without putting too fine a point on it, i think that being obscenely rich does something to like...your brain's capability of assessing risk. cuz for your whole life, the only risk has ever been "how much money will i lose out on" and if you're obscenely rich, it doesn't even matter how much money that would be. even if there's a risk of bodily harm, you can still pay your way through multiple surgeries to not only resume your quality of life but extend it several times over a la david rockefeller.
you never really think about "risk of death" when you can pay to reserve a whole hospital to cater exclusively to you and shut out the poor. so now to read about this submersible full of billionaires, not only signed a death waiver, but were fully okay with getting on this tight space with no GPS capabilities, piloted by a fucking video game controller of all things, to go deeper into the ocean than normal ppl would ever really dare to go, just to view a sunken ship through a tiny window like...to them, being this wealthy is a borderline superpower. they think "well nothing can ever happen to me, The Top 0.00001 Percent of the World". its main character syndrome on cocaine.
and like, they essentially paid to die. it was 250k to get in on that experience, which is a paltry sum to the likes of those ppl. i could not imagine having 250k to my name much less blowing it on a 8 day voyage to view the wreckage of another rich person's demise over 100 years ago...
but these rich ppl, are like "sure, thats nothing".
the fact that the submersible was named The Titan is...i mean, the word irony isn't strong enough for that kind of description.
