. The 'Gas' (Gaster) undergoes a phase change. He cools down and condenses. He is no longer a vapor; he is now a Liquid.
This explains the Dark Fountains. Gaster has condensed into the very substance that gives life to the Dark World. He is the fluid, the ink, the fountain itself. He is the origin of everything in that realm.
His obsession with 'The Vessel' at the beginning of the game is his attempt to find a container for his fluid state. He recognizes that the human body is a resilient vessel, capable of enduring the pressure of Determination. Since his own creation was imperfect, he now watches Kris with the cold, calculating eyes of a scientist, observing how a human soul interacts with the world he has 'saturated' with his presence.
Keep an ear out. That sound you hear in the darkness? Not footsteps, but a rhythmic dripping...
